It's Alright, It's Gold...

The Arista Records Website confirms that "It's Not Right But It's Okay" has been certified Gold representing US shipment of 500,000 units. This is now Whitney's 19th Gold Single, the third lifted from the double platinum "My Love Is Your Love" album.

TOTP...

Whitney's live performance of "My Love Is Your Love" will feature on Top Of The Pops this Friday.

UK Sales & Chart Data...

"My Love Is Your Love" was outsold on the UK Singles Chart by a ratio of 2:1. The song sold close to 130,000 copies to debut at No.2 but ATB's "9PM (Till I Come)" sold 270,000 copies. Whitney's sales are significant and enough to register a No.1 debut in many of this year's charts. "It's Not Right But It's Okay" started it's career at No.3 and sold 160,000 copies on it's first week.

Whitney has now lifted three Top 5 singles from "My Love Is Your Love" and this is the comment which appears in Music Week this week:

After falling short of the Top 10 with seven consecutive singles, Whitney Houstonhas reached the Top 5 with each of her last three. Her renaissance is linked to her decision to take her music in an urban direction with the album My Love Is Your Love, from which all three derive. The first single, When You Believe, a duet with Mariah Carey, reached number four. The follow-up, It's Not Right But It's Okay, peaked at number three but has sold more than most number ones, it's 500,000 sales placing it ninth for the year to date. The third is the title track, which sold nearly 130,000 copies last week to debut at number two. The success of these singles has worked wonders on the My Love Is Your Love album, which started off poorly, but climbed as high as number five during It's Not Right's chart run. It climbs 9-6 this week and has sold more than 310,000 copies to date.

UK Airplay...

An excellent week for "My Love Is Your Love" on UK radio this week as it jumps from No.15 to No.8 on it's sixth chart week. The song was played 1532 times - that's an increase by 45% over last week. It's audience was 48.38 million, an increase of 38%. The song was the biggest growing song of the week adding 472 plays over last week.

At Radio One, it remained A listed and jumped 17-8 with 25 spins and an audience of 15738. At ILR, the song jumps 18-7 with 1263 plays and an audience of 25305.

"My Love Is Your Love" was the No.1 video at MTV UK last week (up from No.4) as well as the No.2 Box Breakers Video (up from No.3).

Expect further significant airplay gains next week.

Arista: Next UK Single...

Arista Records have made the unpresidented move of asking the fans which song they think should be the next UK single in the form of a competition.

The five singles options are:

If I Told You That
I Learned From The Best
Until You Come Back
You'll Never Stand Alone
I Was Made To Love Him

It's interesting to note that Arista do not consider "Heartbreak Hotel" a potential UK Single (a track I have always maintained would not find a home on UK radio).

All you have to do is Follow This Link and number the songs (1-5) in order of preference for the next single.

I am unsure how much this questionnaire will actually influence Arista's decision but if you do vote, please think wisely and consider what you think is going to be best for the UK as the next single. I have placed my vote tonight.

It's a shame "I Bow Out" and "Get It Back" are not up for consideration and quite surprising that the formula "If I Told You That" is.

Surprise Appearance...

Whitney Houston drives the crowds wild with a guest appearance at NYC Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Pride Celebration. Her performance was not advertised and was kept under wraps until the Diva arrived at Chelsea Piers where in-between 7,000-10,000 people were in attendance. She followed the performance by Erin Henderson and when they made the announcement and then appeared on stage. The energy went right off the scale! She performed two sizzling hot songs - remixes of HH and INRBIO with the crowds singing right along with her. At one point, a stage assistant came on-stage to give her the red fur jacket that was featured in the Oprah Show but she jokingly pretended to kick her away since the tempertures
were in the mid-90s. One individual who was a guest of the committee hosting the show said that she was in her glory and really enjoyed being there. Bobby Brown was with her but stayed backstage along with two massive bodyguards.

UK Chart Update...

"My Love Is Your Love" debuts at No.2 on the UK Singles chart - Whitney's highest debuting single ever and her fifth highest charting single ever (the other four were No.1).

The album "My Love Is Your Love" posts another week of impressive sales gains and climbs three places to No.6 - just one place lower than it's peak earlier in the year.

Full sales stats & airplay data will appear shortly.

UK Airplay Update...

"My Love Is Your Love" is up to No.15 on the UK Airplay Chart on it's fifth charting week. The song received 1060 spins (up 41%) and an audience of 35.06 million (an audience increase of 16%).

"My Love Is Your Love" was the No.5 biggest growing song for the tracking week with 308 plays more than last week. Itwas the highest debut on the MTV UK video chart debuting at No.4. it remains A listed at Radio One where it went up to No.17 with an audience of 11045 listeners (I still have to work out whether this should be multiplied by 1,000 as 11,000 listeners for the UK's main national radio station seems low). At Independent Local Radio, "My Love Is Your Love" is up to No.18 (from No.29) with 827 spins and an audience of 18,991 (again, I am starting to think this figure should be multiplied to represent 18 million). Will advise soon.

Billboard Update...

Apologies that this comes three days late - I have alot on at the moment.

You Have Arrived...

Welcome to Classic Whitney - the definitive Whitney Houston Website.  Launched on the evening of the first show on Whitney Houston's extensive My Love Is Your Love World Tour, I hope your journey with me to this website is as exciting and rewarding for you as it is for me.

Very few people know this, but at the end of last summer, I had decided that my work as a Whitney Houston 'Webmaster' was done and that the time had come to call it a day.   The last date of having a website for me was to be New Year's Eve 1998.   During December, I found that giving up would not be so easy - not for me (I think I could stop anytime; the website is not a measure of my devotion to the music and artistry of Whitney Houston), but for the thousands of people who visit every week in search of reliable news and information.
I already had the website I would visit every day as a Whitney Houston fan, but from that developed the desire to take it one step further.  To give back to Whitney Houston the credible profile on the internet that is afforded so many of her contemporaries by their fans.  I hope my work here would make Whitney proud; even moreso, I hope I have developed a website that Whitney's fans will be proud to be associated with.

Thank you for your patience - I trust you'll find this webspace worth your while.

Just to tempt you a little, here's just a small fraction of what you'll find here...

Chart Potential...

Arista UK have only ever once discounted a Whitney Houston single and that was "It's Not Right But It's Okay" - they've made the interesting decision to release "My Love Is Your Love" at full retail price of £3.99. The competition - ATB's "(9PM) Till I Come" and a single by some unremarkable boyband called A1 are also both on two CDs but discounted.

Early indications are that the ATB single is the front runner for No.1 on Sunday.

Whitney On Radio One...

Trevor Nelson flew out to the US to interview Whitney Houston for Radio One earlier in the week. During the interview, they played "It's Not Right But It's Okay" (Smooth Mix), "You'll Never Stand Alone" and "My Love Is Your Love".

The interview has to be one of the best with Whitney since the release of the album as Whitney talks in some detail about the hip hop market/culture and her place in music today. Quote: "I can't do 'How Will I Know' today" referring to the fact that her musical style has changed. She confirms that what she has done is re-invent Whitney Houston.

I will get a RealAudio file of this interview on the website during the week - it's definitely worth a listen.

French TV...

Whitney will be in 'Groove-blabla' on MCM (french music channel), Tuesday 22th June 18.30

Platinum Diva: UK Chart Update...

"My Love Is Your Love" is up to No.9 on the UK Albums Chart posting further gains and is this week certified platinum (300,000). The album spends it's 31st week on the UK Albums chart but something tells me it won't be another 31 weeks before we see the album pass double platinum. The album also re-enters the Dance Albums chart at No.5 this week where it spent considerable time at No.1 earlier on in it's life.

Tour Reviews...

Whitney begins her World Tour on Tuesday 22nd June 1999 and, like last year, I will create a reviews page. If you attend any of the shows, Please E-Mail Them To Me to share with the world.

BMG Press Release...

[This is the BMG press release for the UK Release of "My Love Is Your Love"]

WHITNEY HOUSTON
"MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE"

THE NEW SINGLE OUT ON 21st JUNE 1999.

Monday 21st June sees the UK release of Whitney Houston's stunning new single "MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE" , the title track of her current multi-platinum selling album.

Following hot on the heels of Whitney's No. 3 smash hit single "It's Not Right But It's Okay" (which spent 14 weeks in the charts), the new single "MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE" continues to portray Whitney at her contemporary best.

"MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE", written and produced by Fugee star Wyclef Jean, is a smooth reggae-tinged track with evocative strands of the late great Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry". Whitney's treatment of it's haunting and emotional lyrics bears witness to yet another aspect of her extraordinary vocal prowess.

The video for MY LOVE IS YOUR LOVE can now be seen on MTV and THE BOX and marks the highly successful collaboration between director Kevin Bray and Houston. Bray also directed the recent video for "It's Not Right But It's Okay" and the US hit "Heartbreak Hotel".

Whitney Houston has announced four UK dates as part of her World Tour '99. The dates, in September, will follow on the back of her US tour which kicks off in June and rolls into Europe and the UK through August, September and October. Tickets for the UK dates are on sale now. (See Tour Dates)

Fully Booked...

Whitney was interviewed on Fully Booked (UK TV show) this morning by Zoe A. from Radio One. The interview was taken the same day as the Pepsi Chart interview.

Whitney talked very briefly about the inclusion of Rodney Jerkins, Missy and Lauryn Hill on the album - she spoke of Lauryn and how Whitney would sing "I Was Made To Love Him" down the phone to Lauryn who had Zion pulling at her at the same time and Lauryn would say she was listening (when perhaps her attention was elsewhere).

Zoe commented that Whitney has achieved so much in her career and whether there was anything left for her to do (citing all the No.1 singles and awards she has won). Whitney said there really was nothing left for her to achieve that she could think of at this moment and that performing in South Africa was the biggest goal she had achieved. That was it for her.

The interview was laced with clips from "My Love Is Your Love" and "It's Not Right But It's Okay" videos. There was also a short clip of Whitney rehearsing with her band in the studio singing "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)".

Marvel & Eily Remix...

Another World First - In keeping with debuting the Wyclef Remix and the Salaam Remi Remix of "My Love Is Your Love" as well as the video for the single, www.classicwhitney.com has the exclusive first internet play of the Marvel & Eily Remix of the song.

The track sports two versions, the full length version is 7:14 and the radio edit is 3:31 - the full length version is debuted here.

Marvel & Eily bring Whitney to the speed garage arena for the first time in an official capacity with interesting results. The remix has not made any commercial concessions to appeal to the American desire for anthem styled music. The vocals are that of the original verse and the Wyclef remix chorus. UK Clubs will tear this one up.

Right here, right now - My Love Is Your Love - Marvel & Eily Southside Vocal Mix (Full Length Version).

[Special Thanks Matt - We Salute You!]

Billboard Spotlight...

[Taken from "Singles Spotlight" in Billboard Magazine]

RELAUNCH: Two weeks ago, Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay" (Arista) was awarded a retail launch star, as its jump in chart position was fuelled by the retail availability of the vinyl maxi-single and CD maxi-single. This issue "Okay" moves 17-11 on the Hot 100 while earning another retail launch star and the title of Greatest Gainer/Sales because the regular-length cassette and CD configurations hit stores. "Okay" scans 42,000 units this week, 25% of which are attributed to the maxi-singles and 75% to the regular-length singles. The song is also growing at radio, particularly at R&B, rhythmic top 40, and top 40.

Arista Confirms Oprah...

[From Arista Records]

Don't miss the Oprah Show on Monday - It's a full hour with Whitney Houston!!! Whitney and Oprah talk about My Love Is Your Love, the album and the tour, and her Dolce and Gabbana outfits for the tour. Whitney performs "It's Not Right But It's Okay", "My Love Is Your Love" and "Greatest Love Of All".

My Love Is Your Love: New Remix!!...

Get this - I am hoping to have the Marvel & Eliy Southside Vocal Remix of "My Love Is Your Love" on the website sometime this weekend - this is an Arista commissioned speed garage remix of the song which appears to be tailor made for the UK club scene. It's not clear as yet whether this remix is going to be on the UK CD single or not which is due for release on Monday.

Weekend Whitney...

Whitney Houston will feature on the Sunday morning UK TV show Fully Booked this weekend in an interview from the US. Also, don't forget Whitney's Sunday night Radio One interview with Trevor Nelson.

Pepsi Chart...

A screen capture of Whitney Houston on last night's UK Pepsi Chart show - More images and the RealAudio of the entire segment will feature on the www.classicwhitney.com website.

She's A Bitch...

MISSY In an interview featured on the UK teletext service (Channel 4), Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott has said that her song "She's A Bitch" was inspired by her work with Whitney Houston. I don't have all the details or the context of what was said first hand, but apparently, Missy commented about Whitney's working style in the studio right down to the positioning of the mic.

"She's A Bitch" is apparently not a derogatory song about Whitney but more a song about a woman in control - when I get clearer info on this interview, I'll post it here.

[Thanks Sanj]

Whitney On The UK Pepsi Chart...

Tonight's interview with Whitney Houston on the UK Pepsi Chart Show was interlaced with the My Love Is Your Love video. Whitney talked about the lyrics of the song as well as the range of young producers who worked on the album. She also mentioned her respect for Aaliyah's music.

The interview wasn't very long and featured a lot of information which we've already heard before about the making of the album.

Whitney confirmed that Will Smith is working on the final write-up for "Anything For You" which will go into production next year. She also talked of her desire to have a son.

Hopefully, I will have the RealAudio of the interview and some screen captures at the weekend.

Back In London?...

Trevor Nelson has just said on Radio One that Whitney Houston will be on his show next week (10-12pm Sunday 20 June 1999).

It's not clear whether this is a pre-recorded show or whether Whitney is coming back to the UK at the end of the week. The Pepsi Chart have already confirmed an appearance on Thursday but that is supposedly a satellite linked performance.

My Love Is Your Love Release Date...

Mark Goodier, the Radio One DJ who presents the UK Top 40 singles stated the release date of "My Love Is Your Love" as 28 June 1999 - It's not clear as yet whether this was a mistake or whether the release has indeed been put back a week.

Things should become clear during the week when Music Week publishes the releases for the coming week. The BMG Backstage Website still cites the release date as 21 June as does the HMV Website. Whitney is already confirmed to appear via satellite link up on Thursday night's Pepsi Chart (Channel 5).

[Thanks Craig/Bryn]

UK Charts...

"My Love Is Your Love" continues to perform well as it moves back up to No.10 on the UK Album Chart 30 weeks in. It's success is attributed to the steadily growing airplay of the title track.

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" leaves the UK Singles Chart after a 15 week career - it's rapid decline in the past two weeks obviously due to the shift in focus to the album. The song is No.16 on the R&B Singles Chart on it's 16th Chart Week.

So She Begins...

Expect to see a live satellite link up with Whitney Houston on the UK Pepsi Chart Show this week. No details yet, but it's likely to be a live performance of "My Love Is Your Love".

Hot100 Airplay for "It's Not Right But It's Okay" goes up two places to No.17 and sales remain at No.21 (both bulleted). Hot R&B Airplay is at No.15 and sales are at No.13 (both bulleted).

The commercial single was released this week and will effect the chart announced on Thursday of next week.

My Love Is Your Love: Single Format...

According to the Capital Radio Website, "My Love Is Your Love" will be released in the UK on one CD (the norm is two) and at full price (the norm is for first week discount).

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" was the first ever Whitney Houston single to be discounted in the UK and it seems Arista are not going to make this a regular occurance. The decision to release on one CD - as Capital Radio seem to state - means that three tracks will be featured which is the maximum allowed in the UK. The single's chances for a No.1 debut remain strong although all will become clearer later next week.

Oprah...

Whitney Houston will appear on The Oprah Show on 18 June 1999.

Subway Scholar...

``Straight Out of Brooklyn'' director Matty Rich has been hired to rewrite and direct ``Subway Scholar,'' a fact-based story for Showtime Family that will star Pam Grier, and will be exec-produced by Whitney Houston and Debra Martin Chase.

Like Rich, the protagonist hails from the tough streets of Brooklyn. Camara Barret, a high schooler living comfortably in Jamaica with his grandparents is brought to the United States by his mother and stepfather, smack into a rough Brooklyn neighborhood.

He has such a hard time with his abusive folks that they kick him out. Living on the street and in homeless shelters and mentored by a caring principal (Grier), the boy not only becomes student body president and valedictorian, he gets a scholarship to Cornell.

The film was originally written by Rama Stagner. Rich will likely get into production by fall while waiting to see what HBO does with the Tupac Shakur biopic he scripted and expects to direct.

No Guns...

USA Today featured a full-page ad from "Handgun Control" on 9 June 1999 which is "An Open Letter to the National Rifle Association"; it is signed by hundreds of celebrities, including Whitney Houston. This is the text of the ad kindly reproduced by Chip:

We are not "gun haters". But we hate what guns are doing to our commu- nities, our schools, our families and, most especially, our children. Guns do not bleed. Children do. Every day we lose nearly 13 children to gun violence in this country. A classroom every other day. This debate is not about guns. It's about our children. Whatever you think about the 2nd Amendment, our children do not have a "right to keep and bear arms." In fact, it's not about anyone's right to own a firearm. It's about everyone's right to "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." It's about the responsibility that we all have for keeping guns out of the hands of criminals, children and other prohibited purchasers. It's about the simple things that gun owners and non-gun owners alike can do to prevent children and other prohibited purchasers from getting guns.

We stand for these basic principles:

*No child should have unsupervised access to a firearm.
*No handgun should be sold without a child safety lock.
*No gun should be sold without a background check. No exceptions.
*There should be a minimum waiting period of 72 hours on all handgun purchases to provide a "cooling off" period and to give police time to complete a thorough background check.
*No one should be able to buy more than one handgun per month. The only people who need to buy more than twelve handguns per year are the professional gun trafficers who make a living reselling guns to children and criminals.
*No more semi-automatic assault weapons. No more ammunition clips holding more than 10 rounds. We don't need more killing power on our streets.

If we do all these things, not a single law-abiding adult would be denied a firearm for self defense, for recreation or any other legitimate purpose. Not a single one. But we might just save the life of a child and spare some family a lifetime of sorrow. Is that too much to ask?

[Thanks Chip]

Music Week Review...

[This Is What Music Week Have To Say In Their Review Of The "My Love Is Your Love" Single]

The elegantly-layered production and Houston's effortless vocal performance - not to mention echoes of a very familiar Bob Marley chorus - lift this album title track above the standard R&B fare. An A-listing at Radio One is being supported by heavy exposure on both The Box and MTV UK.

Can't Wait...

A large quantity of European Imports of the "My Love Is Your Love" single have appeared at UK music stores this past week to fill the high demand for the single. Pre-release enquiries about the single are apparently very high.

UK Airplay News...

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" continues it's steady radio decline at UK Radio slipping to No.39 (from last week's No.29) on it's 20th Airplay Chart week. The song received 516 plays (down 45%). It's audience for the tracking week was 16.78 million listeners (down 41%).

"My Love Is Your Love" continues it's steady gains at UK Radio - It's up to No.25 (from No.33) on it's 3rd Airplay Chart week. Radio played the song 467 times (an increase of plays by 43%) and it's audience for the week was 21.45 million listeners (up by 31%).

The commercial single for "My Love Is Your Love" is not due for release until 21 June and is the No.3 Pre-Release single this week. The song was played 13 times by Radio One (giving it an audience of 8,202 listeners).

UK Chart News...

[UK chart update for the week ending 12 June 1999]

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" falls from No.58 to No.65 on it's 15th UK chart week. On the R&B Singles front, it's down to No.12 (from No.10) having now sold 500,000 copies. It's the eighth best selling single for the year to date.

The album "My Love Is Your Love" slips to No.13 this week (from No.10) on it's 29th chart week. It actually gained sales over last week and is expected to hit Platinum shortly.

ADVERTISMENT FOR WEMBLEY TOUR DATES

THIS IS THE FULL PAGE ADVERTISMENT APPEARING IN LONDON'S PRESS TODAY ANNOUNCING
WHITNEY HOUSTON AT WEMBLEY ARENA 15 & 16 SEPTEMBER 1999

Tour Information...

The Platinum Club UK have not yet issued tickets for the UK shows but have confirmed that premium seats have been reserved for the fanclub. The fan club also revealed that although two shows have been announced, a provisional booking of four Wembley Arena dates have already been penciled in.

In 1986, Whitney played five shows at Wembley Arena which were all sold out. In 1988, Whitney set a new record for the Arena when she performed nine sold out shows. She improved on this in 1991 when she set a new record of ten shows (a record later broken by Prince who performed 16 shows). Her 1993 tour took Whitney to London's Earl's Court for three sold out shows - the emphasis for that tour was on small - which for London meant few dates and ticket touts had a field day.

It is not clear as to whether Whitney will continue to add dates to fill demand in London or limit the number of shows she performs. Watch this space.

UK Airplay Info...

"My Love Is Your Love" is up to No.33 on the UK Airplay Chart from last week's No.44. The song was played 327 times, up 53% on last week. It's total audience for the week was 18.66 million listeners - an increase of 18%.

Significant airplay gains for UK singles are usually seen the week before a commercial release or even the actual week of release.

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" is down to No.29 (from No.20). It received 750 plays, a drop of 15% and it had an audience of 23.64 million listeners (down 12%).

Bootleg UK...

The Face magazine (UK) has a very interesting article about bootleg remixes in the UK. Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay" is quite central to the content of this article (excerpts follow):

- - Currently breaking all records are no less that nine bootleg remixes of the song. They were delivered just a day before by an anonymous man in a shiny grey Mercedes. All copies were sold by the end of the afternoon at £6.99 a go.

- - ...Currently, the trade is in huge R&B radio hits such as Faith Evans' "Love Like This" and Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay" retailored specifically to take in the urgent bump'n'hustle of UK Garage. These, in turn, stimulate the relentless turnover of white labels that keeps the dancefloors and pirate stations of the garage community at boiling point. At the last count, Whitney's record company had heard ten bootlegs, all traceable to a sole US import single bearing the acappella track. Curiously, Whitney's US record company, Arista, had chosen not to include the mandatory spoiler noise - usually some background percussion running through the acappella, intended to prevent bootleggers from getting a 'clean' vocal sample.

- - One of the Whitney Houston bootlegs coupled "It's Not Right But It's Okay" with Shanks and Bigfoot's garage anthem "Sweet Like Chocolate."

- - [comment] "Bootlegs definitely increase the public's awareness of an artist, and don't really affect sales," says Jamie Topham, who manages club promotion for Whitney Houston in the UK. "People hear 'It's Not Right But It's Okay' on a bootleg and buy the official release, thinking it'll have that mix on it. There were maybe 15,000 copies sold on bootleg, but 500,000 of the official release were sold. Because we're owned by an American company, they commissioned R&B and tribal house mixes for the single, and they did well. But they don't understand it if we say we need a Booker T mix for the underground garage scene."

Apparently, the KCC remix of It's Not Right But It's Okay is a reaction to the demand for a UK influenced remix of the song. It's late, but we got it - Manish.

KCC's It's Not Right But It's Okay...

Nervous of RealAudio overkill, but still compelled to share this one with you - the KCC's Release The Love Groove Bootleg Mix is now available at this website.

This remix is just over seven minutes long and a little heavy on the bass in parts (like the beginning) but really has to go down as one of - if not the - best remixes of the song. It's certainly the closest we've got to a soulful, uptemp remix. Listen out for the clever backing vocal emphasis later on in the remix.

Turn Me Up, Turn Me Up, Turn Me Up...

Whitney Houston's radio success over last week has clearly made an impact on sales of "My Love Is Your Love" as the album rose from No.27 to No.18 this week. Here's her airplay information for the UK:

"It's Not Right But It's Okay" holds at No.20 on it's 18th charting week. It's now on a steady decline as it loses 19% of it's audience to 26.55 million. It remains an A-List song at London's Capital Radio.

"My Love Is Your Love" climbs 53 places to No.44 on the UK airplay chart. It wins the award for the Biggest Increase In Audience as it claims 214 plays (up 73%) and a total audience for the week of 15.82 million listeners. That's an audience increase of 137%.

Everybody's Free...

Has anyone heard Baz Luhrmann's "Everybody's Free"? Basically, the song is really hot in the UK and features an American man talking all the way through the song and somewhere in the middle he says "....It's not right but it's okay...yeah...thanks Whitney".

Quite bizarre.

My Love Is Your Love Video Review...

The opening scene is of the New York skyline, the sound of what seems to be a train or tram can be heard in the background and the city's lights all go out in two or three phases. It's a now a dark city with just the darkening blue of the night sky is visible.

The music of "My Love Is Your Love" begins and the track remains faithful to the original version of the song throughout. Whitney Houston is seen dressed in a brown leather jacket and yellow/orange top climbing some stairs in what appears to be a theatre. One of the first things that immediately tell you think video is different is the hair. The cut is a short, fairly tight afro almost akin to Lauryn Hill's hair a la her "The Score" days with The Fugees. A woman in uniform is sat somewhere in the vicinity in a ticket booth. There is the blurred movement of people all around and passing in front of Whitney as she begins to sing.

The video progresses to visualise the first verse in the most appropriate, but fairly understated manner to total effect. Whitney is stood in the middle of the street, people in the distance behind her as well as what appears to be trams. A man is being arrested by two policemen as his friends watch on, another man slowly looks up to gaze into the camera, his eyes relay his poverty and desperation. Two lovers make out in a secluded corner.

Whitney is then seen slowly walking towards a street party, almost a carnival atmosphere. Her hand is shown to flick the switch that lights up the stage and she progresses through the people dancing on the street as she takes off the leather jacket. She is soon on the stage with Wyclef just behind her on the deck. Whitney now has a denim jacket on and the Lauryn Hill similarity seems even more apparent. I'm sure that if you blur your eyes a little you'd think it was Lauryn. It works well for Whitney. She's not out of place.

The bridge of the song has Whitney doin' the hop/bounce she first did on the Letterman performance of "My Love Is Your Love". The sound of the crowd at the foot of the stage is increasingly more apparent as the song progresses and this adds to the realness of the video - there is no agenda here. The camera pulls back as the song fades.

Whitney's performance of "My Love Is Your Love" was also aired on the Friday night prime time showing last week. She was dressed more or less the same as her "It's Not Right But It's Okay" performance (both recorded in February) and performed the song as is on the album.

The original release date for the single was 17 May so it's likely TOTP had committed to airing the performance that date and stuck to it. Expect it to be replayed the Friday before it's release - date still to be confirmed.

It's Not New But It's A Remix Video...

MTV UK's The Late Lick had the 'first showing' of the video for the smooth remix of "It's Not Right But It's Okay." The video is basically the same as the other two versions (original video and the Thunderpuss 2000 video) with the inclusion of some new footage. The new scenes include some extra footage of the women at the end of the video singing together and some new clips of Whitney on her own singing the song. The most significant change is the inclusion of some screens which apparently show photo the now infamous guy of the song . He appears on some screens as photos of him outside and then later with 'the other woman'.

Trevor Nelson, the VJ, mentioned that the video could see the return of the song to the charts - a bit difficult though as the UK charts are 100% sales based and the smooth remix will not be issued in the UK on it's own right.

There is no word as yet on the video to Whitney's new UK single "My Love Is Your Love."

Whitney Houston has had a long and impressive chart stay with her current hit "It's Not Right But It's Okay", which debuted at number three on the sales chart and has since meandered up and down in a fairly random manner. It has had a more conventional and impressively building airplay career - though it has now passed it's peak - moving 63-48-37-28-24-16-15-14-8-10-8-13-14-14-15-19.

Ultimate Divas...

Ultimate Divas: The Greatest Female Vocalists of Our Time' Celebrates 17 World-Class Singers.

Collection ranges from Billie, Lena, Ella and Sarah to Aretha, Whitney, Tina, Dionne and Diana; set for June 1st in-store release. Liner notes by Nelson George confirm the first-class arrival of pop, jazz and especially R&B singers into the 'Diva' pantheon.

An essential new collection that gathers together the most outstanding female voices in pop, jazz and R&B, ULTIMATE DIVAS: THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALISTS OF OUR TIME confirms the notion that has gained wide acceptance over the last decade - that the term 'Diva' no longer belongs exclusively to the classical opera world. The new album is set for June 1st in-store date.

Executive producer of ULTIMATE DIVAS was Clive Davis, who has served as executive producer of Arista albums by Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Monica, Deborah Cox, and other artists; as well as last year's best-selling collection, ULTIMATE BROADWAY. Project direction for ULTIMATE DIVAS was by Steve Bartels and Gary Pacheco.

An extraordinary array of talented women who have never been heard together in such an anthology before, ULTIMATE DIVAS begins its program with legendary recordings from Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Judy Garland, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald, the singers who provided the roots of female vocal artistry in the modern pop era. Gladys Knight, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick and Patti LaBelle present a seamless transition into the contemporary '90s. The current decade is represented by Chaka Khan, Annie Lennox, Toni Braxton, Mary J. Blige, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. (See compete sequence below.)

"For most of the 20th century, jazz, blues and pop singers were regarded by the most prestigious cultural gatekeepers as, at best, second-class citizens," writes noted author and music historian Nelson George in his liner notes to ULTIMATE DIVAS. "Whereas the opera diva was a symbol of high-brow culture, these other forms were viewed as low-brow, whose mass appeal somehow confirmed their very unworthiness. Thankfully, the second half of this century has seen those notions overturned."

Whether it was Annie Lennox's Grammy-nominated Arista album Diva or Whitney Houston's stunning "I Have Nothing" (both 1992 recordings) that began to change the public's mind, or Aretha Franklin's showstopping performance of the Puccini aria "Nessun Dorma" at the Grammy Awards in 1998 - the end result cannot be denied. VH1's "Divas Live" united Aretha, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan and Shania Twain for a landmark television event (and subsequent album and home video) that established the dominance of pop, jazz and especially R&B singers. "Divas Live '99," with ULTIMATE DIVAS' Whitney Houston, Tina Turner and Mary J. Blige among this year's stars, returned to television on April 13.

"The diva persona - one of grand gestures, regal demands and celebrated talent - has become part of our cultural folklore," Nelson George writes. "In the last few decades 'diva' has become a more democratic word, one now associated with pop music. Now the soul singer with gospel roots, the jazz vocalist with impeccable phrasing, and the pop star who can powerfully propel a solid hook are the world's divas - something conformed by the ULTIMATE DIVAS collection."

'ULTIMATE DIVAS: THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALISTS OF OUR TIME:

1. Billie Holiday - My Man (Mon Homme) 1949
2. Lena Horne - Stormy Weather 1943
3. Judy Garland - Over the Rainbow 1960
4. Dinah Washington - What a Difference a Day Makes 1959
5. Sarah Vaughan - Broken Hearted Melody 1959
6. Ella Fitzgerald - Someone To Watch Over Me 1959
7. Gladys Knight - Midnight Train To Georgia 1973
8. Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It 1984
9. Chaka Khan - My Funny Valentine 1995
10. Annie Lennox - Why 1992
11. Diana Ross - Touch Me In the Morning 1973
