Anti-Voucher Group Draws Ire From Record Company

06/27/2000
Associated Press Newswires
Copyright 2000. The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.

DETROIT (AP) - A group that opposes school vouchers has stopped distributing a video featuring a Whitney Houston song after a complaint from Houston's record company.

ALL Kids First!, which opposes this year's ballot measure to allow state-funded vouchers, hired a consulting company to produce a promotional video.

A subcontractor hired by the consulting company used Houston's 1985 hit "The Greatest Love of All" in the video. Arista Records Inc., who says the subcontractor didn't receive permission to use the song, ordered ALL Kids First! to stop distributing the video.

"Naturally, we would prefer to resolve this problem amicably and trust you will not force us to institute formal legal proceedings," the company said in a letter.

Laura Wotruba, a spokeswoman for ALL Kids First!, said her group believed the subcontractor had permission to use the song.

"We did some checking and we were told that we did have permission," she told the Detroit Free Press for a story Tuesday. "We were completely surprised that we didn't have permission."

Wotruba said ALL Kids First! has asked people not to use the video and is no longer distributing copies of it.

The incident is a frustrating one for ALL Kids First!, which is already trailing behind the pro-voucher group Kids First! Yes! in fundraising. Kids First! Yes! said this month that it has raised $3.7 million; ALL Kids First! said it has raised about $500,000.

Voters will be asked in November whether to approve the proposal, which would allow vouchers worth $3,100 for students in public schools with low graduation rates. The vouchers could be used at private and parochial schools.

LOOKING not at all like a cocaine addict, Whitney Houston made a good impression on the crowd at the South Plainfield Middle School's graduation ceremony in New Jersey on Thursday. Houston, in a bright pink dress, came to see her eighth-grade nephew Gary Michael Houston receive his honors. Two bodyguards and a cop kept relatives of other students from getting too close.

Vibe Review...

Vibe Magazine (cover- Busta Rhymes):

With all of the speculation on Whitney Houston's personal life, we sometimes forget professional triumph. She is, after all, a singer who combines the creamy tone and pitch-perfect dramatic instincts of a born pop princess with a supple, silvery soulfulness.
The two-disc collection of timeless tunes and remixed classics, Whitney: The Greatest Hits, attests to her ability to turn drippy adult contemporary pabulum like " Didn't We Almost Have It All" into showcases for her virtuosity. Better still, it reminds us that given the right vehicle - such as a shimmering ballad like " Saving All My Love For You"- Houston can perform pure pop-soul magic.

Remixes of her past hits hold up impressively, thanks to the exuberant rhythmic intuition of such track masters as Junior Vasquez and David David Morales. On several new duets, though, Houston easily outclasses her collaborators: Enrique Iglesias on the sinuous, Latin-flavored " Could I Have This Kiss Forever," George Michael on the lithely thumping "If I Told You That," and Deborah Cox on the sassy " Same Script, Different Cast."
Whatever her personal foibles, Houston remains an invincible artist. Let's just hope some of that good love she keeps giving us is getting back to her.

German R&B Airplay:

R&B Club Tracks (DJ Playlist):
Fine - No.1 (Last week: No.1)

On the R&B Singles Chart, 'Fine' moved up to No.11 without a commercial 12" Vinyl or CD-Single out.  This is the first time ever that a song managed to climb so high on the R&B charts based on airplay alone.  Normally it would be impossible for an airplay only  song to climb that high, but Media Control (the German Chart compilation body) have  allowed 'Fine' to climb to No.11 due to its abnormally high airplay.

According to "Jam FM Radio" the song has 24% more airplay than the second highest song on the airplay chart, ''Try Again' by Aaliyah.

Enrique...

CHART BEAT : Enrique Iglesias' 'Be' On The A-List (Billboard - June 24, 2000)

BY FRED BRONSON

IT WAS ONLY NINE months ago that Enrique Iglesias had his first No. 1 hit on The Billboard Hot 100 with his chart debut, "Bailamos," from the soundtrack to "Wild Wild West." The second-generation star returns to the top of the chart this issue, thanks to the commercial release of an English-language version of "Be With You" (Interscope). The move on the main chart is fueled by a 40-1 rocket ride on Hot 100 Singles Sales.

"Be With You" is the third of Iglesias' four chart singles. The follow-up to "Bailamos," "Rhythm Divine," stalled at No. 32 in January. And Iglesias could soon have two titles in the top 10, as a commercial release is scheduled for his fourth chart entry. "Could I Have This Kiss Forever," a duet with Whitney Houston that appears on her greatest-hits collection as well as Iglesias' "Enrique" album, bullets 74-68 based solely on airplay.

Another New Record...

[Music Week Comment]

The pairing of superstars Whitney Houston & George Michael gives both artists another top 10 hit, with 'If I Told You That' - formerly a solo Houston track on the album 'My Love Is Your Love' - debuting at number nine.

Houston has achieved a unique record, debuting on both the UK and US charts with no fewer than three different singles and partners in the same week - in the US she debuts on the Hot 100 at 71 with Canadian diva Deborah Cox and 'Same Script, Different Cast' and at 74 with Spaniard Enrique Iglesias on 'Could I Have This Kiss Forever'.

UK Airplay...

'If I Told You That' is up to No.5 (from No.6) on the UK airplay chart, increasing it's number of plays by 5% to 1721 for the week and an audience impression of 65.74m (up 4%).

Radio One played the song 21 times in the week and the song climbs from No.22 to No.13  on their airplay chart (15.359m audience).  On Independent Local Radio, the song is up to No.6 (from No.8), an audience of 34.414m, spins of 1475 (up from last week's total of 1418).

'If I Told You That' remains A listed on all major UK radio stations including Radio One, B listed on Radio Two - an AC styled station.

Blues & Soul Review...

Whitney Houston - Fine

Cor, this big beauty hit the specialist stores around a month ago as a limited promo and couples Ms Houston and the production partnership of Raphael and the Abstract who inject some juice into the scene. This track is lifted from Whitney's recently released "Best of....." album and is one of three or four new tracks included for extra spice. "Fine" is not your typical Whitney sounding track, but prepare to get fully fulfilled with this 70's tainted groove, due to the string arrangement. Raphael and Q-Tip deliver a groove from heaven as the punch beat rolls and Mr Saadiq adds a tasty guitar riff or two, while Whitney delivers a superb vocal to put the icing on this dream. This track is hot and something a little special so keep 'em peeled. Rumours of a remix featuring the lyrical skills of Q-Tip are in circulation- suppose we'll have to wait and see. Clubs are lovin' it! included are the instrumental and accapella versions for your pleasure. This is by far my pick of my bunch in this issue. (BA)

The review is of the 12" vinyl set that is available in Britain, in limited editions.

The state of Florida DISMISSED the charge of cocaine in Bobby's system.  They did not  merely "let it slide".  It was dismissed because it could not be proven and if they did not dismiss it and Bobby chose not to plead, the state of Florida may well have lost their entire case against him.  Good grounds for a lawsuit from Bobby Brown.

Bobby has served more active jail time than anyone can recall for a 1st time D.U.I. charge.  He was held to a higher standard than any other 'average person', while he was never given preferential treatment by the court system, completely contradicting the legal process.

During his time at Broward County Jail, Bobby has been a model inmate, never complaining or asking for special treatment.

Internet media organisations should be challenged on their unfair reporting citing specifics for them to research - for example, how many of Bobby's critics have someone in their family or group of friends that has had one  violation for D.U.I and served 75 days in jail?  Internet sleuths, please research Florida's legal system, especially Broward county where several judges have been removed from the bench recently for ethics and criminal violations, as opposed to digging up allegations and innuendo on celebrities who can't possibly defend themselves from endless and baseless allegations on a global basis - nor should they, because any defence lends a small amount of credibility to the charge in some peoples eyes.

Please use the text of this report to post on Whitney Houston websites, bulletin boards, mailing lists, as well as mailing it to internet media organisations and ask them to at least consider what is being said here and ask that these organisations - as well as fans - take up the challenge of doing their own research.  The reporting can at least be fair and accurate.

Janet Speaks Out...

Janet Jackson will have an interview air on BET tonight at 11pm Eastern / 8pm Pacific.  In speaking for the first time about the break-up of her marriage with Renee Elizondo and why she kept it a secret, Janet says:

"I've always felt that you're never given a fair chance. Immediately when they (media) know (about a celebrity marriage), you know some people try and knock it or say it won't last. For instance, and not to bring them in it, but a lot of people did the same thing with Bobby (Brown) and Whitney (Houston). And I know they have their things that they are going through and they'll work through them, I hope so. But look how long they've stayed together ... Some people said, oh I'll give them six months or give it a year, and that's such  negative energy. That's such negative energy going into a beautiful thing, and I wanted my privacy and to try and have a normal family life as much as I possibly could."

Bobby Brown...

Statement from Bobby Brown (12 June 2000):

To my fans, people who bought my record and think I wasn't being a man about the situation, I have a disease, I am an addict, I am an alcoholic.   It's been really tough not seeing my family, but now hopefully I can get back to what I do best: dancing and singing. The day I get out is the day I start working again.

Bobby pleading guilty to charges of missing a meeting with his probation officer and failing to provide police with a urine sample. He had been on probation following a 1996 car crash, in which he ran into a Hollywood street sign while driving Whitney Houston's Porsche. Bobby was later found guilty of drunk driving and sentenced to a five-day stay in jail.

This time, Brown was sentenced to 75 days Broward County Judge Leonard Feiner, who was impressed enough by Brown's plea to let a further charge of cocaine use slide.   Whitney Houston, did not appear in court, but he was joined by his mother, Carole, who also acted as a character witness. "[Whitney] wants to help him, not hurt him," explained Brown's attorney. "If she showed up today it would have been a major zoo."

Carole Brown told the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel, "This has been very painful. I don't condone anything he did."

Bobby, 33, should be released from jail on July 18, as his 39-day spell in the Broward County Jail was credited as time served. As reported on Classic Whitney on 12 May, Bobby surrendered voluntarily to Florida authorities after US Customs met him at Newark NJ airport to tell him that Florida had a warrant out. Contrary to reports being published, he was not arrested by customs in N.J., he went to Florida on his own, not under arrest, and not accompanied by any Law Enforcement officials.

"I just want to continue on with my sobriety and get back home to my family," he told the Associated Press after the sentencing. "It's been really tough."

Syria...

Lion of Syria is dead..long live the pussycat
KENNETH PRATT

06/12/2000
Scottish Daily Record

SYRIA'S strongman has left his country facing an uncertain future - in the hands of a young man who was never meant to rule.

Eye doctor Bashar Al-Assad - an Internet fan with a passion for Whitney Houston and Phil Collins - never thought he would govern the country his father dominated for three decades.

But now he is set to pick up the reins of power after Syria's law was changed to allow a president as young as 34 - Bashar's age.

As thousands took to the street to mourn his legendary father, President Assad, Bashar was appointed commander of the army.

But fears he might not be strong enough to hold on to power in the turbulent field of Middle East politics were already surfacing...

Movie Sounds...

A little background music
Date: 10/06/2000

The big year for soundtracks in Australia was 1998, with six claiming the number one spot, according to ARIA. My Best Friend"s Wedding was four weeks at the top, Titanic (11 weeks), plus The Wedding Singer, Grease, City of Angels and Chef Aid: The South Park Album (all one week). The same year also saw the Armageddon, Godzilla and The Wedding Singer 2 soundtracks in the top 10.

Other soundtracks to sell by the truckload here in the '90s include Pretty Woman (1990); Grease (1991); Jesus Christ Superstar (10 weeks at No 1 in 1992); The Bodyguard (1993); Priscilla (1994) and Romeo and Juliet (six weeks in 1997).

And in the US, the Recording Industry Association of America says the best selling cinema soundtracks to date include:

1. The Bodyguard (1992, 16 million). Spawned the monster/monstrous I Will Always Love You plus four other hits, now all back with a vengeance on Whitney Houston's current No 1 Greatest Hits set. The US's ninth biggest-selling album to date.

2. Saturday Night Fever (1977, 15 million). This is the album that brought you disco interpretations of Mussorgsky's Night On Bare Mountain and Beethoven's Fifth. Honestly.

3. Purple Rain (1984, 13 million). Memorable songs (Purple Rain, When Doves Cry, Let's Go Crazy); one eminently forgettable movie.

4. Dirty Dancing (1987, 11 million). Is anybody owning up to buying this?

5. Titanic (1998, 11 million). The biggest-selling score soundtrack to date, helped by Celine Dion's dirge-like My Heart Will Go On.

6. The Lion King (1994, 10 million). Disney movie in Best Original Song Oscar win shocker (for Can You Feel The Love Tonight?).

7. Grease (1978, 8 million). The only soundtrack to an actual musical left in the top 10.

8. Footloose (1984, 8 million). American youth defies small-town Puritanism by getting on down to ... Kenny Loggins. Oh, and Bonnie Tyler.

9. Top Gun (1986, 7 million). Gave us Berlin's end-of-the-evening power ballad Take My Breath Away, Kenny Loggins's Danger Zone and the Righteous Brothers' You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling - all on one album. Are we meant to be grateful?

10. Waiting To Exhale (1995, 7 million). Chick flick, chick soundtrack. Whitney again, although not hogging the album this time.

DVD Review...

Houston DVD Offers Extras
JAY WEBB
THE DALLAS MORNING NEWS

Buying music video collections on DVD can be a hit-or-miss affair. Much too often they hold the same content as a VHS tape with slightly better resolution and inserted chapter breaks. If you're really lucky, they'll throw in a menu, but frankly, it's not enough to justify the inflated DVD price.

However, Arista has produced an intriguing DVD with more than just video clips. Whitney Houston: The Greatest Hits (Arista, DVD $24.98/VHS $19.99) traces the singer's 15-year career from pop-tart sweetheart doing awkward dances in pastel miniskirts to chart-topping disgruntled dance diva. And it unmasks the influences behind her.  Or make that influence, singular.

Arista label founder Clive Davis shaped Houston's early career, and, though she now presents herself as a tough independent entertainer, Davis still eerily appears by her side.
He makes sure his protege receives the royal DVD treatment, even getting her animated into an interactive Whitney with moving arms that point to each feature on the main menu.
The DVD is loaded with extra features that shed light on Houston's artistic evolution, a David LaChapelle photo session of the two and her first live television performance in 1985 on The Merv Griffin Show, where she's introduced by Davis.

In Houston's interview segment, she recounts the story of how Davis told her she had to record "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and that it would be her seventh No. 1 single. She did and it was, breaking previous records set by the Beatles and Elvis Presley. She didn't even like the song.

Most telling is an interview with Davis, who at one point refers to Houston as "a property" in reference to her crossover acting career.   It's these kinds of revealing facts that make DVD extras so much more than just a string of videos on VHS.

Sparkle...

NEW YORK (Variety) - Warner Bros. has set a remake of the 1976 film ``Sparkle'' with singer-actress Aaliyah poised to play the title role originated by Irene Cara.

Powered by a Curtis Mayfield soundtrack and vocals by Cara and Lonette McKee, ``Sparkle'' chronicled the rise and fall of a group of singing sisters during the 1960s. The story closely paralleled that of Diana Ross and the Supremes.

The film was directed by Sam O'Steen and scripted by Joel Schumacher. The ``Sparkle'' remake was set up at WB by Whitney Houston and Debra Martin Chase's BrownHouse Prods. The pair will serve as producers.

``Whitney and I always loved the movie, and felt that the music business is so pervasive, it's surprising there hasn't been a contemporary look at what happens behind the scenes,'' Chase said. ``And the studio wanted to be in the Aaliyah business.''

Aaliyah made her film debut alongside Jet Li in WB's action drama ``Romeo Must Die.'' That film has grossed more than $60 million and spawned a strong selling soundtrack featuring Aaliyah's song ``Try Again.''

E. Lynn Harris, making his screenwriting debut, has been signed to pen the contemporized redo. Harris calls the original ``an African-American classic.''

The remake will have an entirely new soundtrack. Aaliyah has been topping the charts since making her recording debut at age 14 in 1994 with the platinum-selling album ``Age Ain't Nothing But A Number.''

It's the second recent screen development for BrownHouse, which will produce ``The Princess Diaries,'' a comedy greenlit by Walt Disney Pictures with Garry Marshall directing.

New Nation Review...

[Great Review of 'Whitney The Greatest Hits From New Nation]

Whitney: The Greatest Hits (Arista)

During Every decade in R&B, there’s one female artist whose vocal style, mixed with the right material, stands tall. In the 60s there was Aretha, the 70s Diana and then Whitney in the 80s.

Seven albums, a staggering 140 million sales and an enormous list of awards later, Whitney brings out her greatest hits. The 36-track double CD complication takes you through a musical journey from her days of doggy pop wigs in tracks like I Wanna Dance With Somebody, to her vocal blossoming in I Will Always Love You. New Material like Fine produced by Q-Tip and Raphael Saadiq – take Whitney to even greater heights, changing Whitney's vocals to a much lower tone, with an added hip-hop bassline. An ideal gift for die-hards and, for those that think she’s a bland ballad singer, this album proves why she’s still perched on the diva throne.

4/5- Alive and kickin’ ass.

Anita Baker Speaks Out...

One of the finest vocalists of all time, Anita Baker, is interviewed in the July 2000 issue of Sister-2-Sister magazine in which she speaks out about the media's treatment of Whitney Houston.

Anita Baker ain't laughing at the Whitney Jokes. (This title also appears on the cover of the mag.)

I spoke with Anita Baker around the time that folks seemed to be attacking Whitney Houston left and right about her possible drug use. Anita was very distraught about it. She told me she's upset about people making jokes about Whitney. She explained that "Whitney is our Barbra Streisand and if you don't have anything good to say, Don't help to destroy her" She said, "It takes us three generations to build a WHITNEY HOUSTON - ARETHA FRANKLIN, CISSY HOUSTON,DIONNE WARWICK, on up to our Whitney." Anita went on the say,"The people on the radio don't mean no harm {white Folks} do this to their stars, so we're supposed to do it to ours because that's what they do. But it takes us so much more to come up than it does for them."Anita was reaching out to help sister Whitney.

There is more but nothing that leads directly to Whitney - They just go on to talk about the media and Black stars.  On page 16 there is a photo of Barbara and the caption reads- Barbra Streisand is an icon and Anita Baker feels that Whitney should be treated like one, too.

Whitney is feature though out this edition. There is a two page ad for the Greatest Hits package. There is also a photo of Whitney Posing with Puffy, Bobby and Clive at the Arista taping.

For whatever reason, BMG re-quoted the incorrect information two days after the DVD was issued.

BMG Backstage - New Release Info...

Whitney Houston: Whitney Duet with George Michael!

The inimitable Whitney Houston and the super talented George Michael have collaborated on a sensational track 'If I Told You That', released 5th June 2000.

This track is definitely an anthemic floorfiller and intertwines their distinctive vocals with Whitney singing the lead. An incredible collaboration - Who would miss out on hearing two legends singing together like this?!

'If I Told You That' is available on both CD and Cassette and is taken from the recently released "Whitney - The Greatest Hits" double album and has been produced by one of THE hottest producers, Rodney 'darkchild' Jerkins.

The CD features the original album version of 'If I Told You That' with a new remix by John Douglas plus the brand new track 'Fine', produced by Raphael Saadiq & our very own Q-Tip. The cassette also features the original album version of 'If I Told You That' plus a classic Dronez remix of the smash hit 'I'm Your Baby Tonight'

This has to be the smash of the summer - so don't be the one to miss out!

Music Week Chart Commentary...

Commentary From Alan Jones:

The Greatest Hits by Whitney Houston is number one for the second straight week, suffering a fairly minor (11%) dip in sales to just under 80,000, while beating off the challenge of Eminem's The Marshall Mathers LP (63,000 sales) fairly comfortably.  Britney Spears' Oops! I Did It Again slips 2-3, but it's sales (nearly 48,000), are easily the highest for a number three album this year.   These three albums give us our first all-American  top three for more than two years, with the leading British contenders being Tom Jones' Reload (down 3-4 but selling more copies - 37,000 - than when it was number one a fortnight ago) and Toploaders's debut album Onka's Big Moka, which sold nearly 33,000 copies to take fifth spot in The Moonlight and Achilles Heel.

More heavy discounting brings several old favourites - mostly Warner Music releases - back to the chart.  Simply Red's Greatest Hits leads the way at number 26 closely followed by Madonna's Ray Of Light and The Immaculate Collection (number 39 and 41) and The Corrs' Unplugged at number 44.

UK Airplay...

'If I Told You That' is up to No.8 (from No.9) on the UK airplay chart.  The song increased it's number of plays by 10% to 1550 for the week and it's audience was 58.41m (up 18%).

Radio One played the song 21 times in the week and the song holds at No.14 on their airplay chart (14.16m audience).  On Independent Local Radio, the song is up to No.10 (from No.12), an audience of 30.589m, spins of 1331 (up from last week's total of 1208).

The song is No.1 on the Pre-Release chart representing airplay hits that have not been commercially released.

UK Release...

'If I Told You That' will be issued on one CD and cassette in the UK.  A second CD does not look likely.

'If I Told You That' remains A listed on Radio One (UK).
