Bobby Brown Busted...Again

Yet another chapter in the epic-length True Hollywood Story life of Bobby Brown.
The bad-boy hubby of Whitney Houston was arrested Thursday in the ritzy Atlanta
neighborhood of Buckhead on drug charges and traffic violations. An officer at the scene
said the onetime chart topper was charged with possession of less than an ounce of
marijuana, speeding and having no driver's license or proof of insurance.
The police report says the trouble started when Brown was initially pulled over for
speeding in his Cadillac Escalade in the wee hours of the morning. Things went
progressively worse from there.
"I don't have an ID, but I'm Bobby Brown," the erstwhile New Jack Swing-er told
the officer, per the report, a copy of which was obtained by The Smoking Gun Website.
The officer ran Brown's name and discovered a five-year-old warrant for the singer's
arrest in the neighboring DeKalb County, so the officer decided to take Brown in. During
the drive to the police station, Brown reportedly copped to having a bag a marijuana in
his pocket. And the rest is headline-making history.
Brown, 33, posted bond soon after his arrest, but he will now have to face the outstanding
warrant; he was expected to be taken to the DeKalb County Jail by Wednesday afternoon.
According to CNN, Brown was busted in DeKalb in 1996 in what has become a disturbing
pattern for him: DUI, speeding, erratic driving, no insurance. Brown tried to enter his
plea without going the Georgia court, but Judge Wayne Purdom refused the request and wound
up issuing the warrant when Brown went MIA.
Sounds similar to what went down in 2000, when Brown wound up serving 26 days in a Florida
jail for violating the terms of his probation from a 1996 drunken-driving arrest in that
state and refusing to take a drug test. During sentencing, he tearfully told the judge,
"I have a disease. I am an addict. I am an alcoholic. Hopefully I can get back to
what I do best--dancing and singing."
(That same year, Houston was nabbed in a Hawaii airport for having marijuana in her purse.
A misdemeanor drug charge was eventually dismissed.)
Brown's health has also been an issue of late. He collapsed and suffered a seizure while
in his New Jersey studio in August 2001, and this summer he spent three days in a Virgina
hospital for an undisclosed infection.
Thursday's arrest underscores the sad fact that Brown has indeed not gotten back to his
"dancing and singing roots," in spite of his courtroom promises. Though he
scored solo success in the late '80s with hits like "My Prerogative" and
"Don't Be Cruel," he hasn't released an album since 1997.
He is also not joining his New Edition mates for their upcoming reunion album and tour.
As for Whitney, her return to the airways has been a bit of a bust. Her recent
single "Whatchulookinat?" didn't even crack the Top 40, and she is still
struggling to wrap her long-delayed, still-untitled new album, which was expected to hit
stores sometime in the fourth quarter.
