The Associated Press confirms Whitney Houston's upcoming summer shows with Natalie Cole and Dionne Warwick based on Natalie Cole's interview with Access Hollywood (17 May 2004).
Clive Davis was the guest judge on last night's American Idol show in which two Whitney Houston songs were performed. Hawaiian contestant Jasime Trias performed 'Saving All My Love For You'. Of the performance, Randy Jackson said: "When you pick a stylized singer like Whitney Houston, who is unbelievable, it’s always going to kind of pale in comparison...It was good, it was not great. ... It’s like, you’re good, but you’re not all the way there yet.” Paula Abdul has this to say: "If you’re going to pick that, you’re going to have to sing at least as good as Whitney, if not better,” she said. “So it’s a tough song to pick, especially at this point in the competition. You’re almost there, but not quite.” In response to Paula Abdul's comments, Clive Davis corrected her with "Well, no one can sing better than Whitney Houston." NEWSFILE: 19 MAY 2004 |

The producer of the Gladys Knight & The Pips' classic 'Midnight Train To Georgia', Tony Camillo, is interviewed today in the Newark Star-Ledger (Read The Star-Ledger Interview Here). Camillo mentions how he worked with Cissy Houston and The Sweet Inspirations on the Bazuka hit, 'Dynomite - Part 1'. Camillo also discusses his involvement as producer of 'Midnight Train To Georgia' for Gladys Knight & The Pips saying: "What (songwriter Jim Weatherly) had written was called 'Midnight Plane to Houston.' I revamped it, because Gladys was from Georgia and I thought that was a perfect setup for her. I wanted to hear something unique -- pop and yet something that demonstrated that quality in her voice that she had at Motown. I wanted to maintain that urgency in her voice, but go pop with it." Cissy Houston mentions in her autobiography, 'How Sweet The Sound - My Life With God & Gospel', that when she originally received and began to record the song, it was titled 'Midnight Plane to Houston'. Thinking that no-one would really do such a thing, she recorded the song with producer Sonny Limbo as 'Midnight Train To Georgia' after approval from songwriter Jim Weatherly. In Fred Bronson's book, 'The Billboard Book of Number One Hits' (Billboard, 1988), Jim Weatherly recalls events as follows: "It was based on a conversation I had with somebody... about taking a midnight plane to Houston...I wrote it as a kind of a country song. Then we sent the song to a guy named Sonny Limbo in Atlanta and he wanted to cut it on Cissy Houston... he asked if I minded if he changed the title to 'Midnight Train to Georgia.' And I said, I don't mind. Just don't change the rest of the song.'" Weatherly's publisher forwarded the song to Gladys Knight & The Pips, who followed Cissy Houston's lead and kept the title 'Midnight Train to Georgia', according to the Bronson's book, invalidating claims by Tony Camillo that he changed the song's title. To listen to a short excerpt of Cissy Houston's 'Midnight Train To Georgia', Click Here (BBC Radio 2). You can also link to the BBC Radio 2 Website and vote Cissy Houston's version as the better one.
