Judge Bars Fan From Contacting Whitney Houston MORRISTOWN, N.J. (Reuters) - A judge reinstated an order on Tuesday temporarily barring a woman from contacting singer Whitney Houston after the fan repeatedly sent letters, cards and gifts to the pop star who she believes is her "supernatural reincarnated mother." New Jersey Superior Court Judge Kenneth MacKenzie issued the order in Morris County court against Desiree Weeks, 33, who has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital in New York. Houston is also seeking a permanent restraining order against Weeks and a hearing was scheduled for March 27. Since August 1999, Weeks has sent the Grammy Award-winning singer numerous letters, greeting cards and gifts including Valentine's Day chocolates and a four-tiered cake. In December 1999 she mailed Houston a bra and underwear, pajamas for her husband Bobby Brown and pillows for her daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, according to court papers. The items showed that Weeks believed Houston was her "supernatural reincarnated mother" and in letters Weeks called her "mommy" and wrote "you are my world." Weeks also referred to Houston's 7-year-old daughter as her "sister." Houston, who has an estate in Mendham, N.J., had a previous restraint on Weeks lifted in June, believing she was locked up securely. The singer filed for the reinstatement because Weeks escaped from the hospital on Jan. 26 for 11 hours. "You hear stories of people stalking celebrities and you never know if they're realistic threats or not," Houston's attorney Brian Blaney told reporters. No physical harm has been done to Houston or her family but the order bars Weeks from having any contact personally, through correspondence, by phone or with her management company, Nippy Inc. of Fort Lee, New Jersey. Weeks sent letters and gifts to the company and was spotted on the grounds of Houston's estate. [Thanks Lopez]

[Associated Press Report] Houston drug case hearing postponed HILO, Hawaii (AP) - A hearing in the drug case against singer Whitney Houston has been postponed a week. The hearing, which had been scheduled for next Friday, is now scheduled for March 8. Prosecutors are asking a judge to set aside a plea agreement on a misdemeanor drug charge. They said Houston failed to submit a substance-abuse assessment as required by the agreement. Houston's bag, which allegedly contained less than half an ounce of marijuana and three partially smoked marijuana cigarettes, was seized at the Keahole Kona International Airport in January 2000. Houston was not arrested. Prosecutors say she abandoned the bag and boarded a flight to San Francisco with her husband, singer Bobby Brown, before police arrived. Houston entered a no contest plea in the case last November and was ordered to pay $4,025. Judge Joseph Florendo Jr. agreed to dismiss the conviction if Houston stayed out of trouble. Pot Parley By Whitney and Hawaii Whitney Houston might be getting another chance. Last week, Aloha Stae prosecutors asked that a plea agreement in a pot case against Houston be thrown out, claiming the star failed to meet with a certified counselor for a drug assessment test by Feb. 1. Now, Houston's legal counsel is trying to smooth things over." Her lawyers are in the process of setting up a conference call with our office to discuss the matter further," deputy prosecutor Mel Fujino tells us. Houston, who was facing a maximum of 30 days in jail, pleaded no contest to a misdeamenor marijuana charge stemming from her January 2000 run-in with officials at Keahole-Kona International Airport. [Newark Star Ledger Report; 6 February 2000] By Greg Saitz, Star-Ledger StaffPop singer Whitney Houston is asking a Morris County judge to reinstate a restraining order against a Bronx psychiatric patient who believes Houston is her mother, after the woman escaped from her escorts two weeks ago. Superior Court Judge Kenneth Mackenzie, sitting in Morristown, signed an order yesterday setting a hearing for Feb. 27 to address the issue of Desiree Weeks, who fled while at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx on Jan. 26. Police captured Weeks about 11 hours later at her sister's house in the Bronx. The incident caused enough concern that Houston, a Mendham Township resident, asked the judge to reinstate her lawsuit against Weeks and issue a temporary restraining order similar to one he signed last March. Weeks believes Houston is the "supernatural reincarnation" of her mother and has sent cards, gifts and a four-tiered cake to the multi-Grammy award winner. Houston's attorney, Thomas Weisnenbeck, filed court papers stating that Weeks is being held involuntarily at the Bronx Psychiatric Center and has refused treatment for her illness. Weeks suffers from psychosis and continues to be obsessive and delusional, the papers said, "insisting that Whitney Houston is her mother and that she be addressed as 'King Michael Houston' or 'King Houston.'" Weeks was at St. Barnabas Hospital for undisclosed reasons when she ran away from two mental hygiene therapy aides escorting her from the psychiatric center, said Roger Klingman, a spokesman for the New York Office of Mental Health. "She did not simply walk away," Klingman said. "She bolted." The mental health agency is conducting an investigation, he said, noting there were 16 unauthorized absences from the 374-patient psychiatric center last year. He declined to release further information about Weeks, who is believed to be in her early 30's, citing patient confidentiality. New York City Police alerted Houston's representatives of the escape after a member of Weeks' family told detectives about the previous restraining order. Alan Jacobs, who is in charge of security for Nippy Inc., a management company in Fort Lee that oversees Houston's career, flew up from North Carolina upon learning of Weeks' status to conduct his own investigation, court papers said. Houston's publicist released a statement yesterday saying no extra precautions were taken during the time Weeks was free. "Life went on as usual," the statement said. The judge issued a temporary restraining order March 2, 2000, after hearing about rambling letters Weeks began sending to Houston in August 1999, which were followed by Christmas gifts, Valentine's Day chocolates and the cake, all sent to Nippy offices. The order against contact also included Houston's young daughter, Bobbi Kristina Brown, and her mother, Emily "Cissy" Houston, who Weeks referred to in letters as her baby sister and "Nana." Weisenbeck said yesterday that Houston voluntarily withdrew her lawsuit in June because "we thought that she (Weeks) was secure." "What we need to have is a permanent restraint against her that sets reasonable restrictions on any contact she might attempt to have with our clients," he said.

[First Hand Report From Leigh W] Vancouver AC radio had a one hour special with Lionel Richie debuting his new album, 'Renaissance' yesterday. Lionel had a lot to say about Whitney. On the subject of today's music, Lionel was asked who his favorite singer was today. Without missing a heartbeat he said "..Oh, Whitney Houston, without a doubt.." The interview asked Lionel "Why Whitney, why not Celine Dion..?"Lionel replied [paraphrased] "...Celine is Celine, she is a great singer, no doubt about it, but musical relevancy and artistry belongs only to Whitney Houston. Whitney is much bigger than we think she is. Unfortunately, the music world will not appreciate her talents until, heaven forbid, she should pass!" Interviewer: Elaborate please! Lionel: Whitney is an all around entertainer. Her voice is the best in the business. And I know many in the real music world who will contend that she is the best in 30 years. But again, we don't want to step on any egos. When I first worked with Whitney on the Preacher's Wife, I was amazed at her ability to sing gracefully, technically and emotionally. Do you know how many times that girl sang 'I Believe In You And Me'? Over ten times, in the final mix, they combined 3 of the 10 performances which was totally unnecessary. When I played that piano, trying my best to concentrate on the actual playing was a very difficult task. Whitney's voice is a gift from God, she is music without end. I wrote several songs for an upcoming album of hers and we will do our duet together someday. Interviewer: With that in mind, what is your opinion of her current troubles? Lionel: What troubles? I've only read and heard what other people have said about Whitney. I saw Whitney a few months ago at the height of the madness, and she was fine. There was nothing that indicated drug use. I refuse to believe it! When you reach certain heights, they attack you. I've been there, first your own attack you, and then the sharks feed on what's left over. Michael, Diana, Aretha, all the greats have been through this type of attack. Whitney is in a class of her own and her talent scares a great deal of people in the industry. No one can and will ever sing like Whitney Houston. Interviewer: What do you think of the young crop of singers? Lionel: They're okay. This Monica girl is gifted and I've heard Christina, perhaps a bit too much. Kelly, Celine, there are many but unfortunately the music industry is lacking in really good music today. We need a person like Whitney Houston to bring back the big sweeping ballads and the real dance ditties that all of us have grown up with. I'm itching to come back but I tell Whitney that until she goes full swing, the state of radio will be in a flux. Plus, I need me a big hit(!) Interviewer: Your admiration for Whitney's work is incredible. Who are you working with now? Lionel: My lips are sealed but I love to talk about her, don't I. (Laughter) Interviewer: What is your favorite Lionel Richie song? Lionel: All of them. [Thanks Leigh]
