San Francisco Demands...

[Article From Dotmusic's Whitney Houston Section]

San Francisco officials have asked Whitney Houston to reimburse the city $100,000 they spent preparing for a concert she cancelled 15 minutes before show time.

Whitney says she cancelled the August 1 concert because she was ill. The concert was to be held at the city-owned Concord Pavilion and 5,000 fans were already in their seats when the announcement was made and thousands were turned away outside the venue.

Officials said around 8,500 tickets out of a possible 12,500 had been sold and the Pavilion's booking agent said Whitney's representatives were looking into the matter. Whitney cancelled four earlier dates on her tour because of recurring throat problems.

Mary...

Mary J. Blige marginally misses taking her second Billboard 200 No.1 album this week with "Mary." At the very end of her liner notes, Mary writes, "Whitney Houston, thank you for being there for me, you are truly special person."

UK Mid Week Chart...

"The mid week UK singles chart predicts a drop for "My Love Is Your Love" to No.28 (from No.16). The song is also making steep declines on radio (this week down from No.6 to No.14) following the deletion of the single.

Arista are leading the way in deleting UK singles - "It's Not Right But It's Okay" was deleted after shipping 500,000 and they also deleted "No Scrubs" by TLC after shipping 550,000 copies. It's likely that "My Love Is Your Love" has been deleted at 500,000 copies.

Whitney Kicks Off European Dates

Whitney Houston plays the first full show of her 31-date European tour tonight in Vechter, Germany. The itinerary runs until Oct. 23 and includes dates in Switzerland, the U.K., France, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Holland, Italy, and Austria. The tour follows Houston's successful run of shows in North America. It also takes place with her current Arista set, "My Love Is Your Love," at No. 1 on Music & Media's European Top 100 Albums chart.

According to the label, the set has sold 3.8 million copies outside the U.S., where it is certified for sales of 2 million. The album is No. 54 this week on The Billboard 200.

As on the U.S. dates, Houston will model a wardrobe created especially for her by Italian designers Dolce & Gabbana. She tells Billboard Online, "I open my show with a blast. I have on this Dolce & Gabbana outfit -- [It's] green and yellow and all the [lights] are flashing [on me] -- and my hair is different and the people are loving it. They love to see that you can reinvent yourself and come back and kick butt."

With the title track from "My Love Is Your Love" still performing well around Europe, Arista will not release the next single from the album, "I Learned From The Best," until the fall.

Elle...

Whitney Houston is featured in the SEPTEMBER issue of ELLE (U.S.A. edition), which has Ashley Judd on the cover. In the article Whitney is #19. 19 of ELLE'S TOP 25 (annual list of top stars this year 99). The picture used for the article, is the version of the picture used for Whitney's 99 Tourbook cover, and the picture used for the cover of "BE" magazine. Here is the complete article (word for word):

''- A STAR IS REBORN She's a diva's diva-even Cher and Tina were afraid to join her on that VH1 stage. And dammit, Whitney Houston's gonna prove it this fall, as she takes on the fashion world (in a splashy Dolce & Gabbana campaign), Europe (on an international tour covering twenty-nine dates in fifteen countries), the music industry (finally, a greatest hits album-but can they possibly fit?), and, most significantly, Hollywood: Miss Houston has been cast against type as "an average young woman on the highway of life" in the big budget romantic comedy ANYTHING FOR YOU. She's also rumored to be stepping into Streisand's shoes, thank you very much, with an over-the-top remake of A STAR IS BORN opposite Mr. Jiggy himself, Will Smith. Babs is apparently none too happy, but Whitney, we will always love you.-J.P.H''

Whitney Houston Fundraiser: MJ No-Show...

[Article From New York Daily News]

Jacko pulls no-show on Whitney.

Let's see if Whitney Houston honors Michael Jackson again. Monday night, Houston was due to present his Gloviliness with something called a New Millennium Visionary Award at a benefit concert here for Houston's Foundation For Children. But even though he was in town, Jackson was a no show. That, according to several guests at the $20,000-a-table fund-raiser, didn't please Houston's hubby, Bobby Brown. "Bobby was visible upset,' one guest tells us. he was saying things like, "Who the hell does he think he is?"

Another guest said she was told by an organizer that Jackson was scared off by photographers who found out about the party, which was held at the W. 67th St. penthouse of record exec. David Guest.

The King of Pop, whose rep didn't return phone calls, has been busy laying down tracks for his next album. Whatever his reasons, Houston's rep Nancy Seltzer, insists that the singer and her husband aren't mad at him.

"Whitney and Bobby were disappointed and sad that he could not be there," says Seltzer. "They were not angry. Whitney was pleased with the event. She focuses on the positive."

Certainly, the evening didn't want want for entertainment. Houston, rested up after missing a recent concert date, showed she's ready to head off on a two-month European tour that begins Sunday in Poland. The diva belted out "I Will Always Love You" and joined Trisha Yearwood and the Four Tops on "I Believe In You And Me."

Also performing were Gloria Gaynor, Monica, Denise Williams and, making her musical debut, "Hart to Hart" star Stephanie Powers, who duetted with Phobe Snow.

Among those on hand were Charles Bronson, Ramsey Lewis, Clive Davis, Jane Powell, Freda Payne and Honorees Diane Warren, Tonja Walker Davidson and Ed Davidson.

All told, Houston's bash raised more than $300,000 for her charity, as well as for the American Cinema Awards Foundation and The Actors Fund of America.

My Love Is Your Love: Deleted UK Single...

"My Love Is Your Love" has been deleted in the UK - a first for a single doing so well on the chart. It's not known how many copies of the single have been shipped before it was deleted.

The Princess Diaries...

Houston Reads Disney 'Diaries' - By Oliver Jones

NEW YORK (Variety) - More than a year after scoring with the ABC version of ``Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella,'' Whitney Houston is back in the princess business.

Disney has optioned novelist Meg Cabot's book ``The Princess Diaries'' for the pop singer's production company Brownhouse Prods. to develop into a family-oriented feature film.

Scheduled to be published in hardback by Avon's young adult line this coming June, ``Princess'' is said to read like a hip, urban version of ``Eloise.'' It tells the story of feisty and rebellious 16-year-old Mia, who discovers much to her dismay that she is in fact the princess of a small European country. As a result, Mia must suffer though the indignity of ``princess lessons'' at the hands of her stern grandmother.

The picture is on the fast track at Disney, with the manuscript out to screenwriters. Houston will serve as a producer. Disney paid a mid- to low-six figure sum for the rights.

Brownhouse's upcoming feature productions include ``Get Christy Love'' and ``Anything for You'' at Universal and ''Thirty Years to Life'' at Fox.

Upscale...

Whitney is featured in the August issue of Upscale Magazine (Halle Berry cover). It it Upscale's 10th anniversary issue. The first article is Upscale's "10 Most Memorable Covers". 2 covers featuring Whitney made their list, the "Waiting To Exhale" cover (November 1995), and the Whitney and Bobby cover (February 1998).

The next article that features Whitney is Upscale's "10 Most Recognizable Faces". The article is very complimentary and mentions aspects about Whitney not mentioned often in other articles. For example: "An astute businesswoman, she (Whitney) has amassed an impressive fortune that keeps her name on the Forbes Top Money Entertainers List, and an $11 million dollar New Jersey mansion is one of the many trappings of success". The article continues to talk about her global sales success, the success of each of her albums, her success as a singer, model, actress, and producer, as well as her charitable contributions. The article futher mentions future Whitney projects, including the "Anything For You" movie project, and her ownership to the rights of such books as the Dorothy Dandridge biography, and others like "How To Marry A Black Man" and "Friends And Lovers" - all ! of which may become film projects at some point in the future. Her new label "Better Place Records" was also mentioned. All in all an excellent article. They used the My Love Is Your Love album cover for the picture on the article.

Finally, Whitney is mentioned again in the feature interview with Halle Berry. Halle on Whitney: "Whitney had the rights to "Dorothy Dandridge (a biography by Donald Bogle), and I had the rights to her (DD) manager's book (Earl Mills). The truth is no matter what book any of us had, her life is public domain. All that happened was that I got to the finish line first. Hopefully Whitney will still do a story. I would love to see her play Dorothy or get someone else to. I would love to see what her vision is or what she thought of her and Janet (her version) too. They may do it, they may not."

She has also had multiple Grammy, Golden Globe and Oscar nominations. Recently, Warren won a TNN/Music City News award (this award is unique in that it is based solely on fan votes -- not music peers) for her song "Just To Hear You Say That You Love Me," performed by Faith Hill and Tim McGraw.

Warren is a former recipient of the International Achievement in Arts Award (the sister organization of the American Cinema Awards Foundation) for "Distinguished Achievement in Songwriting."

Whitney Houston Plans To Sell PepsiCo Shares...

WASHINGTON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Pop singer Whitney Houston, whose mega-hits include "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and "I Will Always Love You," plans to sell shares in PepsiCo Inc. the No. 2 soft drink maker whose items include Pepsi, Diet Pepsi and Mountain Dew, a regulatory filing on Wednesday said.

Houston intends to sell 43,167 shares valued at more than $1.7 million, a filing her company, Whitney Houston Investments Inc., located in Fort Lee, N.J., made with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Houston was paid in PepsiCo shares as part of an agreement she had with Pepsi-Cola "under which she was available to assist in certain programs that were aimed at the African American community," said PepsiCo spokesman Richard Detwiler, who did not know how many shares she received.

Donna Houston, her relative and spokeswoman, did not immediately return a telephone call seeking comment.

PepsiCo, based in Purchase, N.Y., currently has more than 1.4 billion shares outstanding. Its stock price closed down $0.125 to $38-3/16 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Houston, the singer-actress whose mother is the acclaimed gospel singer Cissy Houston, has sold millions and millions of albums, whose titles include "Whitney," "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and the soundtrack to the movie "The Bodyguard," in which she co-starred with actor Kevin Costner.

CONCORD, Calif. (AP) - Citing illness, Whitney Houston canceled a concert in the San Francisco Bay area an hour before she was to perform on the last scheduled stop on the U.S. leg of her world tour.

Most of the audience had already arrived for Sunday's show, said Michael McNally, the house manager at Concord Pavilion. Lance Walden, a spokesman for Ms. Houston's label, Arista, said he didn't know the nature of her illness. Her management company, Nippy Inc., said it couldn't provide information on the cancellation until Tuesday.

Ms. Houston also canceled or postponed shows in Tennessee, Missouri, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. on the tour. The show in Concord will not be rescheduled. Ticket-holders will receive full refunds, McNally said.

Whitney Houston wears Dolce and Gabbana when she belts it out soulfully during her concert gigs (her Los Angeles stints last week were sensational and star-studded). But few recognized the bejeaned, T-shirted and casually capped woman who sat down at the piano at the Beverly Hills Hotel Polo Lounge and played delicate classical music. It was the divine Whitney. Who knew?

Disney's Angel...

R&B thrush Monica is set to star as an aspiring singer in ``Angel of Mine,'' an ABC ``Wonderful World of Disney'' TV movie to be produced by Whitney Houston. The musical project, still in the early stages of development, is based on the 1992 novel ``Strut'' by Bruce and Carole Hart. The working title, ``Angel of Mine,'' also refers to Monica's recent pop hit of the same name.

Monica will play a 17-year-old high school girl whose dreams of stardom are aided by a rock star-cum-guardian angel who died young at the peak of his fame in the 1970s. The rocker believes his mission is to help the girl realize her dream, but in fact, the real purpose is for him to fall in love and thereby earn his backstage pass into heaven. Debra Martin Chase, Houston's producing partner at Brownhouse Prods., described the picture as ``uplifting and fun.'' Brownhouse plans to hold an open casting call for the role of the rocker.

The project is the first TV effort from Brownhouse since 1997's musical ``Cinderella,'' also for the ``Wonderful World of Disney'' showcase. Chase said the company is developing a range of other made-for-TV projects.

James Masterton...

[James Masterton complies the chart commentary for the Dotmusic Website - Here's what he has to say about "My Love Is Your Love" this week]

Although the single is on its way down, Whitney's current hit single is worthy of a small comment this week. My Love Is Your Love has now spent six weeks inside the Top 10 which means that with the minimum of fuss it has become her most enduring hit single since I Will Always Love You spent ten weeks at the top of the pile in 1992. Indeed it is just one of a number of singles inside the Top 10 this week which are enjoying protracted runs of success. Will Smith's Wild Wild West is now five weeks old and it too has spent its entire chart career in the Top 10 (his best run since Men In Black) whilst the Vengaboys' Boom Boom Boom Boom beats them all with a seventh week in the upper reaches. Only one single this year has had a longer Top 10 run - Shania Twain's That Don't Impress Me Much which recently came to the end of an epic 10 week stay.

UK Chart Update...

"My Love Is Your Love" is down to No.5 (from No.4) on the UK Albums Chart - it's 37th charting week. Meanwhile, the single, "My Love Is Your Love" is down 2 places to No.8 on the Singles Chart, its sixth charting week. The single has sales of around 370,000 copies now.

'Whitney Houston' Certified At 13 Million...

The 1985 debut "Whitney Houston" has been certified by the RIAA for US sales of thirteen million copies in the US. The album's global sales figure stands at a tall 23 Million copies worldwide.

This new certification brings Whitney's US Platinum certification figure to an impressive 47 million (sales of 'Whitney Houston', 'Whitney', 'I'm Your Baby Tonight', 'The Bodyguard', 'The Preacher's Wife' and 'My Love Is Your Love' figure). Thus, Whitney's 47 Million albums in the US out performs Madonna's 46 Million*, Mariah Carey's 46 Million**, Celine Dion's 28 Million and Janet's 22 Million albums shipped. The only female artist who ranks above Whitney's 47 Million is Barbra Streisand who's figure stands tall at 51 Million albums** shipped (and certified).

* - Madonna's "Evita" project was re-certified as a double album which means that 2.5 million copies that were shipped represent a five-times Platinum album, not five million sales. Madonna's US Platinum Certification stands at 49 Million.

** Maybe someone can clarify but I believe that Mariah's "MTV Unplugged" was certified three times platinum but it's playing time deems it an EP not an album and thus 500,000 copies represents platinum status for the album. I am also not clear on how many of Barbra Streisand's albums were certified in multiples of two for each million sold due to being double albums - if anyone can clarify, please Mail me.

Excellent European Progress...

Big News - "My Love Is Your Love" is up to No.2 on the European Albums Chart (from No.5 last week). 173...

This is really interesting - The following article appears in this week's Music Week Magazine (the UK equivalent of Billboard):

Only 173 sales separate Whitney Houston's "My Love Is Your Love" [album] from a top three place this week, and a mere 18 sales are all that keep it from fourth place - either of which would represent the top posting of it's 34 week career. In the end, a 13% increase in week-on-week sales do nothing but maintain its number five placing. It has, however, now topped the 350,000 sales mark, while the title track has sold upward of 240,000 copies in just three weeks as a single. It looks like being another long-running and big-selling single for Houston, hot on the heels of "It's Not Right But It's Okay" which has sold more than 482,000 copies to date. The first single from the album - the "When You Believe" duet with Mariah Carey - has sold a comparatively modest 215,000 copies.

UK Radio Update...

"My Love Is Your Love" continues to make gains on UK Radio as it holds at No.5 for a second week with an audience of 62 million - an increase of 14% over last week.

Billboard...

"My Love Is Your Love" holds at No.69 on the Billboard 200 for a second week.

On the singles front, "It's Not Right But It's Okay" holds at No.7 on the Hot100 as it's airplay regains it's bullet to climb to No.13 and slips to No.7 in Sales. The song is down to No.10 on the R&B Singles Chart.

A Full Rundown Soon.

Billboard Review...

[The Billboard Magazine Review Of "My Love Is Your Love"]

It's taken a hot second for the public to dig into Houston's current collection, ``My Love Is Your Love,'' and it's arguable that folks might've come to the party earlier if they'd been served the the set's sublime title jam as a single sooner. Houston cruises through the tune (which bears the unmistakable signature of co-producer/co-writer Wyclef Jean) with a soulful ease that perfectly suits the languid, reggae-kissed hip-hop groove. Programmers and listeners alike will love the sing-along chorus, which builds from an intimate promise of romantic commitment to an anthemic, choir-fueled declaration of one-world/one-love. Truly inspiring. By the way, listen closely to hear Houston's daughter, Bobbie Kristina, playfully whisper ``sing Mommy'' during the first few bars of the tune. Too cute for words.

Whitney Houston has recovered from the throat problem that caused her to recently scratch concerts in Newark and Washington. The diva, who played Boston on Thursday, is on to play Madison Square Garden on Wednesday and Thursday. Jonathan Peters' dance remix of her new single "My Love Is Your Love" just hit stores.

The curious mention of the Johnathan Peter's remix of "My Love Is Your Love" may be referring to a promo?

After throat problems plagued Whitney Houston over the 4th of July weekend, the singer returned to the stage in Boston Wednesday night. Houston missed two performances in Newark, New Jersey and Washington, D.C. over the weekend and spoke about her throat troubles with MTV News before taking the stage Wednesday.
"I'm fine thank God," Houston told MTV News. "I got that singer's thing where cords get so swollen and they won't take a break. I was beating it out, kind of like, back-to-back kind of things, you know. So I just took four, three, four days [off]." [RealVideo]

MTV Report...

Whitney Houston Surprises Crowd At Gay-Lesbian Pride Event

Whitney Houston flew in for a special surprise guest appearance at the 13th Annual New York City Lesbian and Gay Pride Dance, which took place Sunday night on Manhattan's west side. Dressed in bejeweled trousers and a dark, sheer top, Whitney appeared onstage toward the end of the evening and performed her two most recent hits, "It's Not Right, But It's Okay" and "Heartbreak Hotel," which had the crowd of 7000 singing along.
MTV News' John Norris caught up with Houston when she arrived at the gig (fresh off a flight from Detroit) and asked why she decided to take time out from her tour to support the gay and lesbian community. "They asked me to come by and sing a few songs, and I said, 'Okay,'" Houston explained. The event, officially known as "Dance 13: The Last Dance of the Century," wrapped up the city's Lesbian and Gay Pride Week. After wowing the crowd, it's back to the road for Whitney. She'll be playing Toronto on Tuesday night before returning to New York for two dates at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.

Billboard Dance Trax...

[Text from Billboard's Dance Trax section]

Okay we admit: We're still reeling from WH surprise performance June 27 at Heritage of Pride's 13th annual Lesbian & Gay Pride's Dance on the pier in N.Y. Houston capped a 7 hour event that included performances by Norma Lewis, Kim English, and Erin Hamilton, a crossover star just waiting to happen! Sashaying onto the stage, Arista's Houston, with the widest of smiles, told the 7,000 punter's that it felt great "to be here". After much thunderous applause, Houston let loose with the only dance versions of "HH" and the indefatigable "INRBIO". Now, if ya think about it, this was a major coup not only for the the lesbian and gay community but for the club community as well. Both communities have ferociously embraced the singer since her emergence in the mid-80's. And, well, it's never too late to show one's respect and say "thanks" to an audience that has been there every step of the way. And thankfully, nothing about Houston's appearance seemed contrived; it appeared completely genuine.. Perhaps Houston's appearance will encourage other artist to make similar moves and acknowledge those who acknowledge them."
