THE EUROPEAN TOUR 1998
REVIEW
Review By Barbara B. (Verona, Italy, 29 June 1998)
Hi Manish, or rather ciao, as I'm Italian and most
Italians don't usually speak a very fluent English, but nobody obviously informed Whitney
about that...
She arrived at our beautiful Arena one hour and a half late. People were really pissed
off...when she eventually came out she didn't even apologise and one boy called her a slut
in Italian, but she smiled and thanked !!! Then she started singing but most songs were
absolutely unrecognisable... her voice was really bad and the chorus girls did a very good
job supporting her.
Then, she started chatting, IN ENGLISH !!!! For ten minutes at least she spoke in English
(American) and most people didn't understand a word, she really pissed people off for the
second time. We are Italians and one cannot patronise us that way for 10 minutes, few
words are Ok, but that was really irritating, even for me cause I understood her, but I
had to translate to my friends all the time.... Sorry, but Whitney, that's NOT the way to
go... Plus, she didn't sing "All At Once" or "The Greatest Love Of
All", songs that made her famous in this country. And then she introduced her
daughter, who was there, and her mother, who was on holiday and of course her very nice
and talented brother...who was much better than her I'm afraid.
Then she introduced the band, one by one, to tell the truth, she didn't have much voice
that night and she tried to waste as much time as she could...
When she sang those Diana Ross' songs, I'd say three quarters of the people didn't know
what she was doing at all. I mean, we really didn't have a clue what she was singing !!!
Who's Diana Ross in Italy ??? And after only one hour she sang her last song, "I Will
Always Love You", which was really excellent and then disappeared in all
hurry.
She came back only for "Step by Step", the problem is that that movie "The
Preacher's Wife" wasn't released in Italy, so nobody really knew the song, or could
relate to it. Plus she sucked royally while singing it !!!
I think she was a bit drunk when she came on stage, she admitted being late because she
had had too much to drink, but people here paid lots of money to see a professional singer
singing and she was late, drunk, patronising and not too talented !
I'm sorry, she lost soo much, EVERYBODY was complaining at the end of the show. Everybody
missed that sweet professional Whitney of the beginning. The Whitney we saw tonight was
just a shadow of a glorious past... yes, the past was glorious, but we only saw a
shadow.....
