Still A Thrill...

I have it on good authority that last week's Grammy win for Whitney was a bona fide thrill for her and she was very happy.

The Brits...

[RealVideo 1MB, 4:04mins]

We're just three days away from Brits 2000, the most prestigious awards ceremony of the UK music calendar.  Now would be a good time to make the RealVideo clip of Whitney Houston's outstanding performance from last year's Brits available.

Dressed as she did in the video - this was the first time Whitney unveiled her new look and sound to the European audience.  No less than thirty dancers joined Whitney for the performance of 'It's Not Right But It's Okay'.  In the weeks that followed, 'My Love Is Your Love' was propelled into the top ten of every European album chart.

Whitney is nominated this year for Best International Female at the Brits.  Also in the category are Macy Gray, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez and Mary J Blige.  The award will be presented to the winner on Friday 3 March 2000 and will air the following evening.

Whitney will not be attending the ceremony.  She is due to be presented the Artist Of The Decade award at the Soul Train Music Awards on Saturday 4 March (which also happens to be Bobbi Kristina's birthday).

Deborah Cox...

[Text From Deborah Cox Official Mailing List]

By now you all have heard out the duet.......I am so elated and extremely excited at the idea. My Musical Director, Shep Crawford wrote the song. I will let you know more about it the closer we get to releasing it and as I write to you so I don't GIVE IT ALL UP!!!!! We will record it next week together.

As soon as I finish this song with Whitney I will continue to work on more songs for the third album. I am "so" ready for some new joints to perform!

Dutch Chart Update...

On the Dutch Top 100, 'I Learned From The Best' drops seven places to No.45 (11th week).

The album,  'My Love Is Your Love' is a non-mover at No.19 on the Album Top 100 (65 weeks on the chart).

George Michael Duet...

Whitney warms to George duet after 10 years of frosty silence.

02/27/2000
The Express On Sunday
Copyright (C) 2000 The Express On Sunday; Source: World Reporter (TM)

IT has taken 10 years for the frost to thaw between two of the world's biggest-selling singers. But George Michael and Whitney Houston have finally drawn a line under a decade of bitter relations and agreed to record a romantic duet.

The diva, who is as famous for her fiery moods as she is for her singing, has forgiven Michael for snubbing her in 1989. He turned down her offer to team up for a ballad because her famous voice "left him cold".

Whether Houston has forgotten his slight is doubtful - her allies made it clear the former Wham! heart-throb was not her first choice as a singing partner. The 37-year-old US star had been hoping to record with Michael Jackson but the two could not agree on their "artistic direction," Jackson's producer admitted.

Rodney Jerkins, a 22-year-old master mixer who has been hired by the Spice Girls as well as Houston and Jackson to keep them in touch with teenage tastes, agreed the original plan had not gone smoothly. "The song was meant to be for Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson but we couldn't make that happen," he said. "The next person in line was George Michael." Now the duo are set to record If I Told You That later this year. A studio source said: "We tried to decide which two stars the world would most like to hear and, short of bringing Elvis and Lennon back from the grave, this was the most popular combination."

Michael, also 37, has just seen off a £7million lawsuit brought by the Beverly Hills policeman who arrested him in a public lavatory and is said to be looking forward to getting back to the recording studio.

He has had a number of successful chart-topping duets, which may have been behind his rejection of Houston's first double-act request. He turned her down after his 1987 hit with Aretha Franklin, I Knew You Were Waiting, went to number one for nine weeks.Michael had more success with Elton John and their hit Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me, an international number one. But Houston has had a much less distinguished career as half of a duo. She, too, has sung with Aretha Franklin but their It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be only reached number 29 and a joint venture with Mariah Carey, When You
Believe, only reached number four.

[Danny Mailed Arista About The Greatest Hits - Here's The Reply]

From my understanding and please keep in mind I am just the New Media person, we plan to release this single and have many remixes made available.

In fact one song on the Greatest Hits will be a remix of 'I Learned From The Best'.  We do not want to slow down the success of 'My Love Is Your Love', but we do want to get the Greatest Hits package out before the summer and close to the 25th Anniversary of the
label.

Here is some more info for you:

The Top 40 Remix of 'I Learned From The Best' will be on the Greatest Hits album.
Urban is out with the ballad as is AC.

Pre Grammy Report...

[Exerts From Fox 411 Report]

Whitney, Stevie, Santana Salute Clive Davis

What a night Tuesday night at the Beverly Hills Hotel as 500 movers and shakers in the record industry filled the ballroom to honor outgoing Arista Records president Clive Davis. This what Dick Clark said as he took the stage: "This is not the pre-Grammy dinner. The Grammys are the post-Clive Davis show."

Not only did Davis loyalist Whitney Houston perform an unbelievable 45-minute concert, she turned the whole thing into a celebration of her mentor. When she sang "I Will Always Love You," it was to Davis. When Natalie Cole joined her on stage to sing "This Will Be," she pointedly made the lyrics "an everlasting love" to Davis as well.

Davis announced, by the way, that in April, for his coup de grace, Arista will release "Whitney Houston's Greatest Hits." My sources tell me the double CD will include four or five new recordings. In June the company will release a new album as well from Whitney's mom, legendary soul singer Cissy Houston.

[Thanks Arthur]

USA Today: Grammy Preview...

Expect the unexpected from Grammys
By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

LOS ANGELES - Can this year's Ricky top last year's Ricky?

Ricky Martin, pop's favorite bon-bon shaker, stole the 1999 Grammys with a roof-raising, hip-swivelling La Copa de la Vida that catapulted his career to loco heights. When he returns in splashy encore on tonight's 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, he'll face stiff competition in the show-stopper category.

Marc Anthony: Is he the next Ricky Martin (AP)?   Performers on the three-hour telecast, airing on CBS at 8 ET live/PT tape-delayed, are plotting extravagant surprises.

"Marc Anthony could be the breakout artist this year," hints Michael Greene, president/CEO of the Recording Academy, which stages the Grammys. "There are a lot of spectacular performances."

Martin and Anthony are bookends in a lavish Latin music overview that also spotlights Poncho Sanchez, Chucho Valdes and Cuban sensation Ibrahim Ferrer, who will sing Mami Me Gusto.

Will Smith opens the show with assistance from David Copperfield. Santana and Rob Thomas will close the show with Smooth. In between, expect a wide range of moods and styles, from the classy Desert Rose duet by Sting and world music hero Cheb Mami to the rowdy rap-metal of Kid Rock, flanked by motorcycles and fireworks.

Whitney Houston, singing It's Not Right but It's Okay and I Learned From the Best, appears in a Wizard of Oz motif that opens in Kansas and ends in a big production number. Elton John, receiving the Grammy Legend Award during an all-star salute led by Billy Joel, will perform with the Backstreet Boys, who plan an a cappella tribute to past vocal groups.

Diana Krall and Erykah Badu team for a duet accompanied by George Benson on guitar. TLC submits No Scrubs and Unpretty. The Dixie Chicks do Goodbye Earl. An ensemble of musicians ages 9 to 13 tackles Thelonious Monk to promote arts education. Composer Edgar Meyer and violinist Joshua Bell deliver Short Ride Home and classical/bluegrass hybrid Death by Triple Fiddle. Also set: Britney Spears, Faith Hill and Sisqo.

The Staples Center, the show's largest venue to date, presents more advantages than headaches. The Recording Academy was asked for design input three years ago and has fine-tuned the sound system with high-tech gear.

"It's freed us up," Greene says. "We set up three stages. That means less blah-blah, chat-chat between performances, because we don't have to reset the stage."

Rosie O'Donnell, hosting for the second year, helped boost last year's show to the second-highest rating in six years, with more than 57 million viewers tuning in for all or part of the broadcast.

Performances are seen as stronger viewer magnets than the actual trophies, though both tend to boost album sales and chart positions. A sweep is predicted for Santana, the leader with 10 nominations. Eight wins would tie Michael Jackson for the most awards grabbed in one year.

Presenters include Bob Dylan, Moby, Dr. Dre, Lauryn Hill, Cher, Mary J. Blige, Macy Gray, Neil Diamond and 'N Sync.

[Thanks Blackatlantic]

French Chart Update...

MTV: Whitney Recruits Enrique, Q-Tip For Greatest Hits

When Whitney Houston delivers her greatest hits package in May, the collection will boast a bit of help from Enrique Iglesias, Deborah Cox, and Q-Tip, among others... not that she needs it.

The head of Houston's record label, Clive Davis, told MTV News that the venerable diva's upcoming greatest hits collection will carry her 1999 duet with Iglesias as well as a new duet with Canadian R&B songbird Deborah Cox. Houston's collaboration with Iglesias, "Could I Have This Kiss Forever," turned up on the Latin singer's "Enrique" album last year.

The Houston collection will also carry a new track written for the singer by Q-Tip and Raphael Saadiq.

The release would be Houston's first since 1998's "My Love Is Your Love," which has sold more than 2.5 million copies since its release in November of that year. It would also mark Houston's first greatest hits offering.

The album's climb will have a lot to do with a new commercial that was shown on Dutch television. In this commercial the album is called "....an album full of hits from a wonderful singer."

On another note: TMF, the Dutch version of MTV, had his own Valentine Top 40. This is the Top 5:

1. I Will Always Love You-Whitney Houston

2. (Everything I Do) I Do It For You- Bryan Adams
3. My Heart Will Go On - Celine Dion
4. Always - Bon Jovi
5. If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time  - R. Kelly

Ask Billboard...

[Classic Whitney's Resident Chart Guru, Lopez, Has Her Questioned Featured In Billboard This Week]

The Question:

As you may probably know, "I Learned From The Best," the fourth single from Whitney Houston's album "My Love Is Your Love," went to No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart. This is the fourth-consecutive single from her album reach No. 1 on this chart.

My question is, is this a record? Has anyone else ever had four consecutive No. 1 Dance/Club Play hits from one album?

Thanks in advance,
Lopez

The Answer:

Hello,

Technically speaking, "I Learned From The Best" isn't the fourth release from "My Love Is Your Love." You have to remember that her duet with Mariah Carey, "When You Believe," was promoted to radio -- but not, as far as I know, to dance clubs.

So, if you only specify dance clubs, then yes, "I Learned From The Best" was the fourth single worked from the album.

That said, Houston did not set a record by hitting No. 1 with "Best." I breezed through our chart archives, and in the past 11 years or so, at least three other artists have pulled four consecutive No. 1 Dance/Club Play tracks from one album.

Lisa Stansfield's 1997 self-titled Arista set saw the following tracks reach No. 1 on the Dance/Club Play chart: "People Hold On," "Never Never Gonna Give You Up," "Never Gonna Fall" and "I'm Leavin'."

C + C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat" also achieved the same distinction. The group's debut 1990 Columbia set spawned the No. 1's: "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)," "Here We Go," "Things That Make You Go Hmmmm..." and "Just A Touch Of Love (Everyday)."

Lastly, Janet Jackson's 1989 opus "Rhythm Nation 1814" can also lay claim to four consecutive No. 1 Dance/Club Play hits. The diva's A&M album saw its "Miss You Much," "Rhythm Nation," "Escapade" and "Alright" all climb to No. 1.

With Houston finding success on the Dance/Club Play chart, it makes perfect sense that her upcoming greatest hits set, tentatively due out April 18 on Arista, may include a number of dance remixes.

Missing You...

Classic Whitney was originally the name of two concept shows Whitney performed in Washington DC in October 1997.  The shows saw Whitney singing some classic songs from a generation passed and showcased her stature as the pre-eminent vocalist of this generation.

Missing You was performed on the 5 October 1997 show that did not air in most territories around the world in favour of the more concise show two nights earlier.  However, the latter show produced some classic moments and Missing You was one of those.  Dedicated to some tragic losses during the last decade including Diana, Princess of Wales, Notorious BIG and 2Pac, this Diana Ross classic is an understated highlight of the show.

Soul Train...

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - R&B trio TLC added three Soul Train Music Award
nominations to their collection of accolades Thursday, leading a diverse field of soul and R&B performers, announcers said.

Seven artists nabbed two Soul Train nominations each, while major sellers like Mariah Carey and rapper DMX, or acclaimed ingenues such as Macy Gray and Angie Stone had to content themselves with single nods.

The 14th annual Soul Train Music Awards will take place March 4 at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, and the two-hour show will be aired in syndication. The nominees and winners in the 10 categories are determined by 3,000-5,000 radio and retail executives and active recording artists.

``If you go to Source Magazine readers then DMX would have 20 nominations,'' Soul Train executive producer Don Cornelius told Reuters. ``But we don't send out ballots to manifestly one person or to one demographic, and they don't vote that way.

``Contrary to what you read in the media, hip-hop is not the greatest thing that ever happened to black folks, it really isn't. I think it's something that white people indulge in to an extent. They'll buy hip-hop records, but most of them wouldn't be caught dead at a hip-hop concert.''

TLC's hit album ``FanMail'' earned nominations for best R&B/soul single (''No Scrubs'') and R&B/Soul album, both in the band, group or duo categories; and R&B/soul or rap album of the year. The album yielded seven Grammy nominations and TLC also won an American Music Award last month.

Also competing for album of the year honors are double nominee Mary J. Blige's ``Mary,'' DMX's ``Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood'' and R. Kelly's ``R.''

Blige and DMX will also receive special entertainer of the year awards, which were previously announced.

Other double nominees are singers Whitney Houston, Donell Jones, Brian McKnight and Ginuwine, and groups Destiny's Child and Ideal. Twenty-three artists received one nomination each.

The show's hosts will be TLC member Lisa ``Left Eye'' Lopes, actor Shemar Moore and singers Tamia and Eric Benet.

Whitney Houston's nominations are in the following Categories:

Best R&B/Soul Single, Female

"Ex-Factor" Lauryn Hill
"Heartbreaker" Mariah Carey feat. Jay-Z
"My Love Is Your Love" Whitney Houston
"Chante's Got a Man" Chante Moore

Best R&B/Soul Album, Female

"Mary" Mary J. Blige
"On How Life Is" Macy Gray
"My Love Is Your Love" Whitney Houston
"On The 6" Jennifer Lopez

Beverly...

BeverlyA few years from now Beverly will be known as the woman who went from working at a local Pizza Hut to an amazing recording career--on the basis of one phone call. On the other end of the phone was Tracey Edmonds, CEO of Yab Yum Entertainment, who ignited this singer/songwriter career to the forefront of the Urban music landscape.

Beverly (no last name) began the road to her recording contract at the age of four, singing in the adult gospel choir at her church. "I come from one of those families were everybody can sing," Beverly says. She grew up listening to singers like Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Aretha, and her main inspiration, Whitney Houston. "When I first saw Whitney's The Greatest Love of All video, I said to myself, 'I want to do that,' remembers Beverly.

"I think we have to give our young people something more than what gets on the radio today," she continues. "I'm not selling sex. I refuse to do that ... I believe talent will win out."

Beverly is now in the capable hands of the Edmonds family (Tracey and Babyface) who are now crafting her career. After becoming a background singer for Babyface, she performed on his MTV Unplugged show. Then she recorded with Blackstreet on "Can't Get You Out Of My Mind" from the Edmonds-produced film, Have Plenty. Next, a dream was fulfilled for Beverly when she performed on "You'll Never Stand Alone," with her idol Whitney Houston on her CD Your Love Is My Love.

One listen to Beverly's debut Heart and Soul, (Yab Yum/Elektra) and it's obvious that this soulful singer has the passion and sincerity of her role models. Her first single "You Came Along," rings with old school honesty. "I'm not in this for fame," she says. "I do this for the love of music, and for the opportunity to perform."

Diva Report....

Houston on Diva Duty for Smith  - Mr Showbiz Article

You're making a movie called Diva, and the part calls for a gorgeous, black singer with an obsessive fan or two. Mmm hmm, it's diva with a capital "D" Whitney Houston you'd be calling for the part.

Houston, whose big-screen acting career has been limited to The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale, and The Preacher's Wife, is attached to star in the remake of the extremely stylish 1981 French thriller. The remake had been intended for another diva, Diana Ross, but her option lapsed a year and a half ago.

Will Smith's production company snapped up the rights to the project from owner Canal Plus Image this week, reports Variety. Smith is not expected to appear in front of the camera. His Universal-based Overbrook Entertainment will co-produce with Houston's Brownhouse Productions.

The first Diva, based on the novel by Delacorta, was shot by Betty Blue director Jean-Jacques Beineix. The plot concerns a mail courier who surreptitiously tapes a performance by his favorite singer but ends up with the confessions of a murdered prostitute instead. Much chasing — including a memorable moped dash through the Paris metro in the original film — ensues. That film, which was released in the United States in 1982, starred real-life opera singer Wilhelmenia Wiggins Fernandez as the titular diva.

Smith is attached to another remake: Jonathan Demme is shaping up a remake of the 1963 romantic thriller Charade, which starred the inimitable Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn, for the actor-rapper to star in. Smith is currently shooting the period golf pic The Legend of Bagger Vance.

The DMA Review of 'I Learned From The Best':

PICK HIT
Whitney Houston
"I Learned From The Best"
Arista

For me, 1999 will be remembered as the year of Whitney Houston. The wholly unplanned organic crossovers of the "It's Not Right But it's Okay" and "My Love Is Your Love" remixes redefined both Houston's position in pop music (They were the hit POP versions) and also the level to which the marketing of dance music in America can be successful and sustained.  (For what its worth the Hex Hector "Heartbreak Hotel" remix was pretty solid, too.)

And so here we are, a new year. Just as Thunderpuss 2000's remix of "It's Not Right But It's Okay" altered everyone's perception of Whitney Houston at this time last year, Hex
Hector and Mac Quayle's massive reproduction of "I Learned From The Best" the fourth single from "My Love Is Your Love," will do it again. Reproduction? That's right. For the first
time in her storied career, which has included many a club hit along the way, Houston has gone back to square one, contributing new vocals to flesh out the house version of her latest single (some of the original vocal track remains as well) AND SHE NAILS IT.

"I Learned From The Best" is the most "traditional" Whitney song on My Love Is Your Love; it's one of the grand, heartbreaking, reflective ballads she built her career on, with just the right dash of powerful yet, melancholic horns lending musical support.

For the HQ2 CLUB MIX, Hector and Qauyle pull out all the stops to transform the song into grand heartbreaking dance anthem. The horns are a prominent feature in the mix, while the duo's trademark thick as molasses percussion (with a defiantly militant edge in the intro) forms an unshakeable base. Hector and Quayle often use synths in their mixes that are key to the overall sound without becoming too involved in the main melody; such as the case here, save for the middle break, when the pair rip through a spectacularly over-the-top run that is matched only by the sheer force of Houston's looped vamps. Also notable is how Hector and Quayle use something as small as Houston's breathing as part of the record's sound, looping her exhale to the beat and the in effect creating another percussive element of the mix.

And the there's Houston herself, who deserves her own paragraph. As terrific as the remixes of her previous singles were there is nothing like hearing a vocal designed to
complement a house beat, instead, of the other way around, and she goes for the gusto here, turning in a dramatic performance that digs into to the nuances of Hector's & Quayle's wonderfully complex production. At turns soft and mournful, then larger than life in only ways she can be, Houston caps off what is sure to be the first big dance record to be released in Y2K. It is a testament to how important dance music has become to her career that she joined in the remix process in the first place. As a parting thought, that's not even where the story ends. wait until the Junior Vasquez's remix of "I Learned From The Best" surfaces. It likely to join the legion of his all-time classic.

Whitney Houston To Play "Diva" In Film Remake

Whitney Houston is in talks to play the lead role of opera singer Cynthia Hawkins in a remake of the early '80s French thriller, "Diva."

Directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix in an eye-catching, quick-edit technical style, "Diva" became a cult favorite due to its fine acting, tight plot and a soundtrack which featured the London Symphony Orchestra.

According to "Variety," Will Smith's production company Overbrook Entertainment secured the remake rights earlier this week. Smith had been pursuing the project for years, but the remake rights had originally been optioned to Diana Ross.

When Ms. Ross' option expired a year and a half ago, Smith initiated talks with the film's owner, Canal Plus Image. The film will be produced co-operatively between Overbrook and Houston's Browhouse Prods. company, and screenwriter Rick Cleveland has been brought in to remake the script.

If the American remake follows the plot of the French original, then Ms. Houston will likely portray Cynthia Hawkins, an African-American opera singer who refuses to be recorded.

The action begins when an adoring fan secretly tapes a Hawkins performance and makes a bootleg for his personal enjoyment. From there, two different sets of thugs begin pursuing the naïve fan for the tape, one group who thinks it contains evidence of a murder, the other who seeks to capitalise on the tape's existence.

Houston's previous film roles include "The Preacher's Wife" (1996), "Waiting to Exhale" (1995) and "The Bodyguard" (1992).

TLC, Britney, Whitney, Santana To Hit Grammy Stage

When the lights go up on this year's Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles next month, multiple nominees TLC, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, and Santana will be among the performers on hand to spice things up.

Teen genie Christina Aguilera is also on board as a presenter, while talk show maven Rosie O'Donnell returns as the show's host.

"It's amazing, I have to say," double-nominee Britney told MTV News on Friday afternoon of her involvement with the Grammys. "At award shows, that's where I get the most nervous. I have to say I get really, really tense, so I know I'll be freaking out. I'm really, really excited." [RealVideo]

Spears went on to say that she is now off to Los Angeles to begin rehearsing for the February 23 Grammy broadcast. In addition to her performance, Spears is also up for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

Of course, the night's other performers are vying for plenty of awards as well. Santana's "Supernatural" album stirred up eleven nominations, while TLC's "Fanmail" garnered eight nominations and Whitney generated five nods.
