The Greatest Hits Of All...

Arista Records have confirmed to Billboard Magazine that Whitney Houston will release her long awaited Greatest Hits album by years end.

There is no word yet as to the format of the album or the hits that would be included but the original 1994 project was to have four new songs so it's likely this project will follow this plan in order to keep it current throughout 2000.

B-Side Relegation?...

On the latest Billboard charts - the Hot 100 - "It's Not Right But It's Okay" is listed as "B/W Heartbreak Hotel", rather than "Album Cut". What this means, is that Billboard is considering it as the current B-side to "Heartbreak Hotel". Prior to December, the two songs would have been listed together on the Hot 100, since both appear on the airplay chart (i.e. like an old double A side). On the Hot 100 Sales chart, the exact listing is "Heartbreak Hotel/It's Not Right But It's Okay", but this is the first week that both songs have been listed.

Unless Arista issues a commercial single, It's Not Right But It's Okay will not receive any sales points even though it is officially listed as appearing on the commercial single for Heartbreak Hotel.

On the singles front, "Heartbreak Hotel" slips one place to No.7 on the Hot100 Singles Chart. It spends it's 22nd week on the Hot100, remaining at No.5 on the Hot100 Airplay listing and slipping to No.13 on the Hot100 Sales Chart.

"Heartbreak Hotel" is down one place to No.6 on the R&B Singles Chart in it's 24th week on the chart after slipping to No.14 in the R&B Airplay listing and slipping to No.10 in the R&B Singles Sales Chart.

"Heartbreak Hotel" is far from over on the Hot100 as it bullets up to No.8 on the Top 40 Tracks listing and is bulleted up to No.10 on the Top 40 Mainstream listing. The song slips one place to No.4 on the Top 40 Rythmic Top 40 Tracks listing.

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" is taking off quicker than initially expected as it debuts on the Hot100 at No.87. The debut reflects airplay only points as a commercial single is not yet available. This week, it debuts at No.69 on the Hot100 Airplay Chart.

On the R&B Singles Chart, "It's Not Right But It's Okay" is also making quick inroads as it climbs to No.41 after a jump in the R&B Airplay listing from No.54 to No.30.

New UK Single...

Whitney Houston: "Love" set to stun the UK charts.

May will see the return of Whitney Houston to the UK singles chart. Currently sitting pretty at number two in the States[written at time of Heartbreak Hotel's stint at No.2 on the Hot100], "My Love Is Your Love" sees the legendary singer looking to build on her recent success.

Following on from the phenomenal success of "It's Not Right", Whitney Houston brings her own unique brand of brilliance back, to try and top the success of her biggest single since the Bodyguard. Tentatively scheduled for a release date of Monday May 17, its clear she cannot wait for more success.

With the astounding American sales ensuring that interest in the next release is running high, Whitney has plumped for the title track of the album, "My Love is Your Love". Written with the aid of Wyclef Jean, the cut is sure to see Whitney back at the top of the charts, and all over radio and TV once again.

The curreent US single is It's Not Right But It's Okay and the single being played in Europe is Heartbreak Hotel. The single was sent to radio just as a way to encourage radio to play the album. We have a few more singles for the summer. I hope this answers some of your questions.

Although not confirmed, does this read like the next European single is "Heartbreak Hotel"? It's good to know there will also be some more singles - Manish.

Honouring Whitney...

Deirdre O'Brien Child Advocacy Center Names Whitney Houston Child Advocate of the Year'

MORRISTOWN, N.J., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The Deirdre O'Brien Child Advocacy Center will honor Whitney Houston as its first Child Advocate of the Year at the Center's annual spring fundraising event Sunday, April 18, 1999, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Birchwood Manor.

The popular singer is being honored for the support of the Whitney Houston Foundation for Children, which contributed a $40,000 grant for the construction of a medical examination room in the center. The medical room is equipped with the latest forensic medical examination equipment available to assist police and prosecutors in the investigation of cases involving allegations of child sexual abuse.

"We are grateful for the generous support of Whitney Houston and her foundation for children, and wanted to honor her on behalf of her work with children. The Whitney Houston Foundation grant allowed us to complete this last, critical component at the Center," said Karen D. Carbonello, Director of the Deirdre O'Brien Child Advocacy Center. "The medical room combines the functionality of a hospital or doctor's office examination room with the child-friendly atmosphere that has been so successful throughout the Center." The room features a sailing and beach theme.

This year's fundraiser, using the theme "Reaching New Heights," is again being held in conjunction with Victims' Rights Week. The Center also notes that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The event is designed to be more family-oriented and will feature a family brunch, games, storytelling and other activities for children, Gymbo the Clown from Gymboree, and a brief program.

Georgia O'Brien, President of the Board of Trustees of the Center, said, "We have enjoyed so many successes recently at the Center, that we decided on a dynamic theme for the event, 'Reaching New Heights.' We had several suggestions about our spring fundraising events that inspired us to focus more on the children and families in our community. The response has been very gratifying, and we thank those who will be joining us on Sunday."

Tickets for the fundraiser will be available at the door on Sunday. The price is $50 per person. Children age 10 and under will be admitted free.

The Deirdre O'Brien Child Advocacy Center, 8 Court St., Morristown, NJ, is a child-friendly place where victims of child sexual abuse can begin to heal. In addition to housing facilities where investigators can conduct interviews of child victims and their families, the Center also offers programs in therapy, child abuse prevention, advocacy and public education. The Center opened in 1996.

And We Danced...
[Review - possibly historic but still worth a read - of Heartbreak Hotel / It's Not Right But It's Okay from And We Danced... the 'Zine]

Whitney Houston -Heartbreak Hotel/It's Not Right But It's Okay (Arista)- Dance Single .

Note to Whitney: Leave those overproduced ballads and award show production numbers to Celine. We need you in the club! Whitney proved she could light a dance fire clear back on 1987's I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me). Now, following in the footsteps of Gloria Estefan, Cher, and Bette Midler, she's set out to prove she still has the pipes to compete with the best of the divas.

Whitney's right. She does have the pipes, and this single proves it. The first song Heartbreak Hotel finds Whitney trying out the Aaliyah-style hip hop groove on the album version. Frankly, it's not a very comfortable fit, but when you hear Hex Hector relax the backing and stretch things out on the radio and club mixes, that voice rings thorough loud and clear.

The other song It's Not Right But It's Okay is currently topping the US dance chart and deservedly so. R&B prodigy Rodney Jerkins has given Whitney a simple song with a clear message. Whitney boots out a straying lover with conviction and confidence. On the Thunderpuss 2000 club mix it's quite evident that Whitney's voice has more than enough depth to match up with a hard club bass. A 13-minute mammoth mix by Johnny Vicious deconstructs the song to focus intently on the key message of the lyrics-You screwed up too many times, you're moving out, and I will be fine, thank you. Anyone not believe her?

If you are a dance fan, our advice is to pick this single up right away, skip the album, and be on the lookout for additional dance singles. Now if we could just convince Whitney to give us an entire album of the hot dance music she is clearly capable of singing.

[Thanks Lopez]

INRBIO: The Billboard Review...
[This is Billboard Magazine's review of "It's Not Right But It's Okay"; confirmed as the next US single]

Houston continues to prove that she can hang with the kids on the street on the latest single from her "My Love Is Your Love" collection. Producer Rodney Jerkins places the diva at the center of a jittery funk beat that suits the tension of the lyrics. Houston plays the emancipated woman to the hilt here, snarling through the song's "I'm gonna make it anyway" message with a white-knuckled gusto that she hasn't displayed in ages. Loyalists yearning for one of the singer's patented power ballads will be disappointed at first, though they will likely find solace in Jerkins' Smooth Remix, which reinvents the tune as a languid jeep cruiser. Everyone else, however, should find this single as appealing and refreshing as it is timely and competitive.

Stephen Schwartz' Statement...
[Anderz - Mariah Carey Webmaster - recently e-mailed Stephen Schwartz about his no-show at the Oscars. Mr Schwartz (all credit to him) replied.]

This is Anderz Message To Stephen Schwartz:

It was kind of a shame when you won and wasn't there to accept the award. I wish you would have told Whitney and Mariah that they could accept the award for you instead. Like it happened now on the show it became kindof weird. I'm a big fan of both Whitney and Mariah and has been following the success of the song closely. You might be happy to know that it has already sold about 2 million singles and also it has been sold in 10 million copies on Mariah's album, 5 million on Whitney's album and a few million on the Prince of Egypt soundtrack too, not bad! In my country Sweden it's been one of the most successful songs lately, it was top 5 for almost 4 months in a row. Well, I uess you'll know all that when the money starts coming in. Thanx for writing such a nice song.

This Was Stephen Schwartz Reply:

Dear AW: I was disappointed not to be able to attend the Oscar ceremony, but as they announced on television, I was in rehearsal in New York for a show (actually two shows.) The Sunday night of the telecast, I had to be in New Haven at a performance of WORKING which was the only one Studs Terkel could attend; there is new material in the show he had not seen, and he had to okay it. He flew in from Chicago especially for the show, and his age (87, I think) made it important for me to see him while I could. The following day, Monday, there was a run-thru of Act One of HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME in New York, which was also very important for me to attend, as we were discussing what changes to make before presenting the act to the Disney executives later in the week. I would have been delighted for Whitney and Mariah to accept the award on my behalf, but the Academy no longer allows recipients to send surrogate accepters, probably because they have been used for political statements in the past. Now anytime a recipient cannot be there, the presenter simply accepts in the name of the Academy. I did send them a brief statement in case I won, saying why I couldn't be there and thanking the members of the Academy, which is what Jennifer Lopez read. It troubles me that this may have appeared rude to you. (I certainly am not the first recipient who was unable to attend the ceremony.) But fun as it would have been to be there and be on television and go to the parties, I felt that my responsibilities to my work and colleagues on WORKING and HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME outweighed that.
Thank you for your concern, and I very much appreciate your enthusiasm for the song and my work.
Sincerely, Stephen Schwartz.

Columbia Club...
[Whitney Houston By Tracy E. Hopkins frequest contributor to Billboard, Vibe and the Source]

Whitney Houston has arguably the most powerful voice in modern music. On 'My Love Is Your Love,' her first non-soundtrack release since 1990's 'I'm Your Baby Tonight,' Houston proves hands down that she is the heiress apparent to Aretha's Queen of Soul title. In contrast to her wholesome megahits I will Always Love You from 'The Bodyguard' soundtrack and 'Waiting To Exhale's Shoop Shoop anthem, on 'My Love,' Houston bears her soul on bluesy tales of infidelity like 'It's Not Right But It's Okay and Heartbreak Hotel, featuring Arista label mates Faith Evans and Kellly Price. Whitney also gets funky on several tracks including the sassy In My Business-produced by and featuring Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott-a song that seems to be directed at the inquiring minds concerned with her turbulent marital affairs.

However, fans looking for the trademark Whitney Houston ballad won't be disappointed. Since her self-titled debut album, Houston has given us good love, and on 'My Love,' the Babyface-penned Until You Come Back and Diane Warren's You'll Never Stand Alone are poised to become classics in the tradition of Saving All My Love for You and Count On Me. In additon, the disc includes When You Believe, Houston's landmark duet with Mariah Carey from the 'Prince of Egypt.'

From start to finish, the deeply personal 'My Love Is Your Love' proves that Houston has improved with age. And at just 35, one gets the impression that this diva has a lot more to give.

Note: Kelly Price is not signed to Arista.

Oscar Confirmation...
[Two Divas Believe In Babyface - From USA Today]

Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey said Tuesday they'll sing the Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds version of When You Believe at the Oscars. That's the latest twist in a controversy brewing since the original version of the song, by Stephen Schwartz, sung during The Prince of Egypt by Michelle Pfeiffer and Sally Dworsky, received an Oscar nomination. Edmonds' version, with about 15% more music, is sung by Houston and Carey over the end credits of the film and became a hit single. Schwartz did not allow Edmonds' name to be included on the Academy Awards application. Rules allow only one version of a song to be nominated. "It wasn't that I was angry; I was just hurt," Edmonds told USA TODAY Tuesday. He added: "It's my problem. I just hope that the academy will now look at changing the rules."

UK Performance Update...
[This is what UK music trade magazine Music Week had to say about Whitney's chart performance]

For the second week in a row, Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love" reaches it's highest chart position. When it was first released last November, Whitney's album made a very disappointing chart debut at number 27. A slow decline set in, but it turned around once her new single, "It's Not Right But It's Okay" started to get airplay, and, as the single debuted at number three last week, the album jumped 37-22. It explodes again this week, climbing to number 10. It has taken 16 weeks to reach this position, and sold more than 19,000 copies last week, bringing its overall tally to 130,000. There are several more potential singles on the album, of which the most commercial is the title track, a Wyclef Jean composition which evokes the spirit of Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry". There is still a long way to go, but "My Love Is Your Love" should eventually win over the doubters and give Whitney another platinum album.

Chart Update...

Whitney's "My Love Is Your Love" album slips to No.41 on the Billboard 200 this week and it's down to No.21 on the Hot R&B albums chart - the pushing coming from the surge in Grammy winner's sales and also a full squad of new releases. TLC's "Fan Mail" is the No.1 album.

"Heartbreak Hotel" remains at No.3 on the Hot100 for the third week. The single retains it's bullet. On the R&B Singles Chart, "Heartbreak Hotel" is No.1 for the fifth week. The song also rises to No.4 on the Hot Dance/Club Play singles chart. Expect it to rise to No.1 in the next couple of weeks.

New US Diamond Certification...

RIAA To Unveil New Award At Star-Studded Event

Dozens of the music industry's biggest stars will be honored March 16 in New York as the RIAA unveils its Diamond Award, a new certification level for recording artists who have achieved U.S. sales of 10 million units of a single title. Although the RIAA would not reveal how many acts will attend the event, Billboard Bulletin has confirmed that Billy Joel, Elton John, Boyz II Men, AC/DC, and Boston will be among those on hand at Roseland Ballroom to receive their Diamond Awards.

As of this month, 62 albums spanning four decades qualify for the honor, according to the RIAA. In February alone, Van Halen's "1984," Green Day's "Dookie," Journey's "Greatest Hits," No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom," and the self-titled debut album by the Backstreet Boys were certified at the 10- million level.
Until now, the RIAA had bestowed awards for gold (500,000 units), platinum (1 million), and multi-platinum sales.

Whitney Houston is the only female artist with two Diamond albums - "Whitney Houston" and "The Bodyguard". Her "Whitney" album is certified at 9 Million - expect it to become her third Diamond album shortly.

The Ultimate Diva Show...

Mr. Showbiz is reporting that David Foster is currently trying to convince Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Barbara Streisand to go on a tour with opera sensation Andrea Bocelli. The tour would be called "Three Divas and a Tenor," inspired by the wildly successful "Three Tenors" tour featuring Pavarotti, Carreras, and Domingo. Each performacne on the "Three Divas" tour would be broadcast on pay-per-view, with requisite CD, laser disc, and other marketing ventures to follow.

There are a number of potential stumbling blocks to the idea, including scheduling conflicts, individual label prerogatives for each artist, and Streisands reported insistence that she have final say over what songs are performed. Nevertheless, the potential for an astronomical pay-off could overcome these difficulties--imagine the huge audience interest in such a spectacle. It would no doubt be billed as a historic concert featuring pop music's three greatest vocalists or some other such hyperbolic tag. It would make VH1's Divas Live 1998 look like small potatoes and capitalize on the public fascination with the "DIVA" phenomenon.

It's Not Right Commentary...
[from Dotmusic]

3 IT'S NOT RIGHT BUT IT'S OK (Whitney Houston) Although her duet with Mariah Carey on When You Believe was also taken from the album, as far as most people are concerned this is the first official single release from Whitney's new studio album My Love Is Your Love which was quietly released just before Christmas and is now beginning to grow in appeal. This is the track she performed at the Brit awards a fortnight ago and a track that proves Whitney is able to perform on a modern R&B track and match the abilities of all the young pretenders that have come along whilst she has spent most of the decade making movies. It's Not Right But It's OK may be far removed from the pop brilliance of her work in the late 80s but it is still an astounding record and in crashing straight into the Top 3 becomes her biggest hit single since Run To You and I Have Nothing from the Bodyguard soundtrack both made the Top 3 in 1993. The slow-building, brooding nature of the song provokes comparisons with The Boy Is Mine, perhaps unsurprisingly both tracks were written by Rodney Jerkins who also sits in the producers chair on this recording.

UK Chart Debut...

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" has debuted at No.3 on the new UK singles chart. This is Whitney's 13th top ten hit and the highest debuting single of her career (the previous best being the No.4 debut of "When You Believe").

The song joins "I Have Nothing" as Whitney's fifth highest placed single ever - the other four were all No.1 singles.

"It's Not Right But It's Okay sold 161,500 copies last week - enough for a No.1 in most weeks - and in fact more than alot of No.1 singles sell in their chart career these days. The single by Blur sold 171,000 copies with Britney Spears selling close to 200,000 copies.

Top Of The Pops...

No real fanfair for Whitney Houston as she performed on Top Of The Pops tonight - only the second appearance on the show of her career.

Dressed in black slacks and top, Whitney performed with around eight female dancers. On her forehead, Whitney had a painted on dot - the Indian symbol which historically was only worn by married women although in recent years adopted by western cultures - most recently by Madonna.
The dance routine was much the same as the Brits from last week. Vocally, Whitney sounded great and once again took the ad libs to new territory. Expect a RealAudio File of the performance shortly.
