Deborah...

Deborah Cox's Website mentions Deborah's impromptu "Heartbreak Hotel" performance.

It's actually quite a clever website as - obviously - Ms Cox is not a Webmaster but it's authored as though she was writing the site.

MTV UK Interview...

Whitney's interview for MTV UK was filmed on 17 February at the HMV Records store in Oxford Street, London just before she started the signing.

In the interview, Whitney talked about Rodney Jerkins and how he had been approaching Clive Davis with songs for Whitney since the age of 16. She also talked about the recording of the song "My Love Is Your Love" and Bobbi's part in the song (much the same as in previous interviews).

The interview basically covered old ground (although new to UK audiences).

Whitney did confirm that she would tour this year and that UK dates were a given.

It's Not Right But It's Okay: The Video...

The video for "It's Not Right But It's Okay" sees Whitney in the black leather dress she wore for the Brits. The back drop is all black and Whitney spends most of her time around a glass table - either sat behind it or stood in front. There is an all female presence as young woman from all backgrounds recite the chorus - they are not dancing, just standing. Also included are short segments which include around 5 or 6 female dancers in military styled uniforms.

Oscar Performance Controversy...
[LA Times Article]

Houston and Carey have been asked to perform the song at the telecast on march 21, but academy officials say they won't be singing their hit pop single. Instead, they will be asked to perform a new arrangement of the michelle pfeiffer-sally dworsky song.

"The songs are almost always rearranged for the oscar show anyway," said Bruce Davis, the Academy executive director. But tuesday, a publicist for Carey said the two singers expected to perform the Schwartz-Babyface rendition and only that rendition.

Edmonds said that he didn't want to speak out about the controversy until friends expressed outrage that the academy would have Houston and Carey perform his version of the song at the oscars, even though he was not eligible.

"I wouldn't want to take that chance away from them", he said, "but I don't think it's right for them to do my version of the song because I am not eligible."

When informed that the academy would have them perform another version, edmonds replied: "If they are asked to perform a different kind of version, I don't know if they would want to do that. I don't know if Clive Davis would be interested in that. we do so much to get them to sing that version that to change it now wouldn't be easy.

Edmond's attorney, peter lopez of century city, said that edmonds is contractually credited with writing 15% of the Houston-Carey version. "he was clearly the catalyst for the two singers to come together because of his unique relationship with both of them." Lopez said. "...to have the academy's rules dictate that that song cannot be considered for academy consideration is unfathomable."

Arista's Pre Grammy Party...
[From Dotmusic]

Los Angeles: Whitney Houston headed an eight-strong line-up of R&B divas at a glamorous curtainraiser to tonight's American Grammy Awards.

Whitney, who last week appeared at the Brit Awards in London, was the star turn at an eve-of-Grammys party thrown by her record company Arista. The highlight of the evening came when she reprised her hit Heartbreak Hotel with Kelly Price and Faith Evans, and they were then joined by audience members Cissy Houston (Whitney's mum), Monica, Mary J Blige, Deborah Cox and new Arista Records signing Shanice.

"It was incredible," says Music Week editor-in-chief Steve Redmond. "Eight of the greatest R&B singers in the world singing their hearts out." Sadly the performance, although recorded, is unlikely to be released.

Whitney's show-stopping performance followed an all-star line-up of Arista artists, which included Grammy nominees Sarah McLachlan and Monica, Deborah Cox and Naughty By Nature. They appeared before an even more star-studded audience, including comedian Jerry Seinfeld, sports star Magic Johnson, actor Wesley Snipes, Puff Daddy, Tony Bennett and the Backstreet Boys. The Grammys begin at 4pm local time (Midnight in London) at the Shrine Auditorium in LA.

Puffy's Grammy Bash...
[From USA Today]

PARTY NIGHT: If you'd been lounging at the pool outside L.A.'s Mondrian hotel Sky Bar Monday night, about 2 a.m., you'd have heard a stellar free concert. Seems Mariah Carey turned up around then, in search of Sean "Puffy" Combs' Grammy Week dinner party at the new Asia de Cuba in Ian Schrager's Mondrian. That was over, but Carey sauntered to the Sky Bar with four gal pals and sent word to waiting limos to join them. Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston and another dozen friends also sang out, singing a cappella as the spirit moved them. Carey sang a song Wonder has written for her. [The last comment is inaccurate as Stevie Wonder hasn't written for Mariah but has for Whitney].

It's Not Right It's The Video...
[Text of message posted by Bryn on the Onelist Mailing List]

This morning I watched the music channel The Box for ages to see if the "INRBIO" was on their playlist. It wasn't but when I turned it back over to MTV, the video was playing!!!! Whitney looks GOOD! She's wearing the same dress as in the Brits and the same hair and makeup. She has got a different choker on though, this ones shaped at the front. In the video, she's upfront with loads of women behind her singing the chorus with her. Every now and again you can see flickering lights and real dancers dancing away to the tune. Whitney sometimes also sits at a table with a LOT of her leg showing! Whitney looks fantastic and really happy and fun. Well, I guess that's it for now. So, anyone who gets MTV UK or Europe, watch out for the video. It's an MTV exclusive so you won't see it anywhere else.

Whitney In France...

Whitney Houston is back in France!!!! For the first time since her tragic incident with Serge Gainsbourg who insulted her on the live French T.V. show called "Champs Elysees," she's giving an exclusive interview to Jean-Pierre Foucault for the show "Les Annees Tubes" and she will perform "Heartbreak Hotel" live. As a rule, in this T.V. show, the artist performs after his [the presenter] song on a medley with singers-dancers on some of his best hits. Madonna don't make it. But Whitney can make it . So maybe???
I have no more information about it. It will be on the next 03.05.99.(month.day.year.) on T.F.1. in France at 20.45hrs. She performs this day with a special guest "Lara Fabien" (not with) who performs "I Will Always Love You" for a special "Valentine's day" T.V. show. Another Celine Dion , I think. Furthermore, M.6. (a music T.V. channel in France ), will rerun the Brits Awards '99. on Saturday 27 February 1999 at 23.30 (Paris time) (not in it's entirety, just choosing moments. But I'm sure Whitney will be on because it's mentioned

It's late - but I am back from meeting Whitney Houston for the first time - This Is My Report On This Remarkable Day.

[Special thanks to Matt & Mandy]

NEWSFILE: 17 FEBRUARY 1999

Brits Appearance...

When the Brits shows in your country - don't miss it! Whitney Houston gave a furious and slick performance of "It's Not Right But It's Okay". Dressed in a split long black leather dress, Whitney looked stunning and performed with a crew of between 20-30 dancers. She commanded her stager perfectly and occasionally, took to performing some of the dancer's moves.

The sound system could have been alot better - I don't think the Brits accounted for the power in Whitney's voice. Whitney did sound a little raspy but it was to the full credit of the performance ultimately.

I will endeavor to provide pictures from the performance and possibly a RealAudio file - but don't hold me to it - it's all time permitting and I don't have much time right now.

Brits Info V...

They aired the Brit Awards live in Portugal, on the radio. Whitney's performance was great, she sounded a little raspy, however I think it was due to a more angry performance than the one on the Italian show (the only other live performance I heard). She did sang a few high notes, and overall I think it was a better performance than the one on the CD. BTW, she was presented as an American superstar and a legend.

Brits Info II...

In an interview with Whitney Houston this evening on Capital Radio, Whitney was asked what advice she would give to up & coming artists - in particular Billie (the British equivalent of Britney Spears only not as good). Whitney said:
"I would probably say to her to really know the business, to really know the ins & outs - because it's most important to know you're business and what's happening. I would also tell her, stay in touch with herself - because if you're looking for who you are in this business you won't find it. You really have to know who you are before you get in it."
"Have a good strong foundation - a good belief and faith in God. Really, really know that that is the thing that is above all of us. Nothing is bigger or better than that."

"There are so many things that you can get into that can pick you up and put you down as a youngster - because as a youngster, we get very disappointed as young people because we don't know enough. When we get older, we build a resilience and we tend to know how to deal with it a little better. I just hope she has someone who guides her and loves her - just for her. And just calls her up sometimes and says "how you doin'?" - that mean alot.

DJ - You obviously have people like that at home?
"Absolutely - I wouldn't be in this business without that."

DJ - How many real friends do you have? I've been asking alot of people this. I'm gonna guess - one hands full?
"Yeah. Two."

You can phone them up any time of the day?
"Any time of the day - just about two or three".

DJ - And then an awful lot of people that you know.
"Yea - and more that know me that I have no idea who they are!".

Whitney acknowledged that she knew of Robbie Williams (the most nominated artist of the evening) but did seem to be unconcerned about the other names presented to her.

Whitney and Arista can be forgiven for the lack of promotion in the UK - you don't get much more high profile than this:

Tuesday 16 February - Whitney will perform at The Brits, London Arena, Docklands;
Wednesday 17 February - The Brits air;
Wednesday 17 February - Whitney Houston will sign copies of her albums at the HMV Records Store in Oxford Street London;
Friday 19 February - Whitney will appear on Top Of The Pops for only the second time in her career - the first was 1987's performance for "I Wann Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)".

I just want to let everybody know, that the video of It's Not Right But It's Okay is ready to be released. I saw on MTV Europe, in the news Whitney recording the video. They said it's going to be very sexy and they're right you know. Whitney was in a very sexy leather dress, with brown hair, looking quite mad. She also said that, when she finished the video, she comes to Europe, and as we know, she is already here (I was there when she performed in the Surpriseshow in Holland). So that means that the video is ready, and soon we will see it on MTV. The video is quite different what most people expect from her (she's like Madonna in the video of Human Nature). I think it's going to blow up the album!!!!

Whitney Houston will be performing at The Brits on Tuesday 16 February.

The organisers of the Brit Awards were so keen for Whitney Houston to appear at this years event at London's Docklands Arena that they have invited her to perform her new single and she isn't even up for an award.

Performers at the Brit Awards are usually Award winners or one off musical collaborations (remember Robbie Williams and Tom Jones' fantastic Full Monty number last year?). Whitney has made such an impact with her stunning new album "My Love Is Your Love" she won a prime spot on the show.

Hopefully she will be back next year to pick up her award for Best International Female......

Civil War Movie...
From: Sister 2 Sister; March 1999

Whitney Houston produces a film - Whitney Houston is working on another movie, but she won't be starring in it. This time around she's producing it through her film company, BrownHouse Productions. It's about the Civil War and it's based on a true story about a slave girl and a White man. The word is that Whitney's company will be working with producer Lawrence Bender. He produced the movie Pulp Fiction. Yum!

I love that Whitney Houston song "Heartbreak Hotel." That's the one with Faith Evans and Kelly Price. Whitney said she had so much fun doing that song. She said, "These artists can sing." She also said, "As for the title, I've stayed in that place before, but I checked out." I think a lot of women have visited Heartbreak Hotel a time or two!

Arista Responds...

Dear Arista, I am a loyal fan of Whitney Houston. I absolutely love her new cd and single. My only request is that Arista continue to support and promote this great cd. I love the HH video and the new remixes, however, I think that Whitney's audience would vastly increase if an urban remix is added to HH ala Puffy or Jay-z. Also, if Arista, intends to release 'My Love is Your Love' as a single, we the fans implore you to let Wyclef remix this song and add a killer remix. Please continue the promotion of this cd and continue with great videos like Heartbreak Hotel. I would like to see at least a couple #1s of this cd.Again, we are asking for urban remixes/rap to be attached to the songs Heartbreak Hotel and My Love to Your Love and to not just service the club/house market.
Thanks for reading my e-mail. Lopez.

[This Is Arista's response]

Arista is standing behind this release all the way. We would also like to see some # 1s. There is a great contest on the site now. We will also be releasing many more singles from the album. Thank you for your support.

Lauryn...

Lauryn Hill has been in London this past week for her one and only live show in Europe. Whilst here, Lauryn also appeared on Top Of The Pop. I have a friend who went to the gig as well as the Top Of The Pops recording. Apparently, Lauryn performed three songs whilst at the TOTP studio. How many of the songs performed actually aired?? (I didn't see the show).

Anyway, my friend says there was a real buzz about the impending Whitney Houston performance on the show in two weeks time. It's likely that Whitney may record more than one song - perhaps a TOTP exclusive with two or more performances is possible but also possible/likely is Whitney recording for a later single release.

First UK Review: It's More Than Okay! ...
[This is the first UK review of "It's Not Right But It's Okay" from the Capital Radio Website]

On the day that Whitney Houston is confirmed as a the very special guest for the 1999 BRIT Awards, the queen of R&B is looking and sounding even better than ever.

Her new single 'It's Not Right But It's OK' is a massive shift away from her previous soulful ballads and is representative of the diverse array of producers and collaborators that have helped her on the 'My Love Is Your Love' album.

Calling on the co-operation of Missy Elliott, Babyface and other well-known and young talents, Whitney has created - for her first studio album in years (most of her other contributions have been for soundtracks or duets with various partners) a cutting-edge sound which traverses all styles from dance, R&B and soul.

She's been away for too long. The success of her duet with Mariah Carey just before Christmas proved that she is still well loved and there'd be no surprise to see 'It's Not Right But It's OK' hitting the top of the charts soon after it's release date.

Famously Difficult Interviewee...

It's always interesting to see how Whitney Houston interacts with the British media. In tonight's O-Zone interview - her first since her 1997 O-Zone interview - Whitney had a glut of the usual questions(Did you know how big the Bodyguard was going to be? How did that duet come about? What makes a diva?) , but what made the interview different was her candid responses. In interview and in press in the UK, Whitney reacts very differently than she does to the US media. Perhaps more serious, but definitely more intelligent.

Highlights:

The "Diva"'s Whitney acknowledged were Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick and Diana Ross;
Rodney Jerkins is a classically trained pianist (!);
Whitney does movies "because I can". She does not actively go out seeking roles and she states that movies will never come before music.
She re-emphasized her shock and surprise at just how big "The Bodyguard" was;
"It's Not Right But It's Okay" was acknowledged as "the next single" but the clip shown was from the EPK;
"I Belong To You" was Whitney's last UK single not to be generated from a Soundtrack. A short segment of the video for this song was played.

The introduction to the interview described Whitney as a "famously difficult interviewee" and perhaps that title was coined after the fact. Whitney was quite different, almost intimidating. The camera shots were taken from varying angles and one was to the right of Whitney which decided to focus very closely in on Whitney's skin - almost a "see, she doesn't have the most perfect skin" type shot. Very curious.

Time permitting, a full transcript will appear on this website shortly.

Fred's Chartbeat Chat Quotes Manish...

A statement I made on the Bulletin Board on 18 January 1999 regarding Mariah Carey's consecutive No.1 singles has been posed to Fred Bronson on his Chartbreat Chat Column at the Billboard Website.

The complete text of the question can be found here. Basically, I stated that according to Billboard's 100th Anniversary issue, when they quoted artists with the most consecutive No.1 singles, stated that consecutive No.1 singles are un-effected if a duet falls short of the No.1 spot, but if that duet goes to No.1, it would add to the streak.

The only mistake made is in quoting the source. It wasn't Billboard's 100th Anniversary Issue - It was Billboard issue dated 19 September 1998 which marked the 40th Anniversary of the Hot100.

On Page 38 of this issue, it clearly states "**The Consecutive category excludes Christmas hits, reissues, B-sides, EPs and duos (unless they add to the streak).**"

The question to Fred is posed by Andre as follows:

Hello Fred, My question is regarding Mariah & Whitney's duet "When You Believe." There's been some digging into the Billboard rules, and someone posted the following statement on the Mariah Carey newsgroup, a statement found on a Whitney Houston Web site:

"... If 'When You Believe' goes to No. 1 (not likely now), it would become Mariah's sixth consecutive No. 1 single. If it doesn't, Billboard's 100th Anniversary edition clearly states that duets can add to a string of consecutive No. 1s but cannot break the chain. Thus, if 'I Still Believe' (Mariah's new single) gets to No 1. and 'WYB' doesn't, Mariah will have attained her sixth consecutive No. 1."

Clearly this is a rule that Billboard MUST address, as it doesn't make sense to say that "WYB" isn't a Mariah song if it doesn't go to No. 1, but is a Mariah song if it does. What's Billboard position on this subject, and what are your thoughts? If the rule stands, I sure think it should be revised. If Mariah is credited as one of the performers for "When You Believe," why wouldn't it account for a song of hers that didn't reach No. 1?

I'm sure looking forward to some clarification. And once again, thanks for a great column.
Andre andre@cwix.com

This is Fred's Reply:

Dear Andre, You're right, it makes no sense. I don't know anything about the policy you quote from the 100th anniversary issue. "When You Believe" is clearly credited to Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, and they both get the credit (or lack thereof).

I should emphasize that Billboard doesn't make "official" policy statements like the one you mention. While there are rules about how charts are compiled, no one takes a stand about consecutive streaks. I write about such events in Chart Beat and use my own good sense about who should get credit for what.

You Can Read The Same Article On The Billboard Site - Click Here.

I will, of course, e-mail Fred to point him in the direction of the issue which made the statement.

Wes Asks Fred...

Whitney Houston Webmaster, Wes Horton has a question which was featured on Billboard's Chrtbeat Chat Column.

Hey Fred, Like many others, I am very surprised and disappointed by the lack of chart success for Whitney Houston's latest CD, "My Love Is Your Love." Is it going to go back up the chart? Whitney has never had an album or soundtrack not make it into the top three!! Could this be the one to break the Houston tradition? I have a Web site dedicated to Whitney entitled "Whitney Houston -- The All Round Entertainer" (http://www.beyond.net.au/whweb) Should I give up on the biggest-selling female artist in history? Thanks, Wes Horton

Dear Wes, I think it's too early to give up on Houston, and her latest album. It's true that it hasn't performed to expectations yet -- in fact, so far its peak position on The Billboard 200 is No. 13, its debut position (this week it moves 26-23). A smash hit single could lift the album back up, but so could television appearances. Perhaps her spot on "The American Music Awards" on Jan. 11 will have an affect on album sales -- appearances on the Billboard Awards, the AMAs, and the Grammys tend to do that. Fred Bronson

Heartbreak...
[Here's a small article from the New York Post regarding the video shoot for "Heartbreak Hotel." ]

Big Chill

You can't count on the weather, as Whitney Houston learned on the Florida shoot for her new "Heartbreak Hotel" video. "Are you sure this is Miami?" she laughed as temperatures plummeted at Opa Locka Airport, where a section of the airstrip was cordoned off for the hush-hush shoot with fellow singers Kelly Price and Faith Evans. Producers picked the Sunshine State for its warm weather, The Post's Malcolm Balfour reports. "Who'd have guessed the temperature would drop into the 40s - we could have shot this in New Jersey," griped one grip. Whitney's lips trembled with cold during the filming. One scene called for her white Rolls convertible to approach a jet through a cloud of mist. But 40-mile-an-hour winds blew the fake smoke away the second it came out of the smoke-maker.

The O-Zone...

There was a short segment tonight about Whitney Houston on the O-Zone in the UK tonight. The excerpt was an interview with Whitney (I forget the interviewer's name but he's a fairly prominent, intelligent Indian presenter so the full interview should prove to be interesting). Tonight, Whitney talked about how tired she got of working on "The Bodyguard" - doing the soundtrack then the movie then the soundtrack then the movie....

Whitney says the only reason she stuck it out was the support of Bobby.

The complete interview will air in two weeks time and it is expected to feature the video to "It's Not Right But It's Okay".

Billboard's Heartbreak Hotel...
This is Billboard Magazine's review of "Heartbreak Hotel":

WHITNEY HOUSTON (feat. FAITH EVANS AND KELLY PRICE)
``Heartbreak Hotel'' (3:59) Arista

After the embarrassing radio performance of the heavily hyped Mariah Carey duet ``When You Believe'' from ``The Prince Of Egypt,'' Arista is calling upon hot R&B singers Kelly Price and Faith Evans to lend a little street cred to Houston's second single from ``My Love Is Your Love.'' On this track, launched last month at the Billboard Music Awards with a smoking live performance, Houston eases into the role of the dissed lover who's taking things into her own hands with a letter telling her man how much he hurt her with his cheating. It's a highly effective setting for Houston, who wears her emotions on her sleeve and serves up one of the most effective performances on the album. Price and Evans sell themselves grandly as empathetic sisters alongside their pained friend, soaring with emotion and helping keep the timeless artist identifiable to a new generation of R&B; fans. Anyone who embraced Price's ``Friend Of Mine'' won't even have to play this one all the way through to love it. It's nice to see Houston on track, leaning away from the syrup and juicing up for the real deal here.
