Singer doing more time
DECATUR, Ga.
- Washed up R&B singer Bobby Brown was ordered yesterday to spend nine more
days in a Georgia prison cell for violating his probation from a drunken
driving conviction.
Brown's pop diva wife, Whitney Houston, arrived in court halfway into his
lawyer's failed attempt to get the 33-year-old singer sprung.
Houston, who sat two rows behind Brown, received - and answered - a cell
phone call during defense lawyer Maurice Bennett's presentation.
Cops arrested Brown on Friday as he and Houston dined at a seafood
restaurant in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta.
The reason? Brown failed to check in with his probation office. He pleaded
guilty in January to a 1996 drunken driving charge in DeKalb County.
Bennett said Brown was suffering from an elbow injury in July that kept him
bedridden.
But Judge Wayne Purdom showed no sympathy, hitting Brown with the extra jail
time and 60 days of house arrest.
"If you come back to court, you'll be sentenced to 120 days and you'll
probably serve 90," the judge warned.
Brown also was ordered to undergo another drug assessment.
In November, he was arrested in Atlanta on charges of possessing less than
an ounce of marijuana, speeding and having no driver's license or insurance.
During the hearing, the singer told Purdom, "I apologize for being back in
your court and taking your time. I have no reason, I am a human being."
After the hearing, his 40-year-old Grammy-winning wife told reporters that
she told Brown to "stay strong, baby."
