Bobby Brown's Narcotic Nightmare
UPDATED: 2:24 PM PDT April 29, 2004
Just a few weeks ago Whitney Houston reportedly entered a drug
rehabilitation center, now husband Bobby Brown is admitting to his own drug
abuse problems on Friday's edition of "Dateline NBC."
"I got tired of getting high, you know. I mean I would spend days to weeks
just high," revealed Brown.
Bobby's drug confession to Stone Phillips comes after years of allegations
of substance abuse.
When asked what substances he was on, Brown told Phillips: "On coke,
marijuana at the same time... Alcohol, I wasn't the type that was going to
discriminate."
Stone Phillips talked to Access about the interview.
"The fact that he's bipolar doesn't help because he was taking alcohol for
the highs, cocaine for the lows. And now he says that he's on medication
that's broken that cycle and is doing better, but he realizes that sobriety
is a day by day thing for him," said Phillips.
With his mother Carole by his side, Bobby responded to tabloid allegations
that claim he told wife Whitney not to go to rehab.
"Although Bobby understands substance abuse issues, a source close to
Houston says he's always been adamant that Whitney not seek professional
help for her own drug demons. Is that true?" Phillips asked Brown.
"I've encouraged us to be clean and healthy and she [motioning to his
mother] encouraged us. My wife... we're both on the same wavelength as far
as us getting help. But I just let other people know you ain't got to put
our business in the street," said Brown.
"Everytime something bad happens to either one of them. The finger gets
pointed at Bobby Brown and he addresses that in this interview because he's
tired of that blame game," Phillips told Access.
Bobby also revealed that Whitney's own family has been less than cordial
toward him.
"Do you feel like her family hasn't accepted you?" asked Phillips.
"I don't feel like they have accepted me totally, no. Just her mom, I feel
like her mom doesn't really know me," replied Brown.
In 1998, when Access interviewed Whitney's mother, Cissy, she spoke of the
odd coupling of Whitney and Bobby.
"Well opposites attract," laughed Cissy. "As long as he doesn't hurt her.
She has to learn to deal with her own."
And dealing for Bobby today means getting his own career back -- even if
that means spending time away from Whitney.
"I'm not saying a separation. I'm saying it's time for daddy to be at work
and it's time for mommy to be at home," said Brown.
