Epic...

[From Fab Magazine]

The following is an excerpt of an interview with Thunderpuss' Chris Cox that is featured in Toronto's Fab Magazine:

Fab: Let's talk about the process behind the epic.

CC: What epic?

Whitney Houston's "It's Not Right But It's Okay." Give me the full behind the scenes.

A mutual friend introduced Barry (Harris, the other half of Thunderpuss from Toronto) to me when he was still playing at the Barn. We decided to do some projects together when he visited me in L.A. After that, Mark Nathan from Universal Music gave us Billie Myers' "Kiss The Rain" to remix - which up in New York. One of our A&R friends heard the Billie Myers mix and he was preparing the Whitney Houston project. He contacted us and asked us to remix two Whitney songs. We freaked.

What was the runner-up song?

"If I Told You That." We asked for "It's Not Right" instead.

What was your first impression? Did Whitney's vocals need any clean up?

They sounded great and needed no tuning! Some artists need studio magic - she was singing her ass off. The only doctoring we did was the long-held diva note - the ad lib - "you were making a fool of meeeeeeeeee."

How did you decide what got the huge climax?

When we both got goose bumps at the same time. It was the highest note she hit - that ad lib. On the single release, it wasn't played up. The original has got attitude but it is politely produced. In the ad lib, she wailed away. When we heard the full track, isolated - we were like "Ohhhhh girl, you go to church on this song!" We added funk too and of course just put our heart and soul into it.

So what about the first drafts you sent to the record company?

They flipped and thought we went too far. The original build up was three times longer than what was released! It got complex and wild. A year after the fact, we listened to it and agreed it was too much.

Did Whitney have the last word on it?

Clive Davis had the last word. She trusted him enough. She did hear it because we met her and she loved it. We met her at the VH1 after party for Divas Live - we were in her receiving line. We were not the stars of the room. It was like meeting the Queen. We snapped a picture and that was it.

And what of the rumours that you've made the most money anyone has ever made off of a remix? Are they true?

It is a common misconception. We are not millionaires. Even artists aren't millionaires. By the time everyone takes his or her share of the pot, no one is bathing in money.

[Thanks Amit K.]

Ebony...

L.A. Reid is featured in this months annual Ebony Men's issue under the title "The Most Powerful Black In The Music Business."

The following excerpt from the article discusses Whitney Houston:

In addition to industry challenges Reid has had to deal with issues surrounding some of his star artists, including Whitney Houston and Toni Braxton.  "We just finished the most incredible video on Whitney," he says incredible excitedly. "It is the first time in many many years that Whitney has done something that I feel measures up to her past successes and that touches her past successes and that touches that same nerve in me.

"I'm feeling really, really good about her and I love our relationship," he says of the talented diva who has sold more than 120 million records. In recent years Houston has been engulfed in controversy surrounding her personal life and public appearances. "We were friends for many years before I came to the company and when I started working here, Whitney was the first artist to stand up and say: 'I absolutely support you coming to this company".

"We both have had our good and bad days in our careers ,and I stand by her. Every day I see her improve and get better, smarter and stronger. So I'm happy and feel good about her. She is in a really great space right now and I'm very, very happy with what she's doing professionally. When I speak with her it's always a joy .It really is."

Houston's latest CD, Just Whitney..., has sold 2 million copies, far below the norm for her records. "But I'm convinced that over the long haul it will be a successful record and we intend to stick by it." Reid says. "One thing all great artist have in common is that they may not always sell the records that new, trendy artists sell, but their careers last much longer. That's how Whitney is she has already weathered the storm .She's already proved that she can stand the test of time, and no one can question her talent."
