Natalie Cole, happy at lastBy Ann Oldenburg, USA TODAY Natalie Cole was asked to write her life story 10 years ago. "I'm glad I waited," she says. "I was not in the place I am today." Cole has spoken before of hitting rock bottom being hooked on heroin, completely broke and divorced from a man she loved. But in her new autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder (Warner Books, $25.59), written with Digby Diehl, Cole also reveals:
"It's not a feel-good book, all happy-happy," Cole says, "but I was able to look back on it with a joy and pride that, first of all, I got through it. We need to be able to find sources of encouragement and be sources of encouragement." She will be a multimedia source of encouragement. A CD called The Best of Natalie Cole, due out Nov. 7, will celebrate her 25 years in the music business. And she plays herself in a TV movie airing Dec. 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Taken from her book, the movie was to be titled Angel on My Shoulder, but the network thought it was too much like rival CBS' Touched by an Angel, so it's just The Natalie Cole Story . Cole thinks people may tune in out of curiosity because she's a celebrity, but she hopes viewers will see it as a story of "what can happen to a life." She sees that happening now with good friend Houston, whose alleged drug abuse has been tabloid fodder. Cole says she hasn't spoken to Houston since April. "I can't tell you how hard it is to see it. I'm on the other side of what people are going through my drug problem was all in the media. Now I'm on the other side. It's not a fun thing. But she's going to pull through. "Whitney's got a purpose. She has such a gift. She's a survivor." As is Cole. The singer describes her life now as "great," but "I still have serious anxiety attacks." She recently settled a lawsuit against her mother in which she and her siblings were seeking trust money owed them from their father's estate. Her son is 22 and at the Berklee College of Music. They are close. Her marriage to Fischer ended in divorce in 1995. "I'm not in any serious, intimate relationship right now. I'm so intolerant of anything that doesn't enhance my life. It takes a long time to get to that place." [Thanks Tyron]

Jersey-born activist as 'Voice of Millennium' JAY LUSTIG 10/21/2000 The Star-Ledger Newark, NJ Further evidence that it really is a small world, after all: Whitney Houston's grandparents were friends of Paul Robeson. That is one of the reasons the East Orange native will perform at "Paul Robeson: Voice of the Millennium," an all-star concert taking place Nov. 28 at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. ''It's close to her heart," said Patricia Houston, the singer's sister-in-law, who is a publicist for the event. "Paul Robeson was her father's godfather. She's an avid admirer of Paul Robeson, and has been for a very long time." The show, organized by the New York-based Paul Robeson Foundation, will be taped for airing on PBS in March, with NJN as the host station. Proceeds will benefit inner-city students at Rutgers University in Newark and the Paul Robeson Foundation Educational Mission, which teaches people about the life of the controversial Princeton-born singer, actor, athlete and activist. Houston will sing "I Loves You, Porgy" from "Porgy and Bess," and possibly participate in the show's grand finale, said event director and associate producer A. Curtis Farrow of the Jersey City-based production company, Irving Street Rep. Houston has no other shows scheduled for this fall, except for a Nov. 10 concert with her husband, Bobby Brown, in Las Vegas. Her last tour included an appearance at NJPAC that was canceled minutes before show time in July 1999 and never rescheduled. Other participants will include Cissy Houston (Whitney's mother), Gregory Hines, James Earl Jones, Ossie Davis, Melba Moore, Branford Marsalis, Angela Bofill, Denyce Graves, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, the Marble Collegiate Community Mass Choir, actor Avery Brooks and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. It will be a multimedia show, using vintage films, live satellite feeds of choirs from Wales and South Africa, and even a 3-D fantasy film sequence of Robeson, Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington visiting the Cotton Club in Harlem. (Audience members will be given 3-D glasses.) Paul Robeson Jr., a consultant to the Paul Robeson Foundation, said the seeds for the event were sown during the celebration of the centennial of Robeson's birth. The celebration took place in 1998 in New York. ''Not to knock New York, but he was born in New Jersey," said Robeson Jr. The idea, he said, was to "break new ground, and do a definitive, new-technology show, with all the bells and whistles, and with Paul Robeson coming home to his roots." The show's title, "Voice of the Millennium," is deliberately ambiguous, said Robeson Jr. "The idea is that he bridges both (millenniums): He was in the last one, but his vision was of this one." The event is "long overdue," said Newark native Melba Moore. "I'm surprised there hasn't been a lot more done for Paul Robeson." She said she admires "his integrity: being able to stand alone, go against the tide and stick to your guns during a time when you really didn't get any support." The 8 p.m. show will be preceded by a 6 p.m. dinner and awards ceremony at the Robert Treat Hotel in Newark. Tickets are $75 to $1,000, with the top price also including admission to the dinner. They are available through the New Jersey Performing Arts Center at (888) 466-5722 or (201) 659-4901. Whitney Houston, whose grandfather knew Paul Robeson, is one of many performers taking part in the show at NJPAC. [Thanks MG]
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - Prosecutors say they don't expect Whitney Houston to attend a hearing on a marijuana-possession charge against her, but an attorney will appear on her behalf. The arraignment was set for Thursday, but was pushed back to Nov. 2. If convicted of possessing marijuana, the pop star would face up to 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. Houston's handbag was seized by a security guard at Keahole-Kona International Airport after a routine search on Jan. 11. Police reported the bag contained half an ounce of marijuana. Houston and her husband, singer Bobby Brown, boarded a flight to San Francisco before police arrived. Houston, 37, has won six Grammy awards. Her best-known hit is ``I Will Always Love You.'' [Thanks Lopez] Disney Song For Whitney... Archerd: Julie Andrews will sing no more By Army Archerd, Daily Variety Senior Columnist HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Julie Andrews asked me to tell readers that, despite Variety's review of her Oct. 16 host stint of ``My Favorite Broadway: The Love Songs'' at Gotham's City Center, she did not sing nor will she be able to sing in the future. In the finale of the show (taped for a PBS ``Great Performances''), Michael Crawford sang Lerner & Loewe's ``My Fair Lady'' showstopper ``I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face'' and Andrews voiced, ``The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain.'' Variety reviewer Robert L. Daniels wrote Julie ``then sang the vocal reply -- 'On the plain! On the plain!''' Daniels added, ``By George she's got it! Andrews will sing again!'' He said her ``comeback'' resulted in ``a cheering audience rising to its feet.'' But Tuesday in L.A., on the set of Disney's feature ``The Princess Diaries,'' Julie said, ``Everybody feels that when I hit a bass note or two that I'm singing. But I couldn't actually sing. That night I 'sang' like Rex Harrison sings! Maybe someday I might be able to sing a whole bass song -- like 'Old Man River,''' she laughed. Coincidentally, Garry Marshall, directing ``Diaries,'' said ``Julie is playing Rex Harrison'' in this movie. Her character, Queen Clarisse Renaldi of Genovia, tutors her reluctant granddaughter (played by Anne Hathaway) in the art of being a princess; the San Francisco teenager is heir to the Genovia throne. The location was Mount St. Mary's College, its magnificent grounds and buildings in downtown L.A., on Figueroa and Adams. These well-camouflaged buildings -- the former luxurious Doheny mansion and gardens -- now house the college, but will double in the film as the Genovian Consulate. It includes a marble-columned ballroom that easily fit the setting for the picture's regal doings. The film will be released in July by Disney; Marshall is sure it will be G-rated: ``It's my penance for having done a movie about a hooker ('Pretty Woman') for Disney. It's for teenagers, parents and grandparents; I have two grandchildren.'' He said his Falcon Theater is also designed to bring young people into loving live theater. His daughter, Kathleen Marshall, has an important role in this film as well. Andrews told me it's a joy working with/for Marshall: ``He allows us such freedom.'' The dialogue is not saccharine; young princess Hathaway, told she might someday have to observe proper protocol in Iraq, says, ``Iraq? Where women are second-class citizens? Don't bet the farm on it.'' The multi-talented Hathaway ``is a combination Julia Roberts, Audrey Hepburn and Judy Garland,'' said Marshall. She's an accomplished singer but will not sing in this film -- nor will Julie, as per the above. But Whitney Houston, a producer of the film with Debra Martin Chase and Mario Iscovich, may get an OK from Arista to record one of the movie's tunes on this Disney label. (Whitney appears at the Aladdin in Vegas, Nov. 10). Earlier this week, Julie and Hector Elizondo (he's in all Marshall pix) danced to a tango-bolero, ``Another Life,'' written by the pic's Sidney James. It had the company cheering! The ``music'' that is not welcome on the set is the constant interruption by planes: The location is on the flight path to LAX. Marshall presented the cast with ``trophies'' for performances despite the planes. Added music is the nearby church chimes, regularly and loudly taking over the air waves. ``We don't need music!'' Marshall bellowed back at a lengthy 12 noon serenade! Andrews looks -- mahvelous! For this scene she wore a trim business-like suit but Oscar-nominated designer Gary Jones has some ballgowns which will fit her regal role. One, in peach satin, ``is an homage to Dior.'' Another, a beaded silk for a state dinner, is ``Eliza Doolittle quality,'' he says. While the song is sadly ended for Julie, she is busy working on a Broadway return, plus several TV projects including CBS' ``On Golden Pond'' remake. And Julie continues her busy children's book-writing career with daughter Emma Walton on the ``Dumpy'' books, illustrated by Tony Walton, Emma's dad (Julie's first husband). Andrews' husband, Blake Edwards, is also busy preparing several projects including a musicalized ``Pink Panther'' for Broadway, with Leslie Bricusse teaming. Blake also met with longtime producer partner Walter Mirisch on a remake of ``The Party'' ``It's to raise awareness, not funds,'' Kevin Spacey reminded as he hosted/produced Tuesday night's ``Celebrating Our Future, Remembering Our Past'' gala at the home of Kate Edelman Johnson. As noted here Sept. 13, the evening was to benefit the Motion Picture & TV Fund by enlisting the younger generation of Hollywood to follow the example set by the fund's founders. Guests and participants included Gregory Peck, Jack Lemmon, Helen Hunt, Danny DeVito, George Clooney and foundation board chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg; and those participating Tuesday and now committed to continue the fund's support were: Haley Joel Osment, Spike Jonze, Rose McGowan, David Arquette, Rachael Leigh Cook, Paul Thomas Anderson, Jenna Elfman, Noah Wyle, Leelee Sobieski, Vince Vaughn, Amanda Peet, Stephen Dorff, Freddie Prinze Jr., David Arquette, etc. Spacey's office had been ``an editing bay'' for weeks readying footage of industry residents at the MPTV Country House & Hospital to show last night: Stanley Kramer, Billie Dove, Hal Riddle, John Chambers, Madlyn Rhue, John Anderson, Robert Cornthwaite and Jan Sterling. Take a bow, Kevin. Join him, Hollywood. Reuters/Variety REUTERS

Here's Aladdin Hotel's Press Release About The Show: WHITNEY HOUSTON AND BOBBY BROWN UNITE ONSTAGE FOR EXCLUSIVE CONCERT APPEARANCE AT ALADDIN Los Angeles, CA - Whitney Houston, one of the most successful recording artists of all time, will join musical forces with her husband, Bobby Brown, multi platinum solo artist and former leader of New Edition, for a night of pop, R&B, and hip hop at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts. This special concert, featuring individual performances by each artist as well as several duets, will take place on Friday, November 10th at 8 PM. Tickets for the performance are priced at $300, $200, and $100. A six time Grammy winner and Soul Train's Female Artist of the Decade, Houston is known not only for her electrifying live performances, but also for her stellar record and video sales which exceeds 110 million worldwide, making her the biggest selling artist of all time. Newsweek wrote "no one of her generation sings with more character and conviction," and Jon Pareles of New York Times dubbed her performance at last year's VH1 Divas as "invincible." Houston, who received a standing ovation at last month's MTV Video Music Awards, commemorated her 15th year of recording in May with a 2 CD greatest hits package featuring a unique mix of classic ballads like "The Greatest Love of All," and "One Moment in Time," with up tempo signature cuts and remixes, (including "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "I'm Every Woman," and "How Will I Know,") New duets with Deborah Cox, George Michael and Enrique Iglesias round out the 36 track set which has already sold over 5 million copies worldwide. Houston's career contains a substantial list of achievements. Her debut album, Whitney Houston, released in 1985, became the biggest selling debut by a solo artist. By the time her follow-up album, Whitney, was released, she had garnered seven consecutive number one hits, surpassing a record previously set by the Beatles and the Bee Gees. A series of soundtrack albums - including Waiting to Exhale and The Preachers Wife added to her multi-platinum collection. But, it was "The Bodyguard" that shattered records. In addition to making Houston's acting debut, the film featured "I Will Always Love You," the biggest selling commercial single in history. To date, the album has sold 36 million copies worldwide. In 1999, Whitney released her critically acclaimed studio album, "My Love is Your Love." This record earned her a sixth Grammy and yielded several hit singles including "It's Not Right, But It's Okay," "Heartbreak Hotel," and "When You Believe," a duet with Mariah Carey. Four years before Houston's recording debut, Bobby Brown formed New Edition in his native Roxbury, Massachusetts. Within two years, the group was releasing gold and platinum records like, "Cool It Now," "Count Me Out," and "Mr. Telephone Man." His breakthrough 1988 solo LP Don't Be Cruel generated 4 top 5 singles - "Don't Be Cruel," "Roni," "My Prerogative," and "Every Little Step," which earned Brown a Grammy Award. American Music Awards and Soul Train Music Awards followed as Brown followed up with the multi platinum Bobby. He reunited with New Edition in 1997 for the Home Again tour. His next release, Forever, was a seamless blend of hip hop and rhythm an blues. Brown is currently at work on a new album, soon to be released. Tickets for Houston's and Brown's performance go on sale Saturday, October 14 at 10 AM at all Ticketmaster outlets and the Aladdin Theatre Box Office. To order by phone call (702) 474-4000 or visit www.ticketmaster.com Aladdin's newly rebuilt Theatre for the Performing features 7,000 cloth seats along with the city's best sound and sightlines. Screen capture from the 'Fine' video (courtesy of Lisa D.) with aired on BET's 106th & Park yesterday with a surprise appearance from Whitney herself. Whitney came to plug the video and her album as well as Sunday's new CD. She was at ease and friendly. The co-hosts got hugs from her and they gave her lots of accolades. The host, 'Free', stated that she knows that Whitney is very meticulous with how her songs are queued up on the CD and what goes next etc. She said that she had the opportunity to see Whit in the studio with Wyclef and Whitney sung a song four different ways each time then she saw her perform it and it was still different. She was amazed and wanted to know how Whitney does it. Whitney said that the melody stays in her head but her feelings varies and that is how she does it. The host then said 'well, your band have to be on point to follow you' to which Whitney jokingly said 'they would WANT to be'. Bobby Brown was also with Whitney as was Robyn Crawford (who co-manages Sunday with Whitney). Whitney made some oblique references to her legal problems in noting that she noted that she and Bobby have a lot going on and she pointedly noted that she feels good. [Review of 'Fine' from www.wbls.com] Whitney Houston has been working some serious magic lately because she's blazin us with back to back hits. Not that this diva needs magic to create a smash, but she definitely got her own recipe brewing. Her new single "Fine" which is off her Greatest Hits CD is real hot. She sings to a former lover telling him that she's over him and is doing just fine. Ladies, I smell another anthem. [Thanks Jeffrey]
