'Could I Have This Kiss Forever' and 'Same Script, Different Cast' will continue to be worked on US radio as long as possible with a planned push behind the album, 'Whitney The Greatest Hits' coming close behind. A final decision has not been made on the commercial release of 'Same Script, Different Cast' and it is now likely that a video for the song will not happen. The song has been remixed and these mixes will help promote Whitney's club profile. Consideration is now being given to recording a video for 'Fine' next rather than 'Same Script, Different Cast'. That song will not be issued to US radio until after 'If I Told You That'. The finer details of this information are being worked on and Arista are looking to work the profile of the songs to the maximum benefit of the Greatest Hits collection, hence the decisions to withhold commercial singles.

Whitney Houston is cited as one of the 100 Most Influential People, Places and Things according to Vibe Magazine. In their blurb about Whitney, their commentary appears to want to focus on 2000 for Whitney rather than why they chose Whitney as one of the most influential people: Whitney Houston Arista's signature diva didn't always make it live but she did make headlines with Whitney the Greatest Hits, her sixth Grammy, and a near airport drug bust. She nabbed the Soul Train Award for Artist of the Decade-Female and gave the performance of her life at Arista's 25th Anniversary Special. Some say it's not right, but we say it's okay.[Thanks Quest]
Arts & Life For a generation of rock 'n' rollers, it was the moment they knew they wanted to be stars. "I remember thinking, 'This can be done. I can do that,' " singer Billy Joel said. Elvis Presley's comeback special four years later, his return to radio after years of B movies, was No. 2, and deemed more important than the King's 1956 debut. The 1968 return at least showed those swivelling hips. In 1956, the camera only shot him from the waist up. Several selections were more important in retrospect as historical movements rather than memorable moments, such as the premieres of MTV, Saturday Night Live and American Bandstand. Other moments in VH1's top 10 included Michael Jackson's first moonwalking dance steps on the 1983 Motown 25 special, the Live Aid telecast in 1985, Madonna's Like a Virgin performance on the 1984 MTV Video Music Awards, and the Who's appearance on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967. The most bizarre selection: No. 17, the man who crashed Bob Dylan's 1998 Grammy Awards performance with Soy Bomb written on his bare chest. The most recent: Ricky Martin's performance at
the 1999 Grammy Awards, one of 28 events from the 1990s. The list
also includes three performances of the U.S. national anthem: by Marvin Gaye at the 1982
NBA All-Star Game in Detroit, by Whitney Houston at the 1991 Super Bowl, and by a
crotch-grabbing Roseanne at a 1990 San Diego Padres [Thanks MG] NEWSFILE: 24 JULY 2000 |

The Price Is Right... [Kelly Price's Comment About Whitney Houston In Her Vibe Interview] Kelly Price Talks R&B Kelly Price is currently riding high on the success of her sophomore album, Mirror Mirror, which features the hit singles "Love Sets You Free" and "As We Lay." Kelly recently talked to VIBE Online about working with one of her mentors, Aretha Franklin. "I have written for her," said Price. "I've sung background for her on recordings on a couple of occasions. I'm not satisfied with that though, because for me, it would be best to actually be in the studio and work with her. And it not be a thing of where she's there and I'm not. I met her once at one of Clive Davis' pre-Grammy parties though, but it was very brief." Price also expressed her feelings about working with Whitney Houston with whom she previously recorded with on the hit single, "Heartbreak Hotel." She said, "Working with Whitney was a lot of fun. It was a great experience to carry with me throughout the rest of my career. She gave me a lot of good advice." Kelly transcends love through her music and touches her fans' hearts with Mirror Mirror. However, she claims that making R&B music wasn't her choice. "I don't feel that I chose R&B music," said Price. "I feel that R&B music chose me. It has given me a way to reach a much greater audience with my personal message of love for each other and self loveÉ There really was no concept for Mirror Mirror. I just kind of let what was in me pour out. She added, "I just kind of let what was in me pour out." Kelly may also be hitting a big screen near you soon. "It's very possible that the Dreamgirl movie may be redone again," said Kelly. "If so, I'll be going out for that part just like I did two years ago." Mirror Mirror is currently ranked at # 16 on Soundscan. The next single from the album will be "You Should Have Told Me." [Thanks Arthur M] Atlantic City... Pictures of Whitney Houston performing earlier this month at Caesar's Palace, Atlantic City can be found on the Platinum Club Website. CNN... Whitney The Greatest Hits is down to
No.6 (from No.5) on the CNN Worldbeat Album Chart. [Excerpt From Monica Interview In Ebony] Monica says she relies on her mother, Marilyn Best, whom she calls
her "best friend," childhood buddies and Whitney Houston to handle life's
letdowns. "Whitney has always had issues with rumors," she says. "She
started calling me to let me know she was there. She would ask me, 'Did they spell your
name right?' Then she would say, 'As long as they spell your name right, you're
cool," she laughs. Please keep requesting Whitney - Could I Have This Kiss Forever can be requested on AC and Pop radio stations and Same Script, Different Cast can be requested on the Urban radio stations. Requests for Same Script, Different Cast on pop stations can begin once we know the song has been serviced to them but it certainly doesn't hurt to start creating a small buzz out there about the song.

The Way To Celebrate... Whitney Houston and her family have just returned home from a vacation in Disneyworld (Orlando, Florida) - the time was spent to celebrate Whitney & Bobby's eighth wedding anniversary with a small group of their friends and their children. L.A. Reid & Arista... L.A. Reid Selects Arista VP Team (Billboard - July 29, 2000) By MELINDA NEWMAN LOS ANGELES-With his executive team in place, new Arista president/CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid says his staff's first order of business is to "take care of the records we already have in play-the carry-over from Clive Davis-and make sure those records don't fall through the cracks." On July 17 Reid formally announced his upper-level staff, putting to rest weeks of rumors about who would assist him in helming the re-jiggered label. Reid, co-founder of Arista-distributed LaFace Records, took over the label July 1 from Arista founder Davis, who is expected to announce his new label deal with Arista parent BMG shortly. As part of the deal, LaFace is now a wholly owned BMG label and has been incorporated into Arista, although the logo will still be used for existing LaFace artists. Instead of having one second-in-command, Reid has named three executive VPs, all of whom report directly to him and are based in New York. As was announced July 10, former Palm Entertainment COO Larry Mestel has been named executive VP/GM. In his new position, Mestel will oversee business affairs, international, finance, production, special markets, administration, sales (noncreative), and the West Coast operation. Former Columbia senior VP Jerry Blair has been named executive VP, overseeing non-urban promotion and marketing. Longtime Arista vet Lionel Ridenour retains his title as executive VP of black music, overseeing urban promotion and marketing. Under that ring is a tier of senior VPs, whom Reid says will report directly to him; however, some of them will also have a dotted-line report to an executive VP. Among them are senior VP of promotion Steve Bartels, who was Arista's senior VP of special projects, and former LaFace execs Mark Shimmel, now senior VP of artist relations, and Dorsey James, now senior VP of Arista Ventures. Recruited from BMG corporate's offices are Matt Flott, senior VP of finance and administration, and Steve Gawley, senior VP of business and legal affairs. The presence of Flott and Gawley indicates that Reid will work more closely with BMG Entertainment president/CEO Strauss Zelnick than did his predecessor. "I do intend to work very closely with Strauss," says Reid. "I think he has proven he's a brilliant man, and I welcome the input, but that's not why these guys are here. They weren't placed at Arista. I was doing business with them and took a liking to them." When putting together his staff, Reid says, he sought people "who really wanted to be part of this team. I didn't want to spend my time convincing people they should be here. I wanted people who were passionate about our artists and people who had the killer instinct to win." Reid says he is on the verge of signing some new acts in both the rock and Latin areas-two genres in which he has stressed he would like to see Arista grow (Billboard, May 13). He declined to name the artists. Reid says that he is also reviewing Arista's current artist roster and that he does expect some changes to be made. "I'm going through it pretty extensively," he says. "I'm feeling pretty good about a couple of things that are here. The consolidation with the LaFace acts has strengthened the roster a lot." He declined to address rumors that Davis will take a number of acts such as LFO or Deborah Cox with him to his new BMG-distributed label. "I can't speak about any acts going to Clive. I've [been] very supportive of Clive, and I hope he will be supportive of me." As BMG and Arista had always insisted, superstar artists groomed by Davis, such as Whitney Houston and Carlos Santana, are staying on Arista. He stresses that he is also open to pursuing more joint-venture deals, such as the ones Arista already has with Puff Daddy's Bad Boy label, Matt Serletic's Melisma, and Jim Guerinot's Time Bomb. However, he declined to comment on whether he is pursuing a new joint venture with former Work co-founder Jeff Ayeroff and Outpost co-founder Mark Williams. "The official answer is no comment," he says. Reid says his new staff allows him to run the company but still focus on his A&R strengths. "I didn't come here to manage the business," he says. "I had a conversation with [DreamWorks principal] Lenny Waronker, I ran into him one night, and he said, "Understand something about your job. You're going to think it's to manage the business. Your job is to find stars and make hits.' There are a lot more people who are more capable who can manage the business better than I can. My role is to find stars and make hits." Despite indications that Reid intended to move Arista out of its space at 6 West 57th St. in New York, Reid says that he intends to keep the label where it is for now. "I tell you, I'm not concerned about moving. I'm concerned about winning." [Thanks Lopez]

An industry magazine interview with one of the managers of Media Control (Germany's equivalent of Billboard) asks about the relative failure of Whitney Houston's duet with George Michael, 'If I Told You That', in Germany. His response: There are almost 3 million people in Germany who own the 'My Love Is Your Love' album, millions of people who burned the CD...nobody needs a recycled version of that song...and have you seen that cover? The 15 July 2000 issue of Billboard magazine features a headlining report about concerns in the music industry about unrealistic expectations of artists and their managers to 'front-load' (urging retailers to order more copies of a superstar release than necessary). The report states just six albums in the Soundscan era have scanned over one million units inside a week - Whitney Houston's 'The Bodyguard' (1992), Garth Brooks' 'Double Live' (1998), Backstreet Boys' 'Millennium' (1999), N'Sync's 'No Strings Attached' (2000), Britney Spears' 'Oops! I Did It Again' (2000) and Eminem's 'The Marshal Mathers LP' (2000).
MSNBC's Special Edition re-ran the false New York Post report last night about Whitney's Atlantic City Show. The reporter even claimed she was re-running the story because she "loves Whitney Houston and wants to see her recover". Please feel free to email MSNBC's Special Edition and remind them that the New York Post story was fabricated by Paula Froelich citing the facts that the show was a success, no American Pie, no Star Spangled Banner and certainly no forgotten lyrics. [Thanks Monte] NEWSFILE: 20 JULY 2000 |
The scheduled US single release for 'Could I Have This Kiss Forever' has been shelved for the time being in favour of 'Same Script, Different Cast'. No confirmed word on when a video for 'Same Script, Different Cast' will be filmed and aired and the commercial release date of the single has yet to be set.
UK Chart News... Sales of 'Whitney The Greatest Hits' are now around 400,000 in the UK and the album ranks 10th in the year to date sales, having just been pushed down a place by Eminem's 'The Marshall Mathers LP' which has now scanned over 440,000 copies. Whitney's album sold close to 30,000 copies last week to retain it's No.5 position. The top selling album of the year in the UK for the year to date is Moby's 'Play' set with sales of around 800,000 copies in 2000 so far. The single, 'If I Told You That' saw a unit sales increase last week causing the single to rise one place to No.47. It's the first time since it's release that the single climbs but continues the unusual trend for Whitney's singles in the UK to gain sales at some point in their chart career.
UK Airplay... Apologies for not reporting this information in recent weeks. Airplay for 'If I Told You That' is tailing off rapidly and this week drops from No.20 to No.42 with significant drops in spins and audience. The song's UK airplay chart trajectory has been as follows: 57 - 29 - 26 - 16 - 9 - 8 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 6 - 11 - 20 - 42
Success Story... Here's a great success story in the drive to get the real story of Whitney's Atlantic City shows to the media: Lopez called 92Q in Baltimore to set the record straight. The station had just played 'Same Script, Different Cast' at the time: I spoke to Marva and told her what I was calling about. She was like 'Wow', she put me on hold and came back with the main morning DJ (I'm not sure if it was Mark or Troy). I told them that I was at the concert and told them that that story was completely false and fabricated. They were like 'wow, unbelievable'. When I told them that she looked great and put on a wonderful show, they were like' that's good, we're glad to hear it'. I went into more detail and mentioned that the only cover was Aretha's 'It Hurts Like Hell' from the 'Waiting To Exhale' soundtrack. The DJ said, 'That's a killer song' and I responded, '...Yes it is and [Whitney] tore it up, in fact she sung it at all of her US concert dates...'. If you live in D.C or Baltimore, listen to 92Q, The chat with Lopez was recorded and it may get played over again. An incredible amount of everyone's time has gone into emailing the New York Post and other media outlets that have focused on the fabricated reporting of one individual named Paula Froelich. I know this has taken away some of the focus on the more positive mailing that we do in emailing radio stations and calling up our local stations requesting Whitney's latest hits. Please do take some time to call your local pop/AC radio station and request 'Could I Have This Kiss Forever'. Also call your local urban radio station and request 'Same Script Different Cast'. [The New York Post Bites Back Once Again] IF Whitney Houston sounded so good on July 1 in Atlantic City, why won't her reps send over a tape of the concert? Her flack, Nancy Seltzer, never called us back before we reported how Whitney's voice cracked, and she didn't finish some songs. The next day, when Seltzer's minion called to complain, he offered to send us a concert tape. But no tape arrived. The spin doctors must have decided on Plan B, which was planting a story in the Daily News saying how great Whitney sounded. Yesterday, when we asked Seltzer's office why they didn't send the tape, they said, "We've decided not to." Maybe they listened to it? What the New York Post should have said here - if they told the truth for a change - is that they were offered a copy of the tape and they said they'd come back if they wanted it. More lies. If you don't like being lied to by the New York Post and feel they stop skirting around issues and clutching to new lies, forgetting the last set they told, please don't hesitate to email them. Whitney's fans are still waiting for the New York Post to retract their original report claiming she sang 'Star Spangled Banner' and 'American Pie' amongst other lies, with an apology from 'reporter' Paula Froelich.
UK Teletext service, Planet Sound have retracted their recent report of Whitney's Atlantic City. In an email to Whitney fan, Trevor Pinnock, Planet Sound stated: Dear Trevor Thanks for your letter. It's true that we did quote the New York press reports on Whitney's recent concerts and in retrospect we regret giving airspace to what we now know was an erroneous report. However, we have done our best to correct the impression, screening three letters of rebuttal similar to yours. [Well Done Trevor & Everyone Involved In Mailing Planet Sound]

Bobby Gets Sprung, Whitney Gets Job Done Call it the great escape. Last weekend, Whitney Houston and her bad-boy husband, Bobby Brown, celebrated his release from the Broward County jail in Fort Lauderdale by checking into a secret Florida hotel to get reacquainted before returning to their home in New Jersey on Sunday. But not without a chase. I'm told that when they left, their limo was followed by dozens of cars filled with media and onlookers. They managed to ditch the tail with the help of a police escort. The reunion was a happy note shortly after a week when the singer found herself beset by allegations of drug use plus accusations that she'd messed up on stage during a recent three-day engagement at Caesars Palace in Atlantic City. One published report said she had launched into a rendition of the Don McLean classic "American Pie" after bailing out of "I Will Always Love You" just six words into the megahit. The 36-year-old diva did nothing of the sort, says her camp, who adds that "Whitney doesn't even know the lyrics of 'American Pie.'"And the same report claimed that she launched into a version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" after an attempt at "I Want to Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" went south. Not true, says Rick Gallagher, director of entertainment at the Atlantic City gaming mecca. "I was surprised and disturbed.... These statements were false and fabricated," he says. "We were pleased with the extremely high level of professionalism exhibited by Whitney Houston throughout her stay with us." For the record, Houston finished every song she started at Caesars, including "How Will I Know," "My Love Is Your Love" and "Heartbreak Hotel."
Not long after making up a review of Whitney Houston's 1 July Atlantic City show, New York Post are now getting a bit hot under the collar having been exposed as liars. They write: MEMO to Whitney Houston: knock it off. Call off the bombardment of e-mails defending your performance July 1 in Atlantic City. It doesn't matter how many messages are sent to PAGE SIX disputing how the diva's voice cracked and how she didn't finish some songs, as we reported on July 6. It's clear this is an organized campaign - and we won't be intimidated. Though fans are being urged in chat rooms to "e-mail them [us] again and again," actual concert-goers are posting reviews that jibe with our version of events. "Shame on Whitney for scheduling two shows on consecutive days," wrote AirTranDan of Philadelphia. "And shame on me for spending $200 and having a dreadful time. This will be the last Whitney concert I will go to." Letters to the New York Post have been sent because Whitney's fanbase are tired of the lies, not because of any organised campaign. Why are we still not seeing an apology from Paula Froelich for the lies in her report? The New York Post has a responsibility to report the truth. They also cite 'AirTranDan''s comments - clearly reaching now if they can only come up with someone who hasn't even produced his real first name. Where does he say that he saw Whitney sing 'American Pie' or 'Star Spangled Banner'? Paula Froelich has a lot to answer for and she should be held accountable for her report. If you feel strongly enough about this, please feel free to email the New York Post asking for this to happen. The New York Daily News report by Mitchell Fink clear puts a more accurate spin on Froelich's lies.

[Letter Sent To Dotmusic Editor Andy Strickland] Andy, I had started to write to you with some background on Whitney Houston's relationship with the media and the tabloid media's persistent scavenging for any scrap of information about her that they can distort and re-print. I decided against that. No point - you never really listen because you only want to publish anything scandalous that you can find from tabloids which talk of alien abductions and damaging lies. In September, I wrote to you asking that you to report the fact that Whitney was in the midst of a sold out European tour. At the time, she was due to start the first of four shows at Wembley arena. The tour went on to become the biggest grossing arena tour of Europe in 1999. You decided against reporting that, but have continued to favour your picking up copies of US tabloids such as the National Enquirer, People and completely false newspaper reports. I even mailed in a review of the show which was written quite fairly if youd even have bothered to read it. You have made no effort to find out the truth to any of your stories and attending the Wembley show would at least have given you the first steps to some kind of insight into what kind of a performer Whitney Houston is. You have no idea about who you're writing about. The more damning and salacious, the better as far as you are concerned. On 12 June 2000, I wrote again advising you that Whitney would perform three shows at Caesar's Palace in Atlantic City. The fact that you had invested so much negative webspace to Whitney, I presumed a journalist would finally jump at the chance to see Whitney first hand to assess for themselves just how "out of it" she really was. You didn't return to me with any comment - I knew exactly what that meant. I was enraged, but not surprised to see you had decided to pick up the worst review of Whitney's shows from the New York Post. Indeed, several fans attended that show and confirmed that Paula Froelich's review for the Post was completely fabricated. Whitney did not forget the words to her songs and decided she didn't want to sing them anymore. She did not sing 'Star Spangled Banner' or 'American Pie'.Your method of journalism is an insult to your sister publication, Music Week and a further insult to the many Whitney Houston fans who have time and again corrected the lies you spew in the interest of fair play and in presenting a more balanced take on Whitney Houston's recent media profile. If you were not interested in presenting facts rather than just re-hashing American tabloid stories, you should have saved us all the time and effort communicating with you. Please take this as notice that I will be removing all links to Dotmusic from my Whitney Houston Website - www.classicwhitney.com - and will be asking all Whitney Houston websites to do the same. Further, I am asking all Whitney Houston fans to refrain from posting on your Bulletin Board dedicated to her which you have allowed to be overrun with hateful posts because repeated requests for you to install a moderator as you have done with some of your other forums have fallen onto deaf ears. I have forged alliances with webmasters of many different artists over time and I will also be approaching them to remove all traces of dotmusic from their websites. You don't deserve the profile. I don't expect you to have the courage to address the way you have handled your reporting of Whitney Houston as your latest published response to fan's calls for you to correct your story was an insult to the fan's intelligence. You even had the nerve to claim you will present both sides of a story despite your report being riddled with hearsay and inaccuracies, not forgetting the patronising tone taken in the whole report. I believe you even use the word 'ungraciously' - you're team has hardly been the embodiment of grace. What exactly would you know about it? This mail is being copied out to all Whitney Houston websites, mailing lists and Bulletin Boards. Whitney's profile ensures that thousands of people will have read this by the end of the week. This is also being copied to United Business Media Managing Director, Douglas Shuard and Publisher Steve Redmond. Manish Chavda.

Nippy Inc would like to make it known that the fan's campaign addressing media organisations that have published blatant lies about Whitney's Atlantic City shows are helpful and appreciated and that they do pay attention to the web-fans and their loyalty.
Just to be sure, if you've missed it, the New York Post Review of Whitney's Atlantic City show on Saturday 1 July 2000 can be read just below. To be clear, the review, written by Paula Froelich is packed with lies. THIS REVIEW IS FILLED WITH LIES: FANS of Whitney Houston were a little concerned after her concert at Caesars Palace in Atlantic City Saturday night. Despite rumors of drug use and other personal problems, die-hard fans came out in droves to support the diva. But instead of being treated to hours of her hits, the audience got one surprise after another. "She stopped in the middle of eight or nine songs. She either forgot the words or her voice cracked and then she ended up doing all these weird cover songs - not any of her hits," one spy complained. Houston stopped in the middle of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," apologized to the crowd and said, "I want to make it up to you guys" - and launched into "The Star-Spangled Banner." Later, she got six words into "I Will Always Love You" when her voice cracked. "I'm not singing this song. My voice isn't up to it," she announced before diving into "American Pie." On Tuesday, Whitney sang at a Fourth of July bash at Cablevision honcho Charles Dolan's house in Oyster Bay attended by Gov. Pataki and featuring a high-kicking performance by the Rockettes. But the diva had to cut her set short when the power went dead after four songs. Houston's rep didn't return calls. - Paula Froelich, New York Post.
Please write to the editor of the New York Post demanding that they retract the lies they have posted WITH a published apology from Paula Froelich. She cannot be allowed to get away with this one and she should be held accountable for her reporting. You've been lied to and we have proved the New York Post wrong. Your emails complaining about this count. Copies to me please.

The Classic Whitney Bulletin Board has been targeted by fans of another artist, a former duet partner of Whitney Houston's in fact, in a campaign citing 'Hate Speech' as the reasons for their impending campaign. Their complaint stems from an extensive discussion on the Classic Whitney Bulletin Board following on from Anita Baker's recent statement about the media's treatment of Whitney Houston in the July 2000 issue of 'Sister-2-Sister' magazine. The following statement from a Classic Whitney representative is being posted in the relevant locations addressing this issue: Lawmakers have loosely defined hate speech as an abusive, insulting, intimidating, harassing expression which incites discrimination, harm or violence. They clearly distinguish between opinion and incitement or instigation to commit a crime or use violence. In order for ideas repudiated by society on the whole for their negative character to be classified as hate speech, a connection between the information and any threat of inciting a subsequent violent act must be proven. The respective doctrines of "clear and present danger" & "fighting words" have been developed specifically to deal with face to face confrontations. Hate speech laws are those which likewise prohibit any of the three types of hate speech -- group libel, harassment, and incitement -- and which restrict advocacy of national, racial, or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility, or violence. In the newer field of internet/cyberspace law, a hate site is defined as an organization or individual that advocates violence against or unreasonable hostility in the form of adversity toward the welfare of those persons or organizations identified by their race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender or disability, as well as organizations or individuals that disseminate historically inaccurate information with regards to these persons or organizations for the purpose of vilification. NOTHING posted by the members of the Classic Whitney community meets these criteria. However, the carrying out of organized disruptive attacks against both the free flow of discussion & the operation of Classic Whitney which has been openly discussed on the Friends Of Mariah Carey Bulletin Board is perilously close to the textbook definition of harassment. For the record, the ACLU upholds that politically disagreeable, even hateful, speech cannot be censored, even for "well-intentioned" reasons, because doing so imperils all speech, regardless of content. The ACLU therefore finds no corresponding conflict between the First and the Fourteenth Amendments because there is a strong distinction between regulating action & regulating speech. Murder is illegal. Talking about it is not. The ACLU does NOT support restrictions on the constitutionally protected right to hold and to express views, opinions, or philosophies that others may find repugnant, offensive or emotionally distressing. Harassment, intimidation and invasion of privacy, on the other hand, are illegal. The proper responses to bigotry are education and speech. Perhaps the Friends Of Mariah Carey might learn from civil rights leaders who played a central role in developing the United State's strong free speech tradition. The courts were extremely concerned about protecting the provocative and even offensive forms of expression by civil rights forces. Civil rights groups thus preferred to protect rather than restrict offensive speech -- even if it meant protecting speech that personally offended them. [Statement Prepared By Monte D.]
