[This Is London - Friday March 23, 05:07 PM]Bond eyes up Whitney HoustonBy Richard Simpson The makers of 007 confirmed for the first time today that Whitney Houston is being lined up to play the next Bond girl. The soul diva - who starred with Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard from which she had a number one hit I Will Always Love You - and film group MGM have both said that she is being considered for the part. Houston, 37, is set to be the love interest of James Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, 47, when shooting begins later this year. The only confirmed castings so far are John Cleese who is to play "R" and Dame Judi Dench who will again play "M". If Houston lands the role in the film - provisionally titled Bond 20 - she will join the ranks of the Bond girls such as Ursula Andress, Diana Rigg and Honor Blackman.
Arista is planning on re-releasing some of their old maxi-singles. The first to be released is Whitney Houston's maxi-single for 'It's Not Right But It's Okay; as well as a few from other artist such as TLC, Usher & The Real McCoy. Although unlikely at this early stage, Whitney may get a mention during Pierce Brosnan's appearance on the Jay Leno show tonight in the US. Check local listings for times. [Thanks RIzzo]
Tabloid favorite Whitney Houston is set to become the successor to sexy chicks Honey Rider, Mary Goodnight, Lupe Lamora, and yes, Pussy Galore, reportedly inking a deal to become the next Bond girl. The pop singer has agreed to star opposite Pierce Brosnan in the next installment of the James Bond series, according to a report in Britain's Sun tabloid. However, final approval of Houston rests with Dana Broccoli, widow of famous Bond film producer Albert Broccoli, who has the last word on everything to do with the 007 franchise, the Sun notes. Houston also starred in the 1992 blockbuster The Bodyguard, as well as 1995's Waiting to Exhale. "The movie bosses think Whitney would make a fantastic Bond girl and are desperately working out a deal which will be acceptable," the Sun quoted an unidentified source as saying. There is no word on whether Houston would be cast as a "good" Bond girl, along the lines of Daniela Bianchi (Tatyana Romanova in From Russia With Love) and Mie Hama (Kissy Suzuki in You Only Live Twice), or a "bad" Bond girl, as played by Grace Jones (May Day in 1985's A View to a Kill) and Famke Janssen (Xenia Onatopp in 1995's GoldenEye). The paper reported that the still-untitled movie would begin shooting later this year, after the looming writers' and actors' strikes end. [Thanks Gosia] NEWSFILE: 23 MARCH 2001 |
Guardian Unlimited Wednesday March 21, 2001 Singer Whitney Houston could be in line to play Pierce Brosnan's love interest in the new James Bond production due to start filming later this year. The Grammy winner is rumoured to be keen on taking the role, though the final decision is down to Dana Broccoli, widow of longtime Bond producer Albert Broccoli. Today's Sun newspaper quotes an unnamed studio source as saying that: "The movie bosses think Whitney would make a fantastic Bond girl and are desperately working out a deal which will be acceptable." Houston, 37, scored a major box-office hit nine years ago with her role opposite Kevin Costner in The Bodyguard, and later starred in Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife. But in recent years the diva has been dogged by bad publicity, including reports of a drug bust, rumours of marital strife and backstage gossip that suggested she was thrown off the set during last year's Oscar night rehearsals. Another possible concern for the Bond backers is that 007 does not have an illustrious track record when it comes to mixed race liaisons. Back in 1973, Roger Moore received death threats after Bond hopped into bed with a black temptress played by Gloria Hendry in Live and Let Die. Brosnan will no doubt be hoping that times have changed since then.
USA Today: Whitney's Publicist Confirms "Meetings"... Houston, Whitney Houston to be Bond girl?By Maria Montoya and Josh Chetwynd, USA TODAY Diva Whitney Houston a Bond girl? Could be. Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson are kicking around the idea. The movie would be filmed later this year with Bond boy Pierce Brosnan, but as of now, there is no set title or any signed contracts. MGM spokeswoman Amanda Lundberg confirmed Wednesday that Bond producers "are planning to meet" with the singer, but says the meeting is expected to be general in nature and not necessarily for the next Bond film. Nancy Seltzer, Houston's publicist, would only confirm that meetings are in the works. Houston, who appeared with Kevin Costner in the box office hit The Bodyguard, would follow in Denise Richards' and Grace Jones' footsteps if chosen to be the next Bond arm candy. [Thanks Tyron]
BOND BABE? Whitney Houston may be the next Bond girl, Reuters reports from Britain's Sun tabloid. Houston has reportedly agreed to star opposite Pierce Brosnan in the latest 007 installment, ''Bond 20,'' for MGM. The pop diva is supposedly waiting for confirmation from Dana Broccoli, widow of legendary Bond producer Albert Broccoli. ''The movie bosses think Whitney would make a fantastic Bond girl and are desperately working out a deal which is acceptable,'' an ''anonymous source'' told the Sun. So far, neither MGM, the Broccoli estate, nor Houston's reps have commented on the tabloid's story. Maybe Whitney and her people are negotiating to change the role to Bond WOMAN.

By VICTORIA NEWTON POP diva Whitney Houston is being lined up to star as a Bond girl alongside Pierce Brosnan in the next 007 film. Whitney, 37, has already agreed to the project in principle, and is now waiting to enter final negotiations with movie bosses. Multi-millionaire beauty Whitney - whose No1 hits include I Will Always Love You - is due to meet the widow of famous Bond producer Albert "Cubby" Broccoli this week. Dana Broccoli is chairman of her late husband's company, Danjak, and has the last word on everything to do with the James Bond movie franchise. It was her who decided heart-throb Sean Connery was sexy enough to play Bond. Dana was also instrumental in signing up actor Timothy Dalton to appear as the British secret agent. Now she is said to be "extremely keen" to get Whitney involved in the new Bond movie, being filmed later this year. A source said: "The movie bosses think Whitney would make a fantastic Bond girl and are desperately working out a deal which will be acceptable. She has all the glamour, talent and star power to make a huge impact. Whitney would also be a perfect choice to sing the big song from the soundtrack because of her amazing voice. Preliminary talks have taken place and both sides expect a deal to be struck soon." If talks are successful, Whitney will join a long line of famous Bond girls including Ursula Andress, Honor Blackman, Joanna Lumley, Denise Richards, Sophie Marceau, Barbara Bach and Grace Jones. The Bond movie will not be the first time Whitney has appeared on the big screen. She made her major film breakthrough in The Bodyguard, starring alongside Hollywood heart-throb Kevin Costner and singing on the hugely successful soundtrack - which included the smash I Will Always Love You. The film was a massive box office hit, and there is now talk of a Bodyguard 2 movie. Whitney, who is married to singer Bobby Brown, is currently in Los Angeles filming a pop video with The Backstreet Boys.

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's late Princess Diana was ''genuinely excited'' about a role in the sequel to the 1992 hit movie ``The Bodyguard'' Hollywood actor Kevin Costner said in a television interview. ``I had talked with Princess Di a couple of times. I explained to her that I was going to try to make this movie for her and she was genuinely interested,'' Costner told British chat show host Michael Parkinson in an interview to be broadcast on Saturday. Costner, in London to promote his latest film ``Thirteen Days,'' said the princess had not committed to doing the movie but was ``genuinely excited'' by the prospect. He received the final draft of the script on the day Diana was killed in a Paris car crash in August 1997. ``I was devastated by it. She was a very graceful woman and it is a great loss to all of us,'' Costner told Parkinson. ``The Bodyguard'' was an instant box office hit in 1992. The film tells the story of the relationship between a famous singer, played by real-life pop diva Whitney Houston, and bodyguard Costner. Costner told Parkinson the sequel would have broken new ground if Diana had consented to appear. NEWSFILE: 17 MARCH 2001 |

Wednesday March 07 09:55 PM EST Reuters Whitney's Record Wiped Clean Whitney Houston can now feel free to travel to Hawaii for vacation, not court hearings. The pop diva has met all of her court-ordered requirements after pleading no contest last November to marijuana possession charges, and prosecutors said Wednesday her much-publicized case is dismissed. Houston, 37, copped a plea in Kona District Court following her run-in last January with Hawaiian airport security, who allegedly found half an ounce of pot in her carry-on bag. To remove the petty misdemeanor from her record, Houston was ordered to pay several fines, donate money to an antidrug group and submit to a substance-abuse assessment. The deal hit a snag last month, when the court's deadline passed and Houston failed to submit proof of her substance-abuse evaluation. But Deputy Prosecutor Mel Fujino says Houston received the assessment last month, and prosecutors decided to clear her record. "The probation office received the assessment and recommended the case be dismissed," Fujino says. "We are satisfied Ms. Houston is in compliance. She did everything the court asked her to do." Houston's lawyer, Bryan Blaney, says he takes the blame for the early mix-up. He said Houston initially took a drug test, thinking that was all the court asked for. But the court actually required a "substance-abuse assessment," which involves sitting down for a full evaluation with a substance-abuse counselor. Blaney says Houston eventually sat down with Michael V. Burke, a substance-abuse counselor from Rutgers University. "I'm very happy, as is my client," Blaney says of the dismissal. "This is something that should have not extended this far. There was a misunderstanding about what was requested... She never failed to do a drug assessment, it's just that because of the time frame, it took us a little longer to get it in place." Houston was stopped January 11, 2000, at Keahole-Kona International Airport after security guards searched her bag and allegedly found marijuana in two plastic baggies and three partially smoked joints. But instead of hanging around, Houston and hubby Bobby Brown hopped on their flight to San Francisco before police arrived. The Hawaii incident sparked what would become a tabloid-fueled frenzy over Houston's state of health last year. The pot bust--followed by a series of strange incidents and a no-show at the Oscars--led some to speculate that Houston was battling a drug problem. [Thanks Lopez]
Whitney Houston Drug Case Dropped A judge has dismissed a marijuana possession charge against singer Whitney Houston, leaving her with a clean record in Hawaii, prosecutors said. District Judge Joseph Florendo Jr. dismissed the petty misdemeanor marijuana possession charge earlier this week after a substance abuse assessment was filed on her behalf, said Deputy Prosecutor Melvin Fujino. The assessment, submitted on Feb. 22 by Michael Burke, a certified substance abuse counselor in Highland Park, N.J., stated Houston doesn't require treatment for substance abuse. As previously reported, Houston's bag was seized at the Keahole-Kona Airport on Jan. 11, 2000. Fujino and Houston's attorneys stipulated in court last November that the bag contained less than half an ounce of marijuana in two plastic baggies and three partially smoked marijuana cigarettes. The 37-year-old singer, who was not arrested, allegedly abandoned the bag and boarded a United Airlines flight for San Francisco with her husband, singer Bobby Brown, before police arrived. In a German interview, Natalie Cole states that she feels Whitney Houston doesn't have what it takes to make a Jazz album and that the results would not be what people would want to hear. She also cites Barbra Streisand and Donna Summer as artists that could not make a strong enough Jazz album. This is just the latest in a string of book promotion related comments from Natalie Cole that do not paint Whitney in a positive frame. If you can read German, the complete interview is located here. Back From Holiday... [From New York Daily News] A Restrained 'Relation'-ship Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown, who have been chilling out on the Indian Ocean isle of Mauritius, are due back here at the end of the week for a roller-rink birthday party for their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, who is turning 8. The family should be relieved to hear that a New Jersey judge has reinstated an order shielding Houston from an obsessed fan who believes Whitney is her "supernatural reincarnated mother." New Jersey Superior Court Judge Kenneth MacKenzie yesterday issued a temporary order against Desiree Weeks, 33, who has been admitted to a New York psychiatric hospital. Houston is seeking a permanent restraining order against Weeks who, according to court records, has bombarded the star with letters, greeting cards and gifts, including Valentine's Day chocolates and a four-tiered cake. In December 1999, Weeks mailed Houston, whom she calls "Mommy," a bra and panties, pajamas for hubby Bobby, and pillows for "sister" Bobbi. Houston's lawyer said Weeks hasn't harmed the star or her family, but the order bars Weeks from trying to make any kind of contact with them. Houston let a previous restraining order lapse in June, believing Weeks was locked up. The singer filed to renew the order because Weeks escaped from the hospital Jan. 26 for 11 hours.
