[A Statement From The Whitney Houston Platinum Club] Amazingly, the press has pounced on Whitney's absence at
this year's Oscar Awards. The truth of the matter is simply that Whitney Houston was
unable to perform because of a sore throat. We all know that she has been busy working on
new material for her upcoming Greatest Hits package; so, it's not impossible to think that
she's been working her chords overtime as of late. As further affirmation, Jane LaBonte,
the Oscar event publicist, attested, "I was in the rehearsal myself the whole time,
and it was really obvious the poor lady was having a problem with her throat." It was
a mutual decision made by Whitney Houston, Burt Bacharach - the producer of the musical
sequence - and the producers of the show, that Whitney not perform that evening.
Billboard... 'I learned From The Best' is down to No.36 on the Billboard Hot100. The album is down to No.121. Expect to see the complete Billboard Chart Update at the weekend on Classic Whitney.

The week looks like it's going to be one of The Tabloids Vs. Whitney once again as most of the world's tabloid press have decided to pick up variations on the story surrounding Whitney's no show at the Oscars. Just to re-iterate, Whitney's spokesperson, Nancy Seltzer has said Whitney was ill. "Whitney arrived in Los Angeles with a sore throat. After participating in rehearsals both Thursday and Friday nights, she was unsure that she would be better by Sunday. She therefore regretfully withdrew from the performance."
Request... Now would be a really good time to request Whitney's 'I Learned From The Best'. Certain music media and tabloid press seems to compliment each other at times. An opportunity to return the exploitation favour. Call your local radio station and ask that they play this current single. Mail a few other radio stations at the same time.
Billboard... Billboard article about N'Sync's CD sales which contains a small reminder that Whitney Houston is the only female artist to ever sell over one million copies of an album in a single week. 'N Sync Breaks The SoundScan Barrier The music industry's bar has been raised, as 'N Sync's Jive debut "No Strings Attached" exceeds 2.4 million units in its first week of sales, the first time in the SoundScan era that any album has sold more than 2 million copies in a single frame. 'N Sync's opening volley more than doubles the previous SoundScan-era record set last year when labelmates Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" moved 1.13 million copies in its first week. Only two other albums -- the soundtrack from Whitney Houston's "The Bodyguard" and Garth Brooks' "Double Live" -- have earned one-week totals in excess of 1 million units since The Billboard 200 adopted SoundScan data in May 1991. SoundScan data will be officially released today (March 29). In other 'N Sync news, Amplified.com says that its weeklong offer of a free, streamed version of a remix of the group's single "Bye Bye Bye" has resulted in the most deliveries of any song the company has offered to date. More than 1.7 million streams, in Windows Media and RealAudio formats, were delivered via Amplified's distribution network. -- Geoff Mayfield, L.A.; Carolyn Horwitz, N.Y.

[New York Daily News Article About Why Whitney Didn't Perform At The Oscars] Tinseltown Plays 'Where's Whitney?' Hollywood was abuzz yesterday about why Whitney Houston never got to sing at the Oscars. The Grammy-winning songstress was scheduled to perform in the Burt Bacharach musical segment that featured Queen Latifah, Ray Charles and Isaac Hayes. But, at the last minute, she was replaced by Faith Hill. Insiders said Houston had difficulty completing her musical numbers during a rehearsal Friday and bungled some of the lyrics. The rehearsal performance fueled rumors that Houston didn't leave the show of her own accord. But Houston spokeswoman Nancy Seltzer said the singer was ill. "Whitney arrived in Los Angeles with a sore throat," she said. "After participating in rehearsals both Thursday and Friday nights, she was unsure that she would be better by Sunday. She therefore regretfully withdrew from the performance." Jane Labonte, a spokeswoman for the Academy, agreed, and said: "The poor gal was sick. She couldn't sing to the best of her ability. She wasn't fired; it may have been a mutual decision, but she was certainly part of the process." The decision to select Hill apparently didn't sit well with Garth Brooks, who was set to perform after Whitney. Word is, he was upset that other country singers weren't considered. But Brooks' rep, Karen Bird, said the singer's "concern was for Whitney and her feelings, because he had known her for a long time, not over who her replacement would be."

This article is little do to with Whitney but mentions her as being produced by Rodney Jerkins and it's an interesting concept which her regular producers and song writers are actively invested in. HIT U.S. MUSIC STARS ANNOUNCE INSIDER PORTAL A whole host of top songwriters and producers have gathered to publicize Tonos.com, described as a "Music Insiders' Network". Founded by lyricist Carole Bayer Sager, the portal aims to link music business professionals together with aspiring artists and fans. To this end the company has taken ownership of VelvetRope.com, an industry gossip site, and NetMusicSchool.com, which sells piano and guitar lessons online. The two other main partners in the venture are Grammy-winning producer David Foster and R'n'B icon Babyface. In addition to their talents, Tonos.com will be able to draw upon a stable of "Hitmakers" which among others includes Burt Bacharach, songwriter Diane Warren ('Un-break My Heart') and Whitney Houston producer Rodney Jerkins. Users will be able to question these luminaries through Tonos' "Ask-A-Pro" and "Ask The Artist" pages. Possibly the most exciting area of Tonos will be its Challenges zone, which it is claimed will enable unknown acts not only to showcase their music but even to collaborate with some of the Tonos Hitmakers. It is this interactive element which Bayer Sager stresses as important and original: "We're empowering you with tools that you couldn't get anywhere else." Babyface promises to offer his knowledge and experience via Tonos to struggling unsigned musicians: "We want to [take] some of the mystery out of music and show some of the pitfalls we've been through." Matt Farber, formerly the boss of MTV Online and now CEO of Tonos, describes his new home as "the brand that re-invents the music industry for the digital era." While Tonos' intentions are laudable, several Web properties such as ListenSmart.com and Stargig.com are planning to offer similar services. It is hard to predict whether or not undiscovered acts will ever really be able to gain close-quarters access to the stars; Tonos' closest predecessor, VelvetRope.com, could perhaps be better described as an industry outsider site. Whitney Houston's publicist today confirmed that much of the publicity/TV marketing information that originated in the BMG book was inaccurate information. Basically, the record company publishes details of the campaign way in advance to music retailers to let them know what is coming up. This is standard practise for all labels. In Whitney's case, the details of the Greatest Hits contained the tracklisting for the album as well as details on how Arista would be marketing the project. The tracklisting is correct. The print media information is incorrect. This was a wish list at the time of going to print. Whitney is not scheduled to have cover stories for Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Parade or In Style and the same applies to most of the other print media listed. Read: Unconfirmed. As for stories about Whitney performing her TV special on the grounds of her home, it's been confirmed that this was being considered and although not ruled out, it seems unlikely. As for the confusion surrounding the next European single, BMG International have said that a final decision about the next single has not been made. The title of the album and it's final artwork is being decided by Whitney at the moment. Hopefully we will hear something more about this soon.
TV Guide Comment About Oscars: The ceremony itself kicks off with a new fanfare overture, composed and conducted by Bart Bacharach, that will bracket a medley of classic movie tunes sung by such stars as Garth Brooks, Ray Charles, Issac Hayes, Queen Latifah and Whitney Houston. Bacharach, who shares music-director duties with famed record producer Don Was, says, " in trimming the fat off the show, Dick and Lili want the music to really move things," Adds Was: "There will be a lot of rhyhm, and every star entrance will have a groove under it. This will be the first show in Oscar history to feature a DJ and tuntable in the orchestra". Seems like Whitney's performance will be at the top of the show. [Thanks Arthur]
'I Learned From The Best' loses it's bullet and drops to No.28 this week on the Billboard Hot 100. On the R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks Chart, the song is down to No.15. The imminent birth of Bobbi Kristina prevented Whitney Houston from performing at the 1993 Oscars to sing the two nominated songs from 'The Bodyguard'. In her place, Natalie Cole sang the medley of 'Run To You' and 'I Have Nothing' (complete with losing her way just a bit on 'I Have Nothing'. She recovered well).
LOS ANGELES (UltimateTV.com) - NBC's "Today Show" is humming a new tune: the peacock is planning to launch a series of albums based on the program's popular summer music spots, reports the New York Daily News. "NBC would like to leverage the tremendous success of the 'Today Show' concert series," an NBC spokeswoman said. "We hope to have a deal with a record company in the near future." So far the "Today Show" has nabbed some big name artists to perform on its Rockefeller Center stage, including Grammy-King Carlos Santana, Whitney Houston, James Taylor, Jewel and Ricky Martin. Not sure if this means that a Whitney performance is going to be on this album or not - Manish. [Thanks Tony L]

Diva... [VH1 Report About 'Diva' - States Movie May Shift From Opera To R&B] I WILL ALWAYS LOVE...ACTING VH1.com has spent many a night nestled in bed enjoying a peaceful slumber, only to bolt upright at 4 AM, wondering when Whitney Houston would once again grace the silver screen with a performance as consistently incandescent as her star turns in The Bodyguard, Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife. Soon enough, VH1.com will enjoy an uninterrupted rest, since it has been announced that Mrs. Bobby Brown is set to take the title role in Diva. Variety reports that Will Smith's Overbrook Entertainment has joined with Houston's Brownstone Productions in the production for a remake of Jean-Jacques Beineix's 1981 French thriller. Diana Ross was initially the favorite for the role, but her option expired a year and a half ago. The Diva in question was originally an opera singer. Therein, a mail courier intends to surreptitiously tape a performance by his favorite singer, only to discover that he has recorded the confessions of a murdered prostitute instead. A shift in musical emphasis from opera to lush R&B is to be expected, although any singing from Houston is likely to entail much operatic bravura. Whether this role will involve effusing over a child, which Houston invariably does over her daughter Bobbi Kristina at awards shows, is as yet undetermined. It's unlikely that Smith will appear in this Diva, although he has quite a penchant for remakes of classic cinema: He's reported to be starring in Jonathan Demme's update of the 1963 romantic thriller, Charade, which originally starred Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. At the moment, Smith is shooting the wholly original period golf pic The Legend of Bagger Vance. NEWSFILE: 9 MARCH 2000 |

Whitney Houston had to cancel her Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame appearance last night. This was due to her very heavy recording and performance schedule over the past two weeks, rainy cool L.A. weather, as well as the airplane (very dry air in cabin) travel from West Coast to East Coast. I'm reliably informed that she literally had no voice last night. Whitney wanted to do the show for Clive Davis (she was scheduled to present his award to him) but it just wasn't possible. Clive understood completely.

But TLC's success provoked an outburst from Dru Hill's Sisqo. Dru Hill's song 'Beauty' lost out to TLC's 'No Scrubs' as Best R&B Single and Sisqo said furiously: "I'm tired of losing, 'cause I'm the best and y'all know it." Sisqo, who performed at the ceremony without the rest of the band, protested backstage: "They keep putting us against TLC and you can't win against them." The Artist, who was also honoured for his take up of digital music, spoke out for the rights of black artists. He said: "When it's not your game everything comes hard. As long as you're signed to a contract, you're gonna take home a minority share of the winnings. A select few of us will do well; the majority will not, so as a people, we will be considered a minority." Whitney Houston was more traditional in her approach, thanking her label, producers and husband Bobby Brown, and singing 'Happy Birthday' to her daughter Bobbi Kristina. R. Kelly won R&B/Soul or Rap Album of the Year for 'R' , TLC won Best R&B/Soul Album and Single for 'Fanmail' and 'No Scrubs' respectively. [Dotmusic Article - Nothing New Here But Great To See Some Positive Reporting] WHITNEY AND GEORGE MICHAEL SING A LONG Whitney Houston is planning a greatest hits album, featuring new and reworked tracks, which is expected to include a duet with superstar George Michael. Rodney Jerkins, who will be producing the duet, told MTV News that the song will be 'If I Told You That,' which she has already recorded as a solo artist and which was included on her 1998 album ' My Love Is Your Love'. Jerkins told MTV: "It's supposed to be a duet between her and Michael Jackson. We couldn't get the Michael Jackson thing to happen, so George Michael was the next pick. I think he's gonna nail it. I can't wait to do the vocals, and everything's gonna be incredible." Other duets to grace the album will be a pairing with Enrique Iglesias on 'Could I Have This Kiss Forever' from Iglesias' 'Enrique' album, a song with Canadian R&B artist Deborah Cox and a new track written for Houston by Q-Tip and Raphael Saadiq. The greatest hits collection, her first ever, is due out in May. It's her first

[MTV News Report] Professional diva Whitney Houston has a greatest-hits album in the works, and the project promises to include a handful of new and reworked tracks, including a pairing with a diva of another sort... George Michael. The song featuring the duo will be "If I Told You That," which already appears in solo form on Houston's 1998 LP "My Love Is Your Love." Handling the production duties on the duet will be Rodney Jerkins, who gave the details to MTV News' John Norris backstage at last week's Grammy Awards. "It's supposed to be a duet between her and Michael Jackson," Jerkins began. "We couldn't get the Michael Jackson thing to happen, so George Michael was the next pick. I think he's gonna nail it. I can't wait to do the vocals, and everything's gonna be incredible." [RealVideo] Other duets planned for the Houston package are one with Deborah Cox as well as "Could I Have This Kiss Forever" with Enrique Iglesias, a song which can be found on his "Enrique" album. The collection is due out in May (see "Whitney Recruits Enrique, Q-Tip For Greatest Hits"). -- Andréa Duncan
