BOBBY BROWN
BEHIND BARS
Singer Bobby Brown will spend a further nine days in jail after violating
his probation for a drink driving conviction.
The husband of pop diva Whitney Houston was given a 14-day sentence for the
violation, with credit for the five days served since his arrest last
Friday.
Brown was originally jailed in January after pleading guilty to a 1996 drink
driving charge. He was ordered to perform community service and pay a fine,
but probation officers told the court he failed to follow the terms.
Lawyers for the rap star said he attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and
performed community service but hadn't told his probation officer.
Appearing in a Georgia county court wearing an orange jail uniform, the man
behind hits such as Every Little Step and My Prerogative apologised to the
judge.
Judge Wayne Purdom said Brown would be be under house arrest for 60 days
after any substance abuse treatment and would complete community service in
Georgia.
He also ordered Brown not to drive and warned of harsher consequences if he
failed again.
"If you come back to court, you'll be sentenced to 120 days and you'll
probably serve 90," Purdom said.
The singer was held in a Florida jail for 26 days in 2000 for violating
probation after an incident at a nightclub in Florida. That same year he
pleaded no contest to charges of kicking a hotel security guard in West
Hollywood.
